I don't recommend applying the sealer by hand kung ganun. Magbi-bleed yun. Not sure sa oil finish though. Applicable ang number one rule sa DIY/luthiery: TEST ON SCRAP

mga sir's! here i am again hehehe

i saw this sa net

http://www.chicagomusicexchange.com/collections/fender/products/fender-p-bass-natural-1977-s668

And i as of now i'm aiming to get the same body finish as this fender hehehe

Question, what kind of finish is on this fender? it said that this is ash
do you think it's a stain + poly finish? Or this is the natural color of an ash wood with poly?

Can i achieve this same color with my alder wood if i'm planning to use oil finish?
If it's stained, what color of stain shall i use to achieve the same color?

thanks in advance masters!

Parang yun na ata yun, just the wood and varnish/poly.

If your wood is darker, you can't stain it, as stain is subtractive.

If your wood is lighter, go find a piece of scrap wood or a drum stick (I like drum sticks, they're dense) that is really close to the color of your wood and bring it to the hardware store to get an approximation of the color you might get. Approximation because the density, grain, and color of the wood will affect how and how much stain will be absorbed.

Ash is lighter in color. The guitar is in a natural finish (clear poly most likely). Alder has a much richer color than Ash (but not too much, I'll see if I can post a pic sude by side to show you what I mean). I know wood bleach exists but not sure if it's locally available.

I have used regular bleach to de-oxidize wood when I've good too far in aging it. I don't think it will work to lighten Alder to Ash-like colors.

pag wood bleach parang yung binaba mo lang yung color value nung wood (parang saturation slider sa instagram), pero hindi mo maiiba yung color nya mismo. Magumukha sigurong pine wood yung alder mo pag nagkataon

@free2rock pano makukuha yung lacquer finish na gamit varnish/poly lang? double digit number of coats with sanding in between? di ako marunong slash takot ako gumamit ng lacquer kasi wala naman akong proper wood shop tools

Thanks sa mabilis n reply mga sir!!!

I'm almost at the final sanding stage right now,
and trying to decide if i'll go with the oil or the poly finish  :-D

Now, will i achieve the color that i'm going for if i use either the
oil or poly? I'm thinking about settling for the poly (semi-gloss)
finish because it's highly available than tung/danish oil. Or if i can
achieve that color/gloss look in oil finish, i might wait for a while
until i can fins the suitable oil to achieve that finish hehehe

Again, Salamat ng madami mga master's!!!!

Keep them coming!

Lacquer is fun to use. You don't need to "build up" and sand in between coats because the succeeding coat will "melt" with the previous coat making it one homogenous coat--unlike poly where you build up succeeding coats. The key to getting a good surface on your lacquer finish is highly dependent on the surface preperation before you spray (i.e., sanding and pore filling). Lacquer is easily repairable too. If you make a mistake, wipe with a rag soaked with thinner or just scrape with a utility blade.

5-8 coats would do. It dries to a pretty thin film. Lacquer is more solvent than solid (as opposed to poly). The downside is it takes a while for it to fully dry before you can buff, but I have tried to spray a very thin coat--dried within a few days.

Oil has a teeny bit of color to it so it will warm up the color of the wood as you apply it. Poly doesn't AFAIK.

Sir free2rock, nababasa ko kasi sa net, ok din ang wipe-on-poly.
And mas durable siya, may available ba nito sa pinas?

Here's the comparison photo of alder and ash as promised. Left is Ash, Right Alder.

personally, I'd stain the ash with a walnut stain then lacquer it. I'd give the alder a nice oil finish, but maybe not a lacquer. ako lang yun @omeng ha!

Wah! Thanks for this sir!

Parang mali ata ako! I think the body of my bass is Ash!
Based on this pics, the body of my bass is highly similar
to the Ash. But i read on the net, the body is a 3pc. alder wood
:-D hindi kasi ako mkpost dito ng pics hehehe, what can you say about
this sir? base on the pic? most likely, Ash or Alder?

http://muzbass.ru/products/1838/

pics are not mine but it's the same bass that i'm trying to restore :)

@Sonicassault

sir, most probably kung ash siya e the same process gagawin ko, stain then laquer
or stain and poly? hehehe pero im leaning on a golden yellow stain, i think that's the
closest color of stain to achieve yung hinahabol kong kulay hehehe

hindi ko pa din masabi sir kung anu tlga yung fretboard

sa ngayon kasi poly ata yung finish niya hehehe

this is the pic of the bass when i got it hehehe

http://d24iimykcnrplv.cloudfront.net/20150212014134-1423725321106.jpg

based on the serial at the neck plate, it's a 1981 Aria Pro II Primary Bass
and i think it's pretty rare so i bought it in a very cheap price and
decided to "try" to restore it hehehe
