the main difference sa ESP at Caparison is that the Caparison is much more articulate for single note work than my ESPs. The design lends itself well to tapping and shredding type stuff, I think. Now, ESP can do that as well because a ton of shredders do use ESP guitars, however, I feel that my fingers feel more comfortable with the Caparison design because it is flatter than my Ganesa or my Viper. The thing with my ESPs though is that they stay in tune no matter what which is an amazing thing considering I battered my guitars when I was playing live. My Viper is a stop-tail but I had locking tuners installed on them before I got it and my Ganesa has a trem-setter in it to help the Floyd get back to pitch with heavy use. Both are bolt on guitars. The way I figured, if I broke the neck or headstock, replacing the neck wouldn't be as traumatic as getting a set neck or neck through guitar repaired.
Cost wise, Caparison's are a bit more expensive because the company is smaller but what you do buy is the same guitar that other artists use; everyone benefits from the same work. Caparisons can cost from $1,400 to $2,500 US. On the other hand, ESP has more products for people to choose from. You have LTDs, the Standards and a bunch of other Japan-only lines that only domestic merchants have access to like Edwards and grassroots. ESP Standard and Custom models can cost anywhere from $1,100 for Standards to $5,000 for Custom and Artist models. If you order from the Custom shop, your order will be processed at two locations, and depending on the design, they may work on your order in California or in the Tokyo Custom shop. For models that are available in Japan and in the US, the guys in California will work on your Custom. If the body template is a Japan-only design like the Ganesa, they will have to work on the item in Tokyo. Working time for a Custom ESP is anywhere from 6 months to a year depending on how busy the shop is at a given time.
My advice is this: like with any guitar, try them out first before you buy if at all possible. Hearing what others have to say about a guitar is different from what YOU feel with it as a player. Your fingers are different from mine and you will value other things about an axe that I might not. Preference is an important thing so check out a bunch of ESPs or Caparisons if you can but rest assured that they are all made well.
