Any Issues Using Your Own Drums At Venue?
« Reply #303 on: September 13, 2013, 01:53:22 PM »
I know many venues have "house drums", but I was wondering if there is any problem bringing my complete drumset to a gig, and using it, instead of the worn out house kit? I can imagine the sound man might have objections, as to added set change time, and having to re-EQ, but do club owners allow one to use their own complete kit? Sorry if this has been asked previously, but I couldn't find the thread...

it made me realize that most of the bars here in manila are on the 2nd floor with no elevators - so for me, no i wont bring my own drums unless i have friends who can help me carry them up and down the bar.

im sure the owners wont mind as long as there is space. you will get nasty looks and some heckling from other bands from taking too long to setup :) and pushing them back from their slot.

another issue would be, some groups would take advantage and borrow stuff from you..even the whole kit..tapos pag medyo nag  "no" ka...maaangasan at magkainisan pa..remember yung culture natin na masyadong pinapansin at pinapakeelaman ang buhay ng mya buhay..hehe

its cool though! respect to you sa effort and giving the chance for the audience to experience good drums..and super fun at satisfying na pumalo using your own kickazz kit!

+1 to this! Tsk tsk tsk

From then on, pag kailangan ko talaga dalin yung kit ko nagha-hire ako ng tao.

pero to TS, just do it, enjoyin mo yung drumming experience..wala na ngang financial return ang pagtutgtog, tapos iprevent pa natin sarili natin ienjoy yung gear natin sa actual tugtugan..go lang!

For me it's worth it if I'm doing at least a 2-set thing (hindi yung 10-band prod stuff and the likes) and if the drums are real bad, as in kung matino pa ang tunog ng lamesa.

The sound man should have no objections if he sees that hindi ka ignorante sa house sound system stuff. Pero it's better to ask in advance, i.e., before you bring your drums in or even before planning on bringing your drums in (days in advance).

*sigh* when you play original music, you end up playing gigs with 10 other bands usually, 5 other bands if you are lucky, and 20 other bands if you are a noob with no clue.

set-up time then soundcheck is hell ... and for what? 10 songs if you are doing an EP launch, 4 songs usually, and 3 songs if you are a noob.

During one of the local jazz fests in the country some 8 or 9 years ago, I saw Koko Bermejo lug one whole Yamaha drum kit with him, tried to set things up backstage thinking that when it is their turn to play (IIRC, with Johnny Alegre, and as the backup band for Oranian Coltrane, son of John Coltrane), he can simply put it together and ask the PA dudes to mike it in.  Lo and behold, di siya pinayagan. :D

I do agree mga boss.

Snare, Cymbals, Pedal, Stands, Sticks. Minsan nagdadala pa ng toms. well, I see their point naman kasi very unreliable na ang stock equipment sa mga Bars ngayon. and siguro, dagdag dito they want to sound as consistent as possible.

i just want to share this clip, i know some of you might have seen it.

everything there is mine, except for the PA and monitors. we carried, set it all up, sound checked, and broke it down all by ourselves - mostly by me, because for some reason, people are always busy with something that does not involve setting up. but our drummer there was awesome, since he did most of the drum set-up when it was there onstage.

the kit was a bass drum, a tome, a snare, a floor tom ... and i think theres about 3 cymbals apart from the ride and the hi-hat

it was hard, especially since it was in the mall, so we had to go all around the mall just to bring it to that little thing they call a "stage" ... i am just glad that at least SM lent us some carts.

we spent 10 hours in the mall, played 10 songs - 2 songs per segment of the cosplay fest ... and we got paid 4k pesos for everything lol

some people would say its a crappy gig with bad sound, but ... its kinda actually the best we ever had, where we could hear everything, and got the sound we wanted off our guitars. i would want to agree but considering my past experiences, i think it is the best gig i ever played.

after the gig, one of the guitar players left. i guess it was too hard work for such little pay-off.

Nice! Alam mo bro ako din,for my own comfort I would rather go early and setup for my optimal playing rather than nag titiis dahil rockstar ang ako attitude.
Kudos for you sir!
I always bring my cymbals with felts at clutch,Minoan May kasama na snare or pedal, maybe both, depends on the bar.

Allen of Silent Sanctuary, pag nagtogs, bassdrum lang at cymbal stand lang ang ginagamit niya sa house. may dala siyang toms, snare, hardware, cymbals. gusto tlaga niya consistent sounding siguro.

Dati ganun din ako eh, truckloads of drum gear per gig, then I realized, nakakapagod din magbitbit ng gamit at mahirap masanay na laging complicated ang set up mo. kaya ngayon, cymbals at snare nalang ang dala ko hahahaha

Ako. I bring my own cymbals except sa (hihat at ride), sticks, pedals, stands and attachments, pamunas at bottled water. Ipon pa ako para sa snare drum. Hehehe.
Lasapin mo ang ambience ng gig. Kung masaya, mag enjoy ka lang.
Sulitin mo ang set nyo. Have fun playing.

Ako madalas after coming home from  gig lagi kong iniisip na may naiwan ako. Thankfully laging maling akala lang. Ang naexperience ko lang na maiwan ay cymbal sleeves with felts and some generic stick, which nakuha ko rin naman. Pag nasa gig, especially pag konti lang banda, make it a point na kausapin at maging mabait sa techs. Hehehe. It goes a long way. :)
