Deja vu,
Thanks for picking up on the topic. Yup, there are a lot of very cool, toneful and inspiring guitar solos out there that many of us just to tend to take for granted ...
Nice choices, by the way, especially Lukather's ending solo on 'Rosanna' ... man, that still sounds killer even to this day! Ditto for his other short but tasty fills in most of their popular songs ...
But should it be confined to just 'pop' songs?
Anyway, here are a few that come to mind:
1) Tiffany - 'All This Time' (ewwwww!!! I know, I know ... but it's just the solo that counts, right? I still don't know who did this .. any idea guys? very good paraphrasing. kinda cheesy, 80s tone, but it sounds killer when he does those artificial harmonics towards the solo's end
2) Tears for Fears - 'Everybody Wants to Rule the World' - I'm surprised no one's mentioned this. The overdriven ending solo ... now that's an example of few notes with a killer feel ...
3) Mr. Mister - 'Is It Love?' and 'Broken Wing' - another vote for another under-rated player: Steve Farris.
The breakdown solo on 'Is It Love' reminds me of Jeff Beck - sparse notes, mucho feel, great tone, unpredictable lines
4) Journey - 'Open Arms,' 'Separate Ways,' 'Send Her My Love' (actually, most of the songs on the 'Best of Journey' album). Neal Schon
5) Angela Bofill - 'This Time I'll Be Sweeter' - now, this song's got soul, thanks to the very subtle blues fills. I'm not sure now, but I think it was Eric Gale who played on this. Sounds like he got a nice phaser tone going.
Very sexy!
6) Commodores - 'I'm Easy' - I believe there's a remake of this enjoying airplay these days. But the original features a very short, but very lyrical solo ... 'coz I'm eaasssseehhh, easy like sunday morning ...
7) The Carpenters - 'Goodbye to Love' - Tony Peluso: great fuzz-like tone on an ES-335. Very much in the Carlton vein ...
