Mga tol, may mga nakikita akong drummer na they have full control of the stick:
- galing mag accent at maghina

how do they do it?

basic question on grip
« Reply #128 on: January 11, 2007, 12:41:28 PM »

a newbie question from an absolute newbie  :|

when watching weckl's and igoe's lesson on grip, napansin ko na kay igoe, yung thumb nya medyo sideways and pallm down when he's doing the 4 and 16 demo excercises sa table. kay weckl naman, in-emphasize nya na dapat firm yung grip at dapat facing upward yung thumb to get more stick control.

my question is iba ba ang ideal grip sa hi-hat compared sa snare? what's the ideal grip? although parang mas maganda nga ang grip na tinuturo ni weckl, medyo kailangan talaga muna mag-build ng strength bago magawa.

a suggestion from a newbie too, d ba 2 kinds of grip meron ung traditional at matched ung sa matched para sa akin ay mag-imagine ka na may ibon as in bird sa kamay mo pag masyadong mahigpit ung hawak mo eh d deds ang ibon pag masyadong maluwag eh d makakalipad sa matched kc d ba ang fulcrum nun sa thumb at pointy finger kasi habang bumibilis ka ng palo d mo namamalayan nagagawa mo na ung thumb mo ay medyo sideways parang automatic na nangyayari un subukan panoorin ung kay jim chapin speed, power, endurance inexplain ung mga grip tungkol naman sa grip sa snare at hi-hat para sa akin i use both traditional grip.... d kya sinasabi mong palm down at sideways ung thumb ay moeller technique?? hope that helps

i think the question was about the french (taas yung finger), german (palm down), and american ( in-between) grip ng matched grip.

palm down my friend, bec you dont want to hurt yourself like the drummer of CHICAGO. but iba na usapan kpag nag "swing kna sa ride" kasefinger control na un. look and jazz artist kpag nag swiswing sila sa ride nila.

i think palm down is the most appropriate, why? eto experiiment- itaas mo kamay mo parang nka panatang makabayan. 2) relax and let the gravity pull down your palm. kung pano siya bumagsak, that same motion dapat i-apply mo sa drums kase thats how our wrist works. kung iibahin mo motion(natural na kilos) niyan u might hurt yourself. ENJOY!!!

my suggestion is to try practicing single or double strokes.

whichever makes you feel comfortable, relax and efficient..then stick to it.

in other words, study what grip works best for you.

Correct!

Walang rules dyan! :-D

Hanap ka ng Video ni Steve Smith, kung me 2.5 to 3K ka magkakaroon ka ng original copy :-D

It's all about how you are comfortable with the stick. Bahala ka na dun, if you think you can play great with the traditional grip, fine. pero most common na ang matched grip players sa atin. I can play trad grip but not for long. di pa ako sanay eh. mas fully function ang arms ko sa matched grip.  fluid talaga sya para sa akin

@topic
pede ba mag rimshot kapag naka trad grip?

yup pwede  :-D pero kailangan mo taasan yung height nung snare..
diba karaniwan yung height nung snare kapantay nung hip?

let me thank all the drum gurus who provided this enlightenment  8-)

so there's no ideal grip pala, as long as its safe and it wont cause long term injury, pwedeng praktisin.

personally, i go for french, i've been practicing weckl's technique for at least 5 mins a day lang. after three weeks, i gained more stick control when doing fills.

OT, just one quick question: ano ba yung drum lick? or is there such a technique? i want to try it sana the way i understand it pero parang nakakahiya, baka pagtawanan ako. hehehe.

Lick... It's a term used by musicians, and these refer to musical phrases, patterns or a series of notes which make up a great musical part.  Hence, we talk, share and learn about drum licks, guitar licks, bass licks, etc.

For example, if we use it in a conversation...  Jeff Porcaro's Rosanna shuffle groove, John Bonham's drum intro on Rock & Roll, Neil Peart's killer fill-ins on Tom Sawyer... These are great drum licks!

How can I have a faster left hand without resorting to kung fu?
« Reply #144 on: March 14, 2007, 09:53:27 AM »

Any suggestions?

heeeeya gep..how are you.......

well the thing you are experiencing is normal, this happens to a lot of drummers..that includes me...

i aint no drum wizard and i know i have my own weak points too, just like any other drummers do..to help you more with your question, the name of the game now is how you eliminate those weak points...

the LLR you've mentioned is a nice excercise...just keep on practicin that and i suggest make it reserve sometimes make it RLL...try to play open handed too..make your left hand as your main arm..its was Dom Famularo who strongly influenced me with that...well its hard at first but its all worth it..haha..

practice makes perfect man, keep on doin that and always stay motivated..cheers

I think na very normal lang na weak ang left hand mo if you're born right handed (weak right-hand for those left handed) for obvious reasons, since you we're little, right hand ang lagi mong gamit so naiwan sa development ang left hand mo. I don't recall where I read this but when Carter Beauford was starting he said that in order for his left hand to keep up with his right hand, he utilizes his left hand what his right hand usually does. Pag-kumakain siya nasa left hand niya ang spoon, the remote is always on his left hand, etc.
But nothing still beats good old practice. Tuloy lang ang practice. What goes with your right hand also goes with your left.
Carpe Diem
