is this still applicable?

Taking this maxim to heart, Page developed the idea of placing an additional microphone some distance from the amplifier (as much as twenty feet) and then recording the balance between the two. By adopting this technique, Page became one of the first British producers to record a band's "ambient sound" - the distance of a note's time-lag from one end of the room to the other. This technique was constantly adapted and developed, to the point where he placed microphones in hallways, which is how he achieved the distinctive drum sound for "When the Levee Breaks".

applicable to what? using a particular sound recording technique all depends on what sound you are looking to achieve. using room mics is fairly common now but it isn't always the best tool if you want to have a specific guitar sound. for instance, using ambient mics is not the best thing for really, in your face, huge sounding guitars that you would find in, say, a Rammstein or Helmet record because micing further away would take away from the buzz-saw guitar sound that these bands are known for in their music.

mixing in a bit of a room mic signal usually works well and I use the technique all the time. experimentation to achieve a guitar sound should always be on the top of your list because having different options in diff mic combinations will help you find that great guitar sound.

well, i guess it would depend on how much better the equipment has become since then, right? a lot of advances in acoustics and electronics will make the recordings using the same techniques sound a bit different and, depending on what you define as "good results," you could use the same techniques to achieve the similar results like Page got with his recordings. Now, I can't say there are any better techniques than what is described because, really, how different can you make ambient micing except change the environment you are in? I guess making Page's technique better would entail better mics, pres and better recording spaces to achieve a better recording which emulates the effect found on classic Zeppelin albums.
