It depends on the difficulty on the song. If song requires really damn good chops (tool songs), I make sure that I emulate Danny Carey. The song is better off his style of playing. And if you successfully emulate the drummer, maiisip mo na gumaling ka ng konti kahit papano.

Pero if the song is better off your style, just be yourself.

For us drummers, when covering a song, do you...make it different or you just copy it note by note?

For me, I do the prior than the latter. It's because I want to see how I can interpret the song with my own thoughts, madalas kasi ndi ko kayang gayahin yung pattern...hahaha. Many would think that the original is still better but would you say the same thing with what Simon Phillips did with Toto or Arnel Pineda with Journey? But it would still be fun if you're able to copy the whole thing...hehe.

I just memorize the song's format. If its a half-time groove, i try to come up with a different half time groove.

minsan lang ako magnote kapag sinisipag pero kadalasan, sa tenga ko lang yun tapos kapag nakuha ko na, I'll make make my own style na.
pero mas gusto ko parin yung kopyang kopya pero kung mas maganda yung style mo kesa sa original, doon ka nalang sa style mo.
