What's your favorite tone in a jazz-fusion musical situation? I love Richie Kotzen's tone in The Inner Galactic Fusion Experience best. I just wish Greg Howe shared the same tone as RK's. I also love Shawn Lane's tone in the Powers Of Ten album. Scott Henderson with Tribal tech is another favorite.

My comments:

Greg Howe - great player, but I think his tone is too blanketed. According to him he uses the bridge pickup for the most part and adds a lot of mids and lows to the tone. Hence his sound. I would imagine how muddy he would sound on the neck pickup.

Allan Holdsworth - probably the benchmark of modern fusion playing, but his tone sounds a tad too round for me. Great playing but I want something more gritty.

Deryl Gabel - pretty much like Holdsworth too.

Al di Meola - His tone is ok for me. But not the tone I would chase to develop my own.

for me its wayne krantz, mike landau and larry carlton.

krantz has this crystal funky tone of a strat that i like the most, especially when he mutes the high strings! love his groove also!

landau is for the muddy tone.. love also the straty sound. they both uses suhr guitars.

and larry carlton... he have the best tone ever IMHO in jazz/blues!
