He's not heard often, but you should check out Joey Puyat (formerly of Mexicali Blues Band and the Blue Rats). His last band is more in the jazz/fusion vein, called Mother Earth. His aproach to the blues is via thejazz route, sort of like Robben Ford (of "Robben Ford and The Blue Line"). He doesn't play tired old blues "licks" and phrases, he improvises lines like a jazzman.

Wally Gonzales and Jun Lopito. There are others who say they play the blues but don't really know what the blues encompasses !! Magaling na gitarista pero hindi talaga blues ang tugtog.

The Bleu Rascals with Paul Marney Leobrera. "No Compromise" Blues -- great to hear too because they are so young and committed to the blues. They are the likely torch bearers of the future, and you can catch them now.

Joric Maglanque (deltaslim). For his versatility. His style of playing is not limited to just those flashy, beaten-to-death, electric blues cliché. He can do acoustic blues of diverse sub-genre (ragtime, Piedmont, etc), electric and acoustic slide in the style of Delta Blues to Derek Trucks, and everything in between. And of course, the beaten-to-death blues cliché.
And he can do vocals on top of that. Ever tried singing while playing ragtime with alternating bass line? Or sing Delta Blues with alternating bass line and slide guitar harmony all at the same time?

Yep, Joric's great! Unfortunately, he's based in New York for the time being. Gotta get him back here -- it's been a loss for the blues scene here over the last year or so.

Blues, kahit mejo nagiging underground dito sa Pinas, is very much alive and well...daming magaling na gitarista na nag-co-cover ng blues...pero mangilan ngilan lang talaga yung nakakahuli nung sarap, lagkit, at yung totoong feel neto....Paul Marney Leobrera of the Bleu Rascals, for me, ang isa sa pinakamahusay na blues guitarist/vocalist dito saten...huling huli ang "libog" ng blues IMHO. :-D

Hint lang.... the secret is not in the guitar playing.... it's mostly in the drumming. Mabibilang mo sa isang kamay and mga drummer dito sa 'pinas na nakakapalo ng authentic blues shuffle, na siyang nagbibigay ng lagkit at libog ng blues. Most local guys who try to play the blues are rock drummers who hear the beat on 1 and 3.... tuluyan nagiging run-of-the-mill blues-rock ang pulso ng kanta, like any high school or garage band. Magaling ang gitarista, poste ang bahista, pero kung 1 and 3 ang drummer, hanggang blues-rock lang resulta -- galit pero walang libog. The guys who know what they are doing hear the beat on 2 and 4 -- like the old time R&B dudes and the Chicago school -- that's where the grease and lagkit resides.

Pinoy pa rin naman si Joric ah.  :-D Blues pa rin ang tinutugtog (sa Subway train pa nga eh, haha!).
