all those things are important.

but aren't we talking about the MOST IMPORTANT quality or trait in drumming? in other words, in your opinion, even if all those things (groove, timing, dynamics, techniques, soloing, etc.) are important, which one do you think is MOST IMPORTANT?

with good taste, everything else follows -- feel and the necessary technique to carry out whatever it is you hear in your head.

john jr robinson isn't exactly popular for his solos, speed or double bass chops, but his impeccable timing and groove made him one of the most recorded drummers in history. there's a reason why he's first on quincy jones' list.

i think most of you are familiar with michael jackson's 'rock with you'. that one bar fill that begins the song has become a part of the song that it's practically a mortal sin to change it. another thing to notice is, there are no drum fills in that song that takes away the attention from the singer, and if you tried to count how many times the crash cymbal was used, i'm betting you wouldn't even reach 5.

it seems that a lot of pinoy drummers spend too much time practicing drum solos, rather than groove. not a bad thing though. not good either. to prove this point, try to notice how our drummers seem to be better at soloing than maintaining a good groove. also, try to notice how, in drum clinics, more questions are being asked about how to make a kick-ass solo rather than how to get a great groove going. browse around this forum alone, and you'll find questions like, 'papano ba gumawa ng solo na maangas?' and it's been a very long time since the last time somebody asked how to come up with an effective rhythm or feel.

kids will play drums as kids...mature more musical men/women will play drums as what is
truly needed within a band or a song.

kanya kanyang teritoryo lang yan.

totoo rin yan. kanya-kanya ngang teritoryo.

however, it's going to be quite an irony to find yourself in a band, where it is almost always assumed that you should play as a group, unless you all agree that it is a venue for self glorification. nothing wrong with that. it's just not my preference as a musician.

take it on a larger scale, well, imagine a whole orchestra with each player soloing -- all at the same time.

not my kind of music. haha. :-D

yeah! I AGREE! :-D that's also one of the reasons why i play in our church... we do it for God, not for ourselves! kung puro sayo lang yung focus mo, parang you're showing off already. hehe. who likes people who flaunt their stuff, right?

well, there's a right place to show your stuff without much risk of offending anybody -- like jams, etc.

restraint is part of skill. that's why in music, there aren't only notes. there are rests as well. and the rests bring life to the notes. there aren't only fast lines, there are slow lines that give meaning to the fast ones.

music is sound rendered intelligently. silence is part of it. in fact, when silence is rendered intelligently, it becomes MUSIC too.

just like what the great chick corea said -- play only what you hear (in your head, that is). if you don't hear anything, don't play anything.

...I dont see anything wrong if a drummer is eager to play or learn to play solo.

...Take CHARLIE PARKER as an example.Kung nag saxophone kaya sya na kagaya ng style ni Benny Carter,o Sydney Bechet sa palagay nyo anong klaseng tunog ng Jazz ngayon!?!

Anyway, very subjective tong topic na 'to e. Im just assuming na "drumming for the sake of drumming as an art form" ang point natin dito. Hindi "drumming for the sake of lets-make-a-pop-hit-and-make-money"
?form.

Music as a form of self-expression is suppose to be free from restraint.

 Defy standards!

 Seize the Day!

"follow the sound of a different drummer" - I forgot who quote this.

 Peace!

What's the Most Important Quality in Drumming?

...is good drumming itself.

no matter how groovy or technical you play if it ain't good enough
for them you won't get the gig you're striving for.

yup. i agree. and you have to master the song. learn it well. so when it comes to your gigs and things like that, if you wanna add up some more spice into it, you can easily do it. :-D

the thing with the term 'good drumming', well, is that it's too loose a term, and everybody has their own concept of 'good drumming'. :-)

my sentiments exactly.
it could refer to a myriad of drumming topics.
good time, good playing, variety of genre knowledge, etc.. marami.

but for me, the most important quality in drumming is keeping steady time.

i would have to agree.

IMHO, these are most important. these are the things i look for as a producer/music director...

1. time
2. dynamics
3. sensitivity as a musician -- this is related to #1 and #2. i've encountered several drummers who don't listen to what their bandmates are doing. not cool. :-(
4. tone/tuning -- related to #3. i've encountered several drummers who fall in love with a particular sound, and then use it everywhere. again, not cool. :-(
5. groove -- related to #1-#4.

of course, these opinions are coming from someone who's not a drummer. :-)

The drummer must express himself as a human being.
So to know the beauty of playing was meaning to know the beauty as a human being..
