tips for blues playing
« on: May 22, 2007, 12:01:23 PM »
hey guys..

i've been trying to play the blues since i was a child. in my province, lahat kasi mostly into cowboy stuff and blues stuff. i know how to do blues with my harmonica but that's another thing.

the thing is i'm an average guitar player who knows average guitar licks. and i'm trying to learn new licks. nagdownload naman ako ng mga blues books pero di pa rin eh.

ano kaya kulang.. basically yung bends ko kulang pa talaga.. kamay ko di naman mabagal.. pero i lack that blues spirit.. or better yet i lack soul..

hmmmmm.. ano kaya suggestions niyo on what i should look at?

salamat guys..

Here's my 2 centavos' worth:

Stick to the pentatonic scales bro... then add some bends and vibratos!!!

And do listen to really old blues songs.

What about starting with 60s Clapton? That's like learning blues licks 101. Parang rudiments. Then move on to the heavy stuff later on :)

Look for Cream. It's not pure blues, but it will wean your fingers slowly into it.

just to be clear with the blues harp na sinabi ko sa first part ng thread..

ganito yan.. hehe.. marunong akong magharmonica..

if 60's clapton will be your starting point, i suggest you start with "john mayall blues breakers with eric clapton" AKA "the beano album".

bro, if i may add, ok din pag-aralan mo yun pag shift ni clapton from alternating major and minor scales when he's soloing.  you'll learn to establish tension and release since the two scales create different moods.

yup the pentatonic!

when i started playin guitar, i'd just jam to hendrix's "red house" over and over on single repeat.  probably best to just jam to a blues song you like.  till your ears and fingers get used to the blues.

hmmm....aside from listening more to other blues specialist and strengthening your bending, i have another idea. What if your translate your harmonica blues playing to guitar. play the blues song from your harmonica to your guitar. I think that will give you a kick. let me know what happens ha
