it depends on what you guys are playing. if you guys do covers done in dropped D then a seven string would be overkill na.
pero you can try ser like what I do, i tune the first 6 strings to Dropped D (dropped C# in our case) then I leave the 7th string tuned to B (A# in mine) and use it sparingly only for one note low end riffing. this way we can play our old tunes that were written for a 6 stringer but still reach down and do low notes.
pero if you plan to write songs that goes down to B or lower, i guess the other guitarist would either have to adjust his chording and both of you would have to discuss rythm chores.
yun lang mahirap pag 7 stringer, a 5 string bassist is advisable, and better if the other guitarist has a 7 string as well.
im not sure about the string gauge thing, i havent tried other gauges other than 0.09's
