It just came to me... grunge bands were grouped together not because of their music, but because they came from Seattle! I mean, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden definitely got their stuff mostly from classic rock, but Nirvana didnt... they sprung from punk. In a way, "grunge" was just a name for bands that came from (or sounded like the bands from) Seattle (at that time).

Maybe that's why grunge was short-lived... coz it's just a name.

IMHO.  The man who made grunge famous died early.  Kurt Cobain.

well, grunge was there even before there was "Kurt Cobain".

eg.

Neil Young
Soundgarden
Soul Asylum (much older than Soundgarden)

But Nirvana did popularize these underground bands in Seattle.  But you can't give Nirvana all the credit.  Seattle was torn between Pearl Jam and Nirvana at that time.

Before Nirvana and Pearl Jam, there were other purveyors of the grunge sound.  Bands like The Melvins, Mudhoney, Tad, The U-Men, Green River, The Fastbacks (even with an early lineup that included Duff McKagan on drums) and Mother Love Bone all made contributions to the sound as far back as 1985.  There's a section in Seattle's Experience Music Project museum that chronicles those days.  I'd take a picture of the museum pieces but they strictly don't allow cameras in the museum.

grunge?those were the days were you can really compare the depth of a songs lyrics as compared to 80s metal.parang nag ka laman ng utak ung mga rockers that time.imo grunge bands ushered in an era of very good lyricism, sinira lang ng panahon at ng pagbabago.

Speaking of grunge, I'll be catching a noontime performance of ex-Hammerbox and ex-Goodness vocalist Carrie Akre at the quadrangle right next to my office tomorrow.  I hope I could remember to take my camera along with me so that I could share the pictures.

i agree with this. grunge is just a "hip" name the same way they are selling "emo" now (apparently, emo has a real history *see the what is emo thread* as oppossed to grunge that is simply just a name).

-*-

OT:
i guess all trendy music have their strengths:

*hair metal = chops man! those scales and solos you can only hear in instrumental shows are now heard on radio.

*grunge = good lyrics. intelligence was the strength of grunge.

*kupaw metal = power of the groove + a good stage show (ala punk rock of the 70's), since well... its not hard to play a one finger chord, might as well jump like a jelly bean to make things interesting. and oh, i have to say that my fave guitar tones come from this era. i think disturbed sucks but when you hear that "uwa ah ah ah" then that opening riff to "down with the sickness" ... man, headbang time!

*emo = good song arrangements. considering that is a mix of different music styles.

maybe because a big influence like kurt died..there are other grunge bands but lets accept the fact that grunge music became famous because of nirvana/kurt cobain..

Grunge is not a real music genre. its a genre coined by publicists to promote bands in seattle... and after a whole load of bands cloned nirvana and pearl jam... the word grunge took off. but really, it is NOT A GENRE.

have you ever heard soundgarden, nirvana, pearl jam, alice in chains, mud honey, etc. say, "we play grunge music"

the ones who call themselves grunge or inspired by grunge are the poser bands who came out after the "seattle band explosion"

grunge literally means dirt btw... so you can forgive digitech for calling one of their pedals Grunge because eventhough they got it from DOD (who rode the name band wagon) ... it made sense since the grunge distortion pedal was after all high gain and really "dirty" - so to speak.

-*-

another name that is not a genre is "nu metal" ... its just a major label created term to promote bands who are inspired by metal and hip hop. i prefer to call them "one finger-one chord metal" .. but that takes too long. so i call them kupaw instead. hehe.
