Help! Alder Body Finish!
« on: April 14, 2015, 09:04:36 AM »
Mga master's!

Baka may makatulong sakin :)
Currently DIY restoring a bass, Already stripped to wood
and ongoing sanding process. Bka may makapag bigay ng
advice kung anung finish ang pwede sa Alder body.
Going for a natural finish, upon searching the net nakita kong
magandang pang finish is Tru Oil, sadly wala akong makitang
mabilan dito sa pinas. Is ther any alternative to Tru oil to
achieve the same results? Any help would be very much appreciated :)

Thanks!!!

I think some eBay sellers are able to ship tung oil finish internationally.

There is also shellac/french polish. It's not durable, but easy to re-apply or remove altogether if you get tired of it.

IIRC yung tru oil ay mixture ng linseed at uncatalysed urethane. Make sure you prep properly, sand up to at least 400 or 600. If you slack off on this part you will regret it :-)

It should still be reasonably rough or else there won't be anything for the finish to get a "grip" on.

issue ba yun pag oil finish? ako kasi hanggang 800 lang, super kinis na yun pero hindi sa level ng woodwork na super sanded. tumatanggap pa naman ng oil based stain. Pero pag higher kaya?

You're probably right. The wood will probably absorb the oil a bit before it hardens. How long did you wait for it to dry? How many coats did you make?

I advise against sanding too fine before finishing because I've seen a friend sand a guitar to 2000 before spraying only to find the lacquer fall off in flakes after a few months. I just assumed the oil might rub off easily.

Stain lang naman sya then poly, two coats of stain tapos three coats of poly. Di naman ako umabot ng 2000 I imagine sobrang kinis nun kahit ata stain irereject nya. May drum hoop ako na 1000 ko sinand, hindi masyado kumapit yung stain, at parang hindi kakapit yung poly nang maayos.

i see,

so mga 600 grit before applying the oil will do?
buti nsa 200 grit stage palang ako hehehe,
and anu masasabi niyo mga sir dun sa applying the oil
with sanding paper? base net, recommended siya para
mafill yung grains will applying the oil? though nakita ko
yun using Tru oil. Will it have the same purpose/effect
kung gagamit ako ng tung oil or danish oil?

again, maraming salamat sa mga tips sir!
will try ko post the ongong project pag natapos na 1 stage ng sanding hehehe

thanks!!!!

not sure about this, pero kung nasa 200 grit stage ka na, I think it's a good idea to apply sanding sealer, then you can go to 400 or 600 before applying the oil. If 400 is smooth enough for you (no sanding sealer) you can stop there, I think 800 might be too  much. di kasi ako gumagamit ng sanding sealer coz I like the grain being uneven (natural look ba), so I don't know if it will pose any issue when using oil finishes. nagrerepel kasi ng wood stain yung sanding sealer kaya di ko sure.

same here sir, i'm not planning to use the sanding sealer
goal to talaga yung tipong natural finish. I think i will go up to
600 grit as per your advice sir, hopefully maging ok ang results hehe
additional question sir, same process din ba sa neck???
and anu ginagawa ninyo sa mga cavities?
gngmitan pa ng paint or yung parang aluminum tape?

again thanks for all this advice!!! Very big help!!!

Keep them coming :)

Ok din yung sanding sealer for certain woods to "even out" the grain, like the basswood drums I worked on, maraming "soft" spots kaya naaabsorb masyado yung stain na ginamit ko. although I chose not to use sanding sealer so it kinda looks like beef more than wood, it may work better for you. di ko lang alam sa alder, I don't own any alder wood

sa cavities you can choose not to oil it, and if you plan on using aluminum tape, don't bother oiling the cavities, di naman makikita  kung kita galing sa labas (ala ringless humbuckers), it's worth the effort to oil it

@free2rock pag oil finish ba kailangan ng sanding between coats?

Try using egg white as sanding sealer. Use the egg yolk to make leche flan. :-D
