important question for artists
« on: October 11, 2007, 06:58:45 AM »
Talent is just one ingredient to be an artist but what makes a great artist/musician is his/her VISION that he can solidly defend. There were a lot of talented musicians out there who just wander around not knowing what they want and even doing what they don't want which is horrible. So no matter what style you play jazz, pop, death metal etc. The question is:

                                    What is your vision?

I like jazz, so I guess I'll go with jazz tunes. But at the same time, I think it's also fair that I use the music that God gave us for glorifying him and spreading His love.

So, siguro my vision is Gospel Jazz music (parang Gospel truth ba? Hehe, but you know what I mean).

Hindi ba parang napaka-ankop? Especially when you make the music play you; it's like letting God play you, and what man can see is improvisation. So para kang nagto-tongues sa music, hehe. :-D But seriously, when you play with your heart without thinking, I think you transcend into a more spiritual level - this way i think you can almost feel heaven (to those that are reaching this level already, ain't it so?)

I can almost see it, hear it - teka, practice pa muna.  :-D

Expression.. I beleive that music is an artist's way of expressing his/her thoughts about something..

Me as an artist I also express thru my designs and artworks.. drawings and poetry.. something that I can usually turn into when im tired, stressed, happy and angry.. a release ika nga

So in my music naman I depend on my emotions and beleifs.. I always include reality into my work para ndi naman masyadong out of this world..

mejo political nga lang din yung iba since mejo radical idealist ako
imma badass!! <funky guitar rift>

I'm still writing a novel about my vision hhahaaha :-D and it still develop through out the years. This is the short version:

qua music:
1. I'm always been fascinated in groove world music i.e. african, brazilian, cuban and the likes.
2. I'm still listening a lot on those old school jazz (50,60,70's) those still teach me a lot and I mean a lot.
3. I truly liked soulful players,  george benson, chet baker to name a few.
4. Although I'm trying to play and explore some difficult fusion stuff (just trying), I still listen and play some good pop tunes every now and then, I can't just take that away.
5. Just playing an acoustic softy jazz guitar would never satisfy me, I've always wanted that overdriven/slightly distorted guitar sound.
--All of these shape my musical vision

qua spiritual:
freedom, passion, humility, inspiration from a moment, LOVE and the list goes on...

____thanks for the replies to this post, let's inspire each other. Share the gift/love 8-)

right, live like you're in heaven rather than live to go to heaven...

Di ba?

While music is high art, refined magic, an incredibly sacred callling, it's also equally true that in the end, it's just music.

Ultimately, music is just sounds in the air.

That's all it is.

Just sounds in the air.

No more important than a jeepney's horn, a hawker's cry, a traffic enforcer's whistle.

Just sounds in the air. That's all it is.

... in fact...

Perhaps if one were to indulge in less self-important preciousness, one's music would grow exponentially.

Maybe even grow into Music with a pretentiously capital M.

Perhaps.

Who knows?

From the great pop artist to the great free jazz musician, their talent is not the only reason for their greatness neither if they can perform some exhibition or something. It's their vision, a vision that they can solidly defend no matter how other people view it and put it down...

it has been my dream to make a difference in this world through my music... i know it sounds far fetched, but the idea is to start small and enjoy the ride. through small gigs and through my friends, i hope that my band's music can bring them inspiration and through it, may they learn something or relate with it in different levels.

simula ka lang muna dun..kasi di pa naman kilala kahit sa pinas lang... at least when it's all said and done..you knew you wanteed it to happen, and tried to make a difference...whether big or small, doesn't matter ...
music is a system, upon development depicts life itself...
