Which ride can be "all-purpose"?
« on: May 24, 2009, 05:03:14 PM »
I've been wondering which ride cymbal to pray for, and I need some of your opinions mga sir at ma'am.

I'm looking for a generally versatile ride, yung pwedeng gamitin sa jazz, latin, pop, hanggang rock. Gusto ko kasi maganda definition niya, pero pwede pa rin i-crash. I was thinking 22" K Custom Medium Ride instead of just 20" so that it projects better, but then I'm also thinking that maybe it's too dark for some of the music we play. What do you guys think?

And don't get me wrong. I'm not looking to buy yet  :-D

for an all-purpose ride, what you're looking for is a good mix of stick definition and wash, and also perhaps a balance of ride characteristics and crash capability. you want the cymbal to sound good whether you're playing its bow, bell, or edge.

generally speaking, medium weight rides are the best examples of the above. of course, this is not always the case. for example, zildjian's 21" a sweet ride is medium weight but is too washy for heavier music. on the other hand, sabian's 20" hhx evolution ride is a thinner cymbal (about medium light) but is extremely versatile.

with that said, the 22" k custom medium is a good choice. it has all the above qualities (maybe lacking in the bell department, but this is on a case to case basis), and no, it isn't too dark for rock. for metal, maybe, but for straight up rock it should do fine.

Bakit ko pinakawalan? business is business =(

no doubt
k custom medium ride 20 or 22
k custom ride 20

yung k dark med thin 22" ok din kaya lang mahina siya for rock halos di ko marinig pag malakasan na

i have all these rides pero currently im using may k custom med ride 22 as my all around ride.
yung k custom ride naman malakas talaga siya as in pero sa jazz at blues parang over the limit na siya for me. kung gusto mo talaga makapagdecide punta ka dito sa bahay ko tapos iuwi mo na yung magugustuhan mo

the A Medium Ride is pretty much the original all-purpose ride, so yes. smaller cymbal = higher pitch

the K Custom Ride is too much for jazz. it's basically just a slightly darker rock ride.

the best para sakin yung a zildjian sweet ride... ang lupet nito, bro. Pwede siyang malaking crash, pwedeng light ride, pwede rin na normal na ride. Pakinggan mu at your local JB music store...

libre? sige ba! wahahaha

thanks for the comments! it's been a lot of help. what do you guys think of a 22" a custom medium ride though?

i've actually used a 22" k custom ride and a 22" avedis vintage ride. they had great ride characteristics but they weren't crashable. i'm thinking of a 22" ride and not just a 20" ride because i want it to project better for louder stuff, generally straight up rock or maybe alternative.

Usually medium weights offer more versatlity regardless of any model or brand. Just my thoughts kapatid. Medium weight rides offer a clear bell sound and a controlled wash and saturation. Some also use this as a Crash-Ride because of its volume and clarity. :-)

for me:
k custom medium ride 22"
k custom dark ride 20"
avedis sweet ride 21"

the k custom medium ride 22" offers more brighter stick definition than the dark ride but not too much wash. great loud bell. i find the k custom medium ride 22" drier in sound than the dark ride. the dark ride, however, offers a clear stick definition with a beautiful wash and also super crashable! for me, mas type ko ang bell ng dark ride, kase ang linaw and sakto yung pitch. the bow area has more dynamic range than the medium ride 22". both rides are excellent. but for overall versatility, the 20" dark ride is my choice. para saken lang mga kapatid kase pareho ko sila nagamit. maybe kase mas pasok siya sa playing style ko.

I've actually heard the dark ride already, but the drummer was using it more as a crash-ride. It sounded great as a crash, but I thought it was a little too dark for defined sticking. Then again, the sound man wasn't really that great too, so... :-D

i believe it's a matter of developing a touch for you to produce different sounds and subtleties on a complex-sounding k custom 20" dark ride. if you're a rock drummer then definitely you'll just be bashing this cymbal. not so great sounding for you, but for me it is. fits on my playing style and speaks exactly the way I want it to:wink:
