Decent jazz/blues guitar?
« on: July 12, 2007, 03:54:33 PM »
wellow. i'm quite new to this part of philmusic.. anyway, i'm becoming interested in learning to play "blues" blues (if i may use that) and jazz.. i can play and jam a bit, but i'm looking for a guitar that's gonna do the talking for me.. hmm.. wag tone is in the hands a.. we all know that equipment/gear is also part of the tonal equation.. so.. what's a good guitar to start with to play bluesy/jazzy tones? (what i specifically mean here is the fat and mellow tone to which blues and jazz can be played with) ... or kung may suggestions kayo and other thoughts, share niyo pa rin. baka mamaya pala, masyado pang makitid utak ko when it comes to playing these genres...

anyway.. is an SG good for both? les paul? strat? how about the 335/335 copies (ibanez artcore, etc.)? what can you suggest? thanks and good day :)

i found these videos on youtube that demo some guitars:

ibanez awd82:
(assessment: cheap, but nice tone! do you agree?)
ibanez as73:
mode=related&search= (assessment: so-so for me, what can you say?)
epiphone dot:
(assessment: astig din)
sg:
(assessment: astig din to)
les paul:
(assessment: astig din talaga to)

pero ako lang yan.. ano sa tingin niyo yung pinaka versatile din? at yung pinaka decent for both genres? hmmm thanks a :)

PS

wag lang gibson please. ang mahal. haha. yung feasible naman.. yung tipong.. 10-20k budget. :) maganda rin sana yung may dedicated volume and tone controls yung guitar.. a la LP :)

If it's for jazz AND blues, go get a semi-hollow. Hollowbodies are prone to feedback, which limits their usability for modern (loud) blues.

I like the Artcores. I have two of them (a hollowbody and a semi). There is a very nice looking AGS83B semi-hollow Artcore for sale in the classifieds for under 20k right now...

You could also use a tele. I think more jazz guitarists use Tele-like guitars (Ed Bickert, Ted Greene, Mike Stern, Bill Frisell) than Les Pauls. I can't think of anyone who plays jazz on a Les Paul, aside from Les Paul himself. It would do for blues though.

For jazz, change your strings to flatwounds for a darker tone and less string noise, use the neck pickup and roll back the tone knob.

Of course you can play jazz and blues on any guitar, etc.

Maybe we should move this to Guitar Central?

teles are gud, very verstile for jazz, i tried putting flatwounds on my tele, it's better compared sa hollows kasi kahit itodo ko yung overdrive indi ng fi-feedback..

pero tingin ko rin depende sa taste mo, any guitar will do para sakin... :-D

pwede naman flatwounds sa tele, babaan mo lng ng halfstep yung tuning para di mag warp yung neck.. hehehe! :-D

s mga links mo ung ephi ang gs2 ko, ayoko yta nung mga ibanez (don't ask me why, feel ko lng), personally,i don't mess around with d tone control that much, if i want some adjustments i do it in d amp, mas klaro, lumalabo lng pg s tone control eh.
a cliche but i'll say it anyway 'tone is really on ur fingers/feelings'. my motto 90% technique 10% equipment

AS73  :-D :-D :-D

favorite to ng mga tao. Great for jazz and T-Bone walker/John lee hooker blues. Ewan ko lang masyado sa mga texas blues  :-D

and bro, don't trust gearwire except for the rob math videos. Kasi the guys at gearwire usually have no idea what they're doing (look at the EHX HOG video to see what i mean).

Pero bro, search mo "Marshall Rob Math" sa youtube, ang galing niya sa lahat ng styles. He got a GREAAAAAT jazz tone from his ibanez through a marshall. NOT EXACTLY YOUR TRADITIONAL JAZZ GEAR EH?  :-D

Yup. Those ACH1/2 pickups are actually decent. I upgraded mine, though, on both my artcores.
