Recommendations.... Blues
« on: March 28, 2007, 12:56:12 PM »
Hi!!!

I'm introducing myself to Blues and I need some input. Gusto ko rin kasing matutong tumugtog ng blues. But first, like any other art, I need to be exposed to it.

Anyone have good suggestions for a listening session?

I like the upbeat blues sound
I also like BB Kings style.

Can anyone recommend albums I could listen to? Thanks a lot in advance!!!!

Don't trust me; trust Blues Access:

Actually, before the web, it was a wild goose chase.  All my leads came from books, articles, and album liner notes only.

If you want upbeat blues, SRV immediately comes to mind but this is more of a blues rock crossover.

If you want real electric upbeat blues, you can always buy anything from the Chess Records catalog. Now distributed by MCA Universal.

BUT BUT BUT YOU MUST HAVE ROBERT JOHNSON - THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS. YOU WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND ANY OTHER BLUES SUB FORMATS IF YOU DON'T HAVE THIS DOUBLE CD.
RJ LP Std.,Jackson DK2,Burns Brian May,Fender MIM Strat,Valencia EClassical,Nady UHF4,EHX Screaming Bird,Vox V847,Vox V830,Vox Tonelab SE,Vox Pathfinder 15R/Visual Sound J&H,Ibanez TS9 OD,MXR Analog Chorus, Boss BF2,Boss DD2,Line 6 Echo Park

tele-tubby: makes me smile to read comments like yours  :-). pre, got a hold of Robben Ford's Blue Line at Germany's Ohne Filter Musik TV show. If u haven't seen (and heard!) this one, check it out when you can take a break from whatever. I know how you feel bout his playing, but this performance is sweeeet!

bryan: you caught us off-guard! tell us where you are, malamang fellow forumites could give helpful tips on where to go, which clubs/bars to check out. pre pag umuwi ka, it's a standing invite sa Backdoor.

honga pala, hehe
nasa San Francisco ako, kaya dehins ko alam mga places sa Pinas.

Ang understanding ko kasi when it comes to music, to some people its an acquired taste, to some you grew up with it, to most, kung ano lang yung popular. Since blues has a mature sense to it, I need to build up a reference to it. Kinda introduce myself and immerse myself to it. Siyempre eventually it will help me out in the future to build my own sound, incorporated ng mga influences introduced.

Salamat sa invite. Baka end of the year pa ko umuwi, nag-iipon ng bakasyon, para engrande.  :-D

"From the Cradle" (album)
Eric Clapton
i learned more about the blues from this album.

"Since Ive been loving you"(song)
Led Zeppelin
if u think blues is just about that 3 or 4 chord progression...you should listen to this song. IMHO

...medyo limited exposure ko kay BB King...only saw tv performances and some clips off encarta(yep you heard me right)...pero mismo yang si BB.

ooooooooh
and dont forget...

hendrix
theres too many hendrix blues songs to mention eh.
Gibson SG Standard Silverburst
Siochi Custom Lead GT 50 Watt Head

Hey mga master, sinunod ko yung mga recommendations nyo. I got the following albums: BB King – King of the Blues, Albert King – Born Under a Bad Sign, Aaron ‘T-Bone’ Walker – Strong Monday Blues, Otis Rush – Blues Interaction, Elmore Jones – King of the Slide Guitar, Guitar Slim – Sufferin’ Mind.

I’m still looking for Stevie Ray Vaughnn stuff and possibly Robert Johnson.

Would you also buy Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf stuff?

uhmmm... Robben Ford doesn't move me in the right places either.  even his early "pure blues" work doesn't.  sure, he's a good guitarist technically but...

that's why i don't fully agree that Joey P is Robben Ford of the Philippines.  i say Joey P is better cuz he can make a grown man cry.   :-D

I must admit that Robben's playing has always been tinged with jazzy bits here and there, most specially in the late 80's-early 90's, but I hear a coming-of-age the past 2-3 years. Blues-wise, I mean. But I still need to hear that "one note". It has always been that single note that turned me on to electric blues. Still, Robben's fluidity I do appreciate.

Exactly... that "one note"... the "goosebump" note.

derek trucks. all his albums are worth a listen. he makes his guitar sing so effortlessly. his single notes are eerily voice-like. one of the few blues guitar players that i can really listen to.

caveat lang for bryan. i think derek trucks is the bees knees too. pero he's not purely a blues guitarist.  but he can dig as deep as any other -- past or present.

if you feel a bit overwhelmed, focus mo muna on the following. sila ang pinaka-accessible at most influential so a lot of other bluesmen actually just followed their footsteps.

Pre-war style: Robert Johnson, Big Bill Broonzy, Muddy Waters
Post-war modern style: Freddie King, Albert King, BB King
