It has been a real long while since an update to my DIY refret project. Got sidetracked because a notched straightedge and bevel file tool from an Greek eBay seller did not arrive. I was able to get a refund but time was wasted waiting for it.
However, I still kept busy with some minor stuff and has since made my own bevel file tool with 90 and 30 degree slots and screws to hold the file in place...
I bought a notched straightedge (24.75" and 25.5" scales) from another seller on eBay and got it more than two weeks ago.
I had also decided to remove the frets I had installed before, cleaned off glue remnants with the aid of a precision screwdriver and a magnifying lamp, and taped them up in order on a piece of bond paper.
I lightly resanded the neck to remove the initial application of tru-oil I did more than a month ago, and restarted applying a layer of tru-oil every day (scuffed with steel wool #0000 before each layer of application).
I also learned that I got a smoother and more even application of tru-oil when using my finger with very very light wiping motions along the grain of the wood. I also always check light reflections on the board for smoothness and evenness of the application.
It was the final coat tonight and I'll let it cure for the next few days, reclean the slots and press-in the frets this coming weekend.
