Yes that's right!  I myself is building a snare drum size 12" x 8".  Its a standard size 12" tom from a Fernando trio toms ( yung pang ati-atihan).  I cover the existing holes and drill new ones for an 8-lug per head snare drum.  Its shell is made of poplar.  Its almost finished, probably tomorrow I can hear how it sounds.

Tumpak! Then again, nasa tuning na yun.

secret  :-D

seriously, its a real pain to make them. you just need the following:

- hack saw - lagareng bakal
- drill with 1/4" bit
- small flat file
- a lot of patience

use hack saw to cut the top and bottom horizontal lengths then drill both sides to cut the middle part free. then use the flat file to flatten the sides. apply patience when necessary

i never made this into a finished snare. the shell is still with me though. am keeping it as a souvenir

shell cost = 1500 for raw materials alone. mold and mold-making materials not included

I finally had my snare drum completed.

First the specs:

12x8 tom shell (from fernando trio toms, i think its made up of poplar wood), cover existing holes and re-drilled new holes to accomodate 8-lug per head hoops. Cut bearing edges and snare beds.

Install white acetate as covering material bought in Divisoria (store locaton courtesy of peeves)

Use remo coated ambassador on top and snare side on bottom.

20 strand Puresound Blasters snare wires

Tuned tight

After I finished assembling the drum and tried it out by itself, its a bit ringy but controlled.  Maganda rin gawin timbales.  It sounds semi dry, with lesser snare response considering its depth.  When i try to do a rimshot, this is where the fun begins!  It gives off a nice poppy sound, ala "Police".  I try to use it as a main snare and it serves the purpose well, it doesn't sound tinny but full bodied and gives a loud pop.  I just plan to use this as an aux snare pero gamitin ko muna main, hehe!

Here are the pix.

straight 45 degrees yung edge? walang counter cut sa labas?

i used to do that but i find that the snare rings too much for my taste. since then i cut my edges with another 45 degree on the outside. 70% on the inside and 30% on the outsite

i find having a 30-70 distribution to have the widest sweet spot on the center of the drum

using round over cuts dont differ much from the straight 45 degrees

Yes its straight 45 deg.  I just sand the outer edge a bit so i think the distribution is around 95% and 5%.  Ringy nga sya, malakas yung "toooiiinnng"  Gusto ko mas less nga yung ring.  Pag sinipag ako kalasin uli, lakihan ko yung counter cut.

About snare beds, ano comment mo dito, I had generalized this based on my experience, how about you? ---  Wider snare beds - more snare response but more prone to buzz.  If you aim for drier sound, narrower beds.  Having said that, the minimum width of the snare bed that I cut should always be a little wider than the snare wires that you are going to use.

Common practice ko, from the snare bed yung ramp ko will extend halfway between the two adjacent lugs.

4 lugs yung span kung 8 lugs lang na snare. maximum depth 1/8" at the lowest point (center) medyo mahirap lang pantayin to pero it doesnt buzz as much and i still get a lot of sensitivity

Thanks sa info mo sa snare beds, i try ko i modify minsan.  I also used 1/8" depth ng bed.  Yung pinaka una ko nagawa na snare 3/16" pa yung depth at wide yung ramp nya, kaya medyo may konting buzz kasi ako na experience, baka sa pagka cut ko lang, unang gawa ko pa lang kasi, still gaining from experience, hehe!  :-D

Ganda ng crack yet still had a very good snare sensitivity! Yung pag cut ko kasi by hand lang, using sandpaper.  :-(
