I play matched, French. I dunno why, but when I first tried to play matched, my thumbs just went on top. It's easier, in a way. Kakapagod lang nga when you're really laying it in... which is when I go American or German, just to rest.
I also practice with a trad grip, but I can't get enough volume from it. Stewart Copeland swears by the traditional grip, saying it can produce more volume than matched, given the right technique. I have yet to find out for myself.
Nice link, autoexec. :)

oo nga tama.
mukhang masarap ding mag open hand.

ME bwahahahaha
but im not really enjoying it now. its too damn confusing man. sometimes you want to do it right lead but your head tells you to do it left lead. my left is more independent and more powerful, can do crazy patterns on the left that i cant on my right. my right is faster and more dynamic, i do straight 16ths better and faster on this hand than my left.
i only found out about this a few months ago at the supermarket while figuring out the latin grooves that sir mar taught me.
i used to write on both left and right hands too (upto grade 3). pero kahit aling kamay gamitin ko, pangit pa rin sulat ko so what's the use? as i grew older, mas naging natural yung pagiging kaliwete ko.
Hello Drummers! just a simple question... do u guys play double strokes accenting on the first or second stroke? i watched creative control by thomas lang and he accents on the 2nd stroke. it sounds better when played at a faster tempo.
just wondering if u guys do the same thing... thnks.

Tnx
Quote from: autoexec

Paano ba, yung sabay-sabay lahat?
can i ask.. or am i so dumb.. whats a moeller technique?? im shifting to drums that's why i want to know this stuffs.. anyone can help me??
depende naman yan sa player eh
OT - sir bammbamm, may alam po ba kayong music store sa guangzhou area?

Mga tol, may mga nakikita akong drummer na they have full control of the stick:
- galing mag accent at maghina
how do they do it?
a newbie question from an absolute newbie :|
when watching weckl's and igoe's lesson on grip, napansin ko na kay igoe, yung thumb nya medyo sideways and pallm down when he's doing the 4 and 16 demo excercises sa table. kay weckl naman, in-emphasize nya na dapat firm yung grip at dapat facing upward yung thumb to get more stick control.
my question is iba ba ang ideal grip sa hi-hat compared sa snare? what's the ideal grip? although parang mas maganda nga ang grip na tinuturo ni weckl, medyo kailangan talaga muna mag-build ng strength bago magawa.
ako hanggang ngayon dinidiskubre ko pa rin yan kasi napakaraming grip talaga meron ngang iba magkaiba yung grip sa kaliwat kanan....for example open handed tapos yung kaliwa naman palm down yung iba naman baliktad....so siguro saan ka magiging komportable hehehehe....GodBless
palm down my friend, bec you dont want to hurt yourself like the drummer of CHICAGO. but iba na usapan kpag nag "swing kna sa ride" kasefinger control na un. look and jazz artist kpag nag swiswing sila sa ride nila.
i think palm down is the most appropriate, why? eto experiiment- itaas mo kamay mo parang nka panatang makabayan. 2) relax and let the gravity pull down your palm. kung pano siya bumagsak, that same motion dapat i-apply mo sa drums kase thats how our wrist works. kung iibahin mo motion(natural na kilos) niyan u might hurt yourself. ENJOY!!!

let me thank all the drum gurus who provided this enlightenment 8-)
OT, just one quick question: ano ba yung drum lick? or is there such a technique? i want to try it sana the way i understand it pero parang nakakahiya, baka pagtawanan ako. hehehe.

kung fu is the only way
heeeeyaaa!
practice nlang talaga siguro......at saka Kung Fu?!?

pano i off yung adrenaline? :DEwan ko, sa akin kasi ang tanong eh pano i on eh, bihira lang umandar ang adrenaline ko.. :D
medyo nangigigiL nga Lang ako kasi death metaL madaLas kong tugtugin.. anyways, saLamat sa tips and expLanations nyong Lahat.. :-)
hmmmm suggestion ko pag aralan mong pumitik gamit ang stick ...parang nag lalatigo ... hayaan mong mag resonate yung skin ... panoorin mo yung training ni ippo ( boxing cartoons ) ... hehehe sana makatulong
learn how to conserve energy without sacrificing your groove....
Totoo yan. Sabi ni Dave Weckl, mapa-trad or matched grip ka, walang kaso yun.
problem is i dun have a drumpad.. yoko bumili kc mahal eh.. so sa hita nlang ako pumapalo-palo.. meron nman akong drumset.. but there goes my 2nd problem.. my mother. :|
2. brush your teeth using your left hand
3. pagnagsasalin ng tubig mula sa pitchel
4. pagbukas ng pinto
5. at syempre, use your left pagmagkakamot ng wetfox.

Hey guys, baguhan lang sa forum, just wanna ask something, since this thread is already about Grip Technique. Sensya na lang kung nakaka gulo dahil luma na yung thread.go watch jojo mayer's dvd (ehem legally or otherwise), it's a bible for technique. siguradong ma-iimprove mo technique mo dun, intindihin mo lang.
my opinion is that if you're hurting yourself, then there's something wrong with how you approach your technique. (italicized because i also believe that there is no right or wrong way with drumming, only bad choices and approaches)
go watch jojo mayer's dvd
Eto rin ang weakness ko! :-Dwelcome to the club, brad! XD
PS. french grip/finger technique po gamit ko, kaya [chewbacca] ako sa german grip/palm down/wrist. hindi rin ako willing mag invest ng time para sa push-pull technique. finger all the way po ako. :-D
moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller moeller

@phfreq
thanks for that exercise, i'll try to practice it in class/on pillows/etc. lagi na kong may dalang mas mabigat na stick ngayon para kung walang magawa sa class may speed practice ako.
pinanood ko lang yung valving technique tas umayaw na ko e. same with the push-pull. hirap talaga, kelangan talaga dedication at tiyaga e. wala ako nun pag dating sa pagaaral ng bagong techniques, kasi mas focused ako sa musicianship/groove. si dheniz nakita ko na dati mag push-pull, ang galing at ang bilis.
@dheniz
yep thank you sa tips, ngayon pag nagpapraktis ako sa hita, tinitignan kong mabuti yung technique. paunti unti ko palang na lo-loosen yung kanang kamay ko, yung kaliwa no problem, pero ang nagyayari pag mabilis na blast beat, napupunta yung kamay ko sa gitna ng stick (pero di na lumalampas pa dun), panibagong observation nanaman to kung anong mali. ano kayang dulot nito, may idea ka? or normal lang to? (i doubt it)
@dheniz
@dheniz
hehe ok tenks ulit pre. libre kita beer (o softdrink. o iced tea) next time. :)
YAN MA PRAPRACTICE YANG KALIWA MO!!! :-D
hopethis helps...
kelangan mo build ung muscles nang left hand mo to be able to keep up with your right hand. If you are right handed, use your left hand more often. For example when using your cellphone (texting), while eating, while using your mouse sa PC etc... then you can try using open hand technique, umpisa ka sa madadaling beat, 4/4 basic beat with a metronome. Start slow and build your way up. Another thing, when practicing fills/rolls, lead with your left hand. As what brokensticks said, include mo accents when practicing.
Ganyan ginagawa until now, I can feel some improvements after two weeks of using my left hand frequently. At first awkward talaga, hirap na hirap ako mag roll starting with my left hand but now medyo comfortable nako. Practice lang ng practice with a metronome para masanay. hth
one of the best way to improve your left hand especially sa wrist mo... hahaha nice one tiyo paeng!
Sorry. :-D
john_jason, nagtuturo ba si otep?
slow tempo muna then pabilis ng pabilis just like how you practice other rudiments.
bro, depende yan kung saang technique ka mas kumportable. try mo practisin pareho makukuha mo din yan, start very slow and always practice with a metronome para namomonitor mo kung nag-iimprove yung technique na ginagawa mo :-)
it takes time, practice and a LOT of patience :-D

di ko macontrol yung bounce ko e.. pero practice!!! practice lang ng practice!!! gagaling din ako..1 hour or 2 hours bago matulog using practice pad at metronome....aaminin ko sayo ingat lang ah,ilang beses din ako naipitan ng ugat,or npilay, maskit kasi ika nga NO PAIN NO GAIN!!! :-D :-D :-D
pano kaya maging relaxed ang arms pag nag ro-roll?
Answer: Relax ka lang... hehe
"If you feel the pain, STOP, RELAX, and have a BREAK. After 15-20mins you can practice again, don't force your muscles to do the job that you can't anymore."
it doesn't make a differance men... and if I wer u... I'd still practice the Right handed kit...
