After all the discussion that went on regarding the best cable money could buy, what are you all using?
I'll start. I have Planet Waves between my PRS Soapbar/Ibanez Artstar and the pedal board. George L's on my pedal board and between the board and my Fender Twin. I find having George L's all the way through is too bright for me so I use the Planet Waves to sort of "warm" it up a bit.
So let's hear what everyone else uses.

Neutriks ...
My cats like 'em more than my dogs, since you can't teach old dogs Neutriks ...
(ewwwww! :D )
(canned cat laughter please ...) :D :D :D

Klotz are the ones I'm using now.

LOL!
Ako "telephone" style cables from Raon pang bahay. Neutriks (from Audiophile?) sa gig.
-
planet waves and home made cables...
-
Klotz La Grange, Neutrik connectors, from audiophile.
These are the most "bang for your hard earned peso" cables.
For my mini connectors, i used to use radio shack patch cables but the get busted after a few months. the patch cables from lazer (dinosaur) do the trick, their shortness dont seem to affect the tone much, considering that i use them to hook up just my ibanez mostortion and wah to my dg-stomp.
can't teach an old dog neutriks? i'd rather be an old dog than a dinosaur! hahahaha!
-
Same here Neutrik connectors from Audiophile. Not sure what brand the cables are but got them from Audiophile as well. Amazingly these cables have lasted me almost a decade. Well, I'm not a touring musician so I wouldn't say that these cables have been subjected to road abuse. Nonetheless they're very sturdy and sound quite decent as well.
-
Planet waves from amp to pedal board..
Boss cables between pedals
Planet waves from pedal board to guitar
-
daTI RAON made cables - grabe sa ingay
now i use Klotz cables (yellow and pink)
peavey patch cables :)

i use Monster Cables, Groove Plugs and Klotz Cables with Neutrik plugs. i'm planning to buy better cables for my trip this week :)

-some no-name cable from guitar to stomp boxes
-Proel Diehard cables between stomps
-some no-name cable from effects to amp
any of you guys heard about this PROEL brand? its the only one available where i'm at that looks competent. although i don't really care much for cables. as long as it's working and there's no hum, it's fine with me :)
-
George L patch and Live Wire guitar cables.
-
Fender California Cable to pedalboard, generic patch cables, and Canare GS6 /Neutrik plugs to amp
-
"hum"less ba ang klotz + neutriks? grabe nagdadalwang icip aco, muckang holdap sa presyo eh :D
-
klotz is the best bang for the buck cable you could buy locally. so good that i'll be getting another pair. if there's hum, the first i'll probably check is my guitar.
sa bahay, george l's. sa gig, klotz or whirlwind. i'd like to add some more pero next year na. dami pa kelangan gastusan :)

where can one buy klotz? is it just a cable w/o the plugs?
-
-
quantum cables and connectors..it;s been with me for some time na..hehe..then lazer patch cables lang for the effects..:)
-
si klotz la grange (homa-made with neutrik plugs + heatshrink tubes) most of the time, but for "hostile environments," gamit ko si indestructible dimarzio cable ko (masyado matigas to for "normal" use) hehe

this may sound dumb, but yung ginagamit ba ninyong cables are microphone cables or instrument cables? kasi yung mga ibang pre-made cables eh Klotz microphone cables with Neutrik plugs. instrument cables kasi ginagamit ko e, i haven't tried using microphone cables to connect my guitar to my pboard in/amp in. ano difference ng signal quality pag microphone cables ang ginamit sa guitar? meron kasi sa Electronics Depot ng Quantum mic cable.. maganda yung construction nya, shielded and everything but of course, i want to ask the people here first before actually buying.
-
me? i make my own cables.. i get old mics, cut them wires to pieces, buy heads at DEECO, and solder them.. (well, that's for patch cables).. for my long cables, i still use my first guitar cable (well, the cable only, minus the heads).. and cut mic cables, and again, will buy one head (ok pa naman yung kabila), then solder... the only cables that i bought were my first 2 cables, and a lazer cable.. wala akong budget pang cables eh. hehe. nga pala, yung patch cables na iba ko, galing kay greg (maniacally cool).. i traded my boss metal zone box for 2. haay.. buti pa kayo.. :(
-
i make my own cable din... hehe! bili ako sa SM Ace Hardware ng Swan (MIJ) Mic Cable 10 meters then cut ko sa 3, tapos bili ng 6 mono head. then charan!!.... instant cables! 3.5 meter each... oks nman walang hum.
-
DIYers!! lumabas na kayo!! hahahaha! :D haay.. sana may maganda akong cables pa rin.. :(
-
DEECO :)
-
laging out of stock yon sa deeco eh. them little buggers are selling like hotcakes.
-
ako gusto kong mag-DIY, pero gusto ko mamahalin, hahaha. i want to buy neutrik plugs and a good mic cable. mahal ata ang klotz eh no? so baka neutrik narin, hehe. na-eexcite ako sa thought ng pag-solder, hehehe. wala lang, hehe. childhood dream, hahaha.
-
Klotz instrument cables gamit ko
-

I use instrument cables. I think i've tried mic cables dati. i just can't remember how it performed.
-
I use a Klotz cable and a Fender California Cable with a Neutrik plug on one end.
-
@kuls, ang ginagamit mo bang pang solder eh yung parang ballpen-type? yung malinggit lang?
-
@kuls, ang ginagamit mo bang pang solder eh yung parang ballpen-type? yung malinggit lang?
ballpen-type. yung normal electrician pang-hinang, hehe.
-
klotz cable with neutrik jacks and those little peavey cables for my stomps :)
-
ako instrument cable for guitars and patch cables ..basta pang instrument..
meron sa audiophile, both instrument/microphone cables.. magandang klase medyo may kamahalan nga lang. pero its an investment too, i often see musicians having problems with cable and they dont even know it. they put the blame on other things (amp..etc..)
-
klotz cables (guitar-pedals/pedals-amp)
peavey patch cables (in between stomps)
-
oh, kung sa AP, maybe that's the one i already have. when i want a gtr cable i just ask which ones are for gtr and test them for flexibility and ease of use, i don't even bother to look at the brand. i always compensate the eq at the amp naman e. :-)
-
it's either a klotz or a nobelle..
ok din naman daw ang nobelle..
-
ako gusto kong mag-DIY, pero gusto ko mamahalin, hahaha. i want to buy neutrik plugs and a good mic cable. mahal ata ang klotz eh no? so baka neutrik narin, hehe. na-eexcite ako sa thought ng pag-solder, hehehe. wala lang, hehe. childhood dream, hahaha.
i'm still a newbie pero masarap mag DIY and learn in the process. i always try to figure it out and do it myself, whether electronics, setup, etc...; pag di kaya or may mali, andyan naman si arie or lito.
minsan nasira yung hair straightening iron ng mrs ko. i fixed it w/ a simple resoldering of the contacts in 5mins. kaya ngayon she never takes it against me if i spend lotsa time making butinting w/ electronics in my gtr or amp. ;-)
-
@kuls, ang ginagamit mo bang pang solder eh yung parang ballpen-type? yung malinggit lang?
ballpen-type. yung normal electrician pang-hinang, hehe.
if that's the 15-20 watt variety, baka mabitin ka dyan. ok yan for pcbs. pero for ptp wiring inside guitars and amps, get a 40watt iron too.
-
ako i use rat guitar cables.. i bought three mga 7 years ago.. okei parin sila.. havent tried planet waves though.. but i plan on getting one(or two) sometime soon. :)
-
Klotz with neutrik
-
this may sound dumb, but yung ginagamit ba ninyong cables are microphone cables or instrument cables? kasi yung mga ibang pre-made cables eh Klotz microphone cables with Neutrik plugs. instrument cables kasi ginagamit ko e, i haven't tried using microphone cables to connect my guitar to my pboard in/amp in. ano difference ng signal quality pag microphone cables ang ginamit sa guitar? meron kasi sa Electronics Depot ng Quantum mic cable.. maganda yung construction nya, shielded and everything but of course, i want to ask the people here first before actually buying.
yo men meron ako dito mga mic cable gusto mo testingin? hehe. brand is SoundTech USA.
isa lang masasabi ko. literal. MICROPHONIC. yung pag gumalaw cya sa floor, it makes a sound through the amp, pag tinapakan mo yung cable, tumutunog din. and 2m lang yung cable na yun ha.
this is true pag gamit mo cya from guitar to amp/pedals. if you put it behind a buffered device (such as a pedal na walang true bypass), the microphonic characteristic disappears.
construction is super rugged though. mas matibay to kesa kay Klotz LaGrange ko. shielding is ok, low noise. pero yun lang, puro tibay lang cya.
-
come to think of it..before i joined this forum, i didnt care much about the brand of my cable.... when i was still gigging, i just use whatever cable i can pickup in a shop as long as maganda yung shielding at matibay, mura and gumagana...
bad influence itong forum na to haha. now im using planet waves ..although, i still believe - the player, the guitar, the effects and the amp - they still play the biggest and most important factor in a guitar player's rig.
-
Klotz La Grange!!!
-
good old fender vintage series cables for mortals like me 8)
-
anyway, thanks for making a believer out of me *hikbi*. pupundar na co from now on for a klotz+neutrik from audiophile.
-
umm as of now dimarzios
-
GEORGE L'S...i love high end! hehe..
-
As for me, I have Dimarzio cables, 5 years na. Not so good. I have a JB Music Mart of the same age and ultra thin and it still works. What gives?
For now, since I work in SF, I can only enjoy the Cable Car.
-
generic cables from the Phasetron audio shop, have an ernie ball cable that i chop-chopped and used end jacks from Ace hardware. lazer patch cables.

mahal ata yung vintage voltage pre but it looks really fat and tough,

No matter how much I try to convince myself that cables are cables, my Two Rock really sounds way way better than my Klotz. I have been playing on the Klotz the past few days and the difference is NOT just EQ as some would like you to believe. Personally, I think the Klotz sounds better and reacts better than George L's but what I am reading on this thread really does not comply with my reality. The Two Rock sounds fuller as if more notes and more signal are hitting the amp. It just sounds richer not just more frequencies. Also, the notes are clearer and the attack is so bell like not trebly harsh. If you guys still think that there is a threshold on cables, I am saying based on my experience of one month with Two Rock it is really setting the baseline for me. And I can say this because I own the cable and you guys cannot say anything negative against it until your try it for a month versus your current cable.
sir san kayo nakakuha nung two rock? :) compare ko sana... :) t.i.a
-
im planning to get proel....
ano po tingin nyo? ok po ba ito (transaparency...hum)? is it good for the price?

i have to agree....top of the line( read pricey)cables( or gear for that matter) makes the licks of the talented guitarist shine through.
and if you dont have talent( read--your playing stinks) mas lalo mabubuking ang kapalpakan mo( read---if your playing is [gooey brown stuff], it will stink even more)
and oas gomez is a living testament of that.at least his [gooey brown stuff] is worth$$$

Audio Technica Cables 5 meters! HINGI KO LANG AHEHEHE!
astig
and another 5meters that i made, HARDCORE! P100
may patch cable pala sa LAZER...ok poh ba yun?
-
i have planet waves ska fender california series na cable. mas ok sa akin yung fender. tahimik. works for me. :D
-
Monster and Mogami for guitars and bass, George L's for my pedal board
-
DIY cables! Deeco's P25/m cable yng red(don't know the brand..hehehe) at end jacksMIJ.....then voila!!!
-
Peavey 20' instrument cable - for regular gigs
Neutrik 5' instrument cable - interconnect to signal processors and/or D.I.
Klotz instrument cable - for special gigs
-
before i was using regular cables kasi akala ko cable is cable at alang difference then i tried MONSTER.. there was a BIG difference sa sound mas full yung sound saka clearer.. then sabi ko subukan ko nga yung MOGAMI.. mas QUIET yung MOGAMI kesa sa MONSTER with the same fullness saka clarity.. now i use ONLY MOGAMI cables sa LAHAT ng connections sa guitars/basses/kybrds/drum modules at DAW... 8)
ps
well its just me, kapag me narinig akong difference i go for it and buy it.
saka me LIFETIME warranty pa yun.
you can also make your own ..just buy NEGLEX cables 2534 para sa balanced connections / mics... at NEGLEX 2524 sa instrument connections sa guitars at bass and use Neutrik plugs ( gold tip).. yun ang ginagamit ng MOGAMI 8)
-
monster, george l's, some quantums (are really good too)
-
buhayin natin ang thread... eheh
may mga neutrik plug ends ba nabibili sa raon or exclusive to sa audiophile? what is a good substitute for neutrik plugs? peaveys or the generic gold plated ones??
DIY boy din ako eheh
-
where do you guys buy your cables?
-
naintriga ako sa mogami ah ehheheh
i use a monster cable for my guitar and lazer patch cables for my pedal board.....san nakakakabili ng mogami na cables?? sana mas mura sha kesa sa monster cable ehehe.... ano magandang patch cables?? ung tipong alang noise tapos clear na clear ung sound tapos affordable or okay na ung lazer na patch cables?
-
Based on my experience I guess high impedence microphone cables and instrument cables are just the same. I've been using a DIY microphone cable for my guitars. I've been using it for a long time na pro dati ordinary micropone cables lang pro now i use a quatum cable na. Mas ok kasi yung quantum walang noise saka matibay. I use quantum plugs din. Ok naman. I'm not sure about this but I find mic and instru. cables made with the same materials and done in the same manner. I guess they were just labeled differently but the quality and purpose were just the same. I can't find any difference with both cable unless if the mic cable is a low impedence cable kasi iba talaga siya kasi its intended for professional microphones.

-
Ayofish..magandang patch cables?
-
Yeah, Zaolla. part of my GAS next year :D
-
Boosted,
Unfortunately, Two Rock cables are not available in Manila. They are also hard to find in the U.S. I got mine from Indoor Storm in North Carolina.
-
1 Ernie Ball cable pag me gig and 1 Made in China cable pag praktis lang, heheheh :D
-

I was looking at Tara Labs cable, syet! May Kaso pala mga hung-hang na un, that they are outsourcing manufacturing overseas at nde made in US. Actually nde naman issue sa akin kung US made or nde, but the fact na nagsisinungaling company e iba na un :x

PlanetWaves circuit breaker/Monster Cables. :-D

probably coz klotz suck (i have 3 though but i notice na its darker voiced than regular cables). George L's and planet waves for me.
But for the sake of ease of setup breakdown.. I am downgrading my cables to a cabling solution (parang IT ha). I just got a pedal snake and it should be here end of the month. Ill even run my amp switching and power thru it. 1 Cable to rule them all. WATTA DORK. lol

I use the 25 peso L-type heavy duty plugs from raon. 100 peso ready made cables from DIY Shop(Robinson's mall edsa). Since mahirap maghanap nung cable mismo, pinutol ko na lang yun mga dulo ng galing sa DIY shop. so far, maayos naman. used it for recording, and live. I use them for patch cables and main guitar cables. cheap and effective.

regarding two-rock crystal clear cables..
Utilizing a dual 100% oxygen free solid copper signal conductor and floating shield, our cables offer extreme clarity and dynamics with minimal signal loss or degradation. Non-microphonic and noise-free, these cables are great for live or studio use
Two-Rock cable derives its sound first from superior components: the finest Neutrik connectors [which are very sturdy, look great, and sound slightly better than the switchcraft equivalent], 2 conductors of specially treated 18ga oxygen-free solid-core copper, and a Teflon jacket. This is combined in a design that utilizes a floating shield, which aids in passing the signal quietly, with the most volume and accuracy ever offered....
Cables
10' Inst. Cable $149.00
12' Inst. Cable $169.00
15' Inst. Cable $199.00
6' Spkr Cable $69.00

Hi there... where do you buy these plugs/connectors? I mean where in Raon? Deeco's? have tried the Deeco's store in Ever Commonwealth, pero wala dun.... Plan to make patch cables using Klotz cable and those connectors.... although i already have Neutriks, i think these will be a better alternative not just because of the price but also because the L-Type of plugs are much flatter (if we are talking about the same plugs)...

-
tunog picks yan maks ah, hehe.
ako i use 2 sets, 2 pieces of klotz la grange with neutrik plugs (2 meters each) and 2 pieces of fender california cables (18 feet each)
i admit medyo hindi ganon kaganda yung california cables, nabawasan ng shimmer yung tone ng gitara ko. i plan to make 2 more klotz cables, this time longer, mga 4 meters, hehe. bitin ako sa 2 meters pala, hehe.
-

Tulad nyang Tara Labs Cable, na-raid ung pagawaan nila ng authorities kasi they label their products as Made in USA pero lumalabas sa investigation outsourcing sila outside US... :|

I'm ditching my Canares for:
Evidence Audio
The Lyric HG to pedalboard, pedalboard to amp
The Melody for pedalboard
The Siren for combo speakers and extension cabinet.
Just waiting on pedalboard/combo speaker cables. I tried The Lyric HG and the Siren speaker cable for my extension cab. The difference is noticeable. Very balanced. No harsh distortion frequencies. The slightest picking attack triggers my BOSS FT-2 now! Surprised especially with The Siren.
Believe the hype.
Only downside: i suck more clearly now :|

Planet Waves and darn anything that works. The cables are the least of my worries.

anyone tried those new cables in audiophile yet? tourtek ata ung name? just P450 for 20 feet and already with neutrik plugs! :-o

If you're a musician or sound engineer, you need a multitude of tools to do your job. That's why Samson offers audio gear and accessories that satisfy such a wide range of needs. Tourtek Instrument Cables expand Samson's successful accessory line with reliable, professional grade cables offering incredible sound quality.
Tourtek Instrument Cables are constructed of genuine Neutrik® 1/4-inch connectors and durable low-noise wire with solid build construction. Because musicians and sound engineers need cables with extremely low handling noise, superior sound quality and excellent rejection of RFI/EMI interference, Samson has designed these cables with a PVC-covered stranded copper conductor which is wrapped in a second carbon insulator, enclosed in a braided copper shield with 96% coverage, then protected by a durable 6mm PVC outer jacket.
Tourtek Microphone Cables are constructed of genuine Neutrik® XLR connectors and two 25-gauge multi-strand inner conductors. Because musicians and sound engineers need cables with low capacitance, superior sound quality and excellent rejection of RFI/EMI interference, Samson has secured these cables in a braided copper shield with 96% coverage, then protected them with a durable 7mm PVC outer jacket.
Tourtek Speaker Cables are constructed of genuine Neutrik® Speakon™ and 1/4-inch connectors as well as heavy-duty 14-gauge copper wire insulated with a durable 8mm PVC outer jacket.
yea that's the one! so the question is are these specs good enough??

Ordinary instrument cables are noisy when dragged around or dropped on the floor because of their microphonic characteristics. Tourtek instrument cables are quiet because they have a second layer carbon fiber insulator over the PVC insulator covering the inner wires.

Ako,
1.) For big gig and recording:
Fender California Cable Lake Placid Blue for my guitar and D.I.Y. Quantum Cables and Quantum Plugs for my patch cable and effects to amps.
2.) For not so big gig:
All D.I.Y. Quantum cable with quantum plugs.
3.) Practice and small gig:
Ordinary Cable for my guitar and effects to amps. D.I.Y. Quantum cable with quantum plugs for patch.
First setup is my favorite. Great tone, Clean sound and low noise. Second setup. Clean sound and low noise. Third setup ok lang siya medyo may konting noise pro tolerable pa man. Not really as great as 1st and 2nd setup pro it gets the job done kahit papano. hehehehe.

Ako a pair of Klotz, a pair of custom ones from Audiophile (nice cable + Neutriks), and vjoe recently bought for me a pair of Planet Waves circuitbreaker cables.
Kung praktis lang around the house (w/ kalat and kids all over the place), nothing beats it.

i had my bassist A/B my two vibro-kings. one was stock. the other was rewired with evidence audio speaker cables going to all three 10s.
he played the stock VK with a strat using a canare cable. sounded good. on about 4 had some crunch (VKs break up at about 3.5), kinda bright. emphasis on some harsh frequencies.
he then played the VK with the evidence audio speaker cables using the evidence audio lyric hg guitar cable.
he was blown away.
at about 4 (same settings as stock VK across the board), it didn't have the harsh crunch or piercing bright tone. not only was it considerably cleaner and louder, but it had balls. the 10s put out so much more bass. volume and headroom are no longer an issue. the sound was full and balanced. i don't think i need the 212 extension cab anymore! it made me love my amp even more!
even the keyboardist was blown away at the night and day difference!

More specs...
Shielding
Tourtek cables use double screen shielding - braided screen and additional conductive plastic screen (anti-static tube) to prevent cable "crackle" when handling. This shielding rejects interference at high frequencies.
Cable Capacitance
Tourtek has very low capacitance (<100pf/m) preventing signal to leak from core to screen so high frequencies don't roll off when using high impedance instruments.
Copper Conductors
Tourtek has very low resistance (0.09 ohms/m) that reduces damping, large gauge for reliable connections, are oxygen-free for improved conductivity, and multiple strands to reduce skin effect and improve high frequency response.
-
ok so i just bought a 20 foot tourtek cable :-D no obvious difference yet but i like the angled plugs. less stress on the cable when attached, at an otherwise precarious angle, to my amp
-
generic cables :-o
-
Ako yung black na medyo may kahabaan naman.
question narin mga sir: Does it really matter?
-
Klotz cables.
-
Chinese Neutrik yung plugs! :-o Ning Bo Neutrik nakalagay. :x Walang "Made in Liechtenstein." :-D
-
Tourteks are good. Frequency response is very good. I've A/B'd them with my other cables and they come out quite well. With their affordable cost, they're tops. I use the shorty 10 footers (less resistance and capacitance), going to the effects pedal board then to amp.
FWIW

ok newsflash on the samson tourtek cable! i just bought a 20 footer and had it for less than a month now but im already having problems with it. it loses signal from time to time then i have to nudge it to get it working again. didn't even gig it or anything, it just sits beside my amp.
-
Just got a 15footer Planet Waves cable this week. Man i cant believe my ears. It does make a HUGE difference. I notice my tele sounds more trebly (more presence) and much clearer i had to back off the treble from my amp a bit. Cool! Cant wait to buy another set for my effects-to-amp cable.

that's really weird! try it with other guitar/bass rigs and check if you still experience the same problem...

Whirlwind's really great. Meron kaming ganito kahit palaging naaapakan at ilang beses na akong natisod dito, ayos pa rin. 8-) Hirap lang siguro pag hardwood yung plugs pag nabagsak baka magkabungi-bungi.

my nakatry na ba ng SWAN cables dito?

Rockstar long and patch cables :-D :-D
-
For my set-up and requirement for my expressive guitars to shine thru, I really need Van den Hul and Two Rock. Anything lower for me just depresses my sound into the realm of mush and lack of character. I see myself heading upward for cables because they do have an effect on guitar response. If you cannot hear than happening much, stay happy and forget about cables. Sometimes its better not to know what you are missing than having to realize you can't go back to your previous sound because you cannot stand it anymore.

aram telephone cable from jb and lazer from raon.... ung patch cable di ko lam brand pero mukang reliable naman cuz it costs Php150... papatayin ko nagbenta nun pag bumigay ng maaga...

OT lang mga sir.
ganon po ba talaga if solder less ang cables? When touching the pin joints of the cable while plugged on the amp. there is a 'crackle sound' or when im playing pagnagagalaw ung cable. nagproduce ng crackle na sound. if not, what could be the possible issues ng cable ko?
btw, I use 2 George Ls cable. George L's Guitar Cable .155 (to be more specific) both 10 ft.
thanks.

For any cable, be it soldered or solderless, normal na may buzz sound pag hinahawakan yung tip ng cable habang naka plug sa amp.
:-)

Hi everyone. What instrument cable you think the best for you can you recommend me under a thousand pesos?
Sandali lang you get all sorts of buzz and noise.

May Klotz pa ba sa Audiophile?

^^Cable porn!!
Maiba lang, and not to rain on anyone's parade.. but is there anyone else NOT spending a lot on cables? On my end, basta hindi noisy. Pinaka-splurge ko na yung quantum cables and amphenol plugs, but usually it's just 'what works'. I still even have that Lazer cable that started its life 20ft.
I realize I must tread lightly here... :-D You folks have good gear, and I don't mind using some of that. I actually heard the difference when someone brought over some lava soar for me to try out. But I wonder if anyone else is a cable hermit.

Me.

Me too, I haven't spent on cables since getting a Monster studio pro and George L's for my board 5 years ago

Hehe.
Although I use Lava-assembled Gepco and Canare cables just because I got them cheap. Hehe.
May nakita akong Klotz sa Yupangco dati. Sila na ba dealer? Sana nakakabili pa rin ng tingi.

Yes bro. Sila na ang may hawak ng Klotz.

Yes bro. Sila na ang may hawak ng Klotz.
+1. not sure if they offer tingi like AP did before.

Currently, DiMarzios and Quantum (patch cables). Gassing for the Lavas though.
Saang guitar shop nakakabili ng Dimarzio or Quantum patch cables Sir?.

I realize I must tread lightly here... :-D You folks have good gear, and I don't mind using some of that. I actually heard the difference when someone brought over some lava soar for me to try out. But I wonder if anyone else is a cable hermit.
 Bro siore. Present! Haha.
Been using DIY cables for years now. I don't see the need for a cable that costs a pedal already. On patch cables, I'm using DIY's with pancake plugs. Half of which a forumite here made, the other half I assembled from parts I bought off of deeco Raon. What works, works.. that's me.
And oh I still have that red Surelock braided cable that my sister gave as a christmas gift 3 years ago. That's about it.
:-D

Akin China made na cable.. hehehe ... But I'm planning to buy a mogami gold when I get to Beijing next week .... Sana meron...

did you actually try one out? Neutrik plugs are sturdy and reliable. but AFAIK, wala naman effect ang plugs sa tonal quality ng cable.

Not being a cork bro, pero meron.. Tried both Neutrik and GH plugs on a LAVA cable and I did notice a difference.. very audible, honestly.

Fendor cables and Laba cables lol
Thanks... :-)

Mas mura yung Lava Soar kit (soldered) kesa LAVA Mini ELC kit (solderless).

Audiophile.
Really? Nakuha ng Audiophile ang Lava? :-o :-o :-o
-
ah ok. you assembled the cables, right? baka nasa pag-assemble lang? soldering lead used? :-D
Might be.. pero I use the same soldering lead that I have been always using.. Mas dull yung Neutrik, parang mas naging open dun sa GH (gold shaft and tip)..

Or maybe some Evidence Audio in bulk.

Guys - would you know gano kalaki difference between a 1.5k cable like Klotz or Monster vs. a 3k+ cable like lava? And may mas mahal pa ba?

difference in tone ba, Mark? curious din ako, kasi hindi pa ako naka-A/B ng Klotz or Monster na nasa 1.5k range vs. 3k Lavas.
marami pang mas mahal na brands - Zaolla Silverline, Vovox, Evidence Audio to name some. :)

Saturn/Return (Rob) sold Belden patch cables a while back. I currently have them in my board, and have no plans of replacing it with Lavas in the meantime. Sounds pretty decent naman. For my main cables naman, I use Xotic.

It must be noted that maraming models din yung Lava, so referring to it simply as "Lava" may be confusing. Kahit within their line kasi, iba iba rin sila. :)
If anything, Monster isn't exactly a respected company sa audio circles.. kilala sila for overpricing things of middling quality tapos dinadaan lang sa marketing. Just look at Beats. haha
Pricing isn't that bad din.

Then you might as well check for the Lava kit at Audiophile or kay Turi. Maliit lang kasi ang Sound Essentials kaya siguro people are more forgiving, pero isa pa yang grabe ang mark up ng prices. I'm not sure why, and it's a shame.
On the other hand, kung maiikling patch cables rin lang naman, I wouldn't mind buying those self branded cheap ones at Lazer -- yun lang, it might be best to resolder the contacts. I also swear by those cheap Peavey patch cables -- mukhang pipitsugin pero ang tibay.
-
I use lava clear connects from my guitar --> board and board --> amp.
I use George L's naman for my patch cables. :)
Btw, may 10% discount sa sound essentials for church musicians haha wala lang

I wish I have george L's, but I can't afford that kind of price.
Now I put my whole trust to drahcirnna24, made an awesome patch cable for a budget price. :-D Ordering a Y-splitter from him for my DD7 and DD5 to sync into 1 tap tempo. :)

mine is Cordial cables made in Germany with neutrik silent ... :) the best at mura 6m for P1,800

You can buy cable-only from Turi. So pwede ka mag lava na mini ELC cable, tapos i solder mo na lang sa ibang jack like neutrik. When I used Lava, mas lumitaw yung tunog ng guitar ko. Well ganun din naman george Ls. For instrument cables, mas reliable ang lava kasi soldered. Pero mas maganda sya tingnan and mas mapapag dikit mo yung mga pedals with each other.
@Kurthseth - nag lava patch ka na pala! Nice!

As my point-to-point Patch Cable and Loop, Planning o get LAVA RetroCoil for my guitar.

wanted George L cables but settled with Planet Waves American Stage Cables. Nice improvement over my Fender Vintage Voltage which I like for its punchiness. I noticed how my Ash Strat sounded like with more high end passing through. Madali pa itago while being robust enough. + 1000 for the patented tip which fits every input jack.
sana may magpahiram ng George L so I can A-B against each other.

will try to make my own cables :D

have you guys heard of Nobelle cables and ProCo cables? meron na bang nakagamit dito?
tsaka yung brand ng jacks na Amphenol? :)

Yup, mas bassy sya at mas ma mids yung highs nya neutral lang... didnt expect it coming from a cable.. for years i use Planet Waves cables and i thought it was fine till i use that cable..

reviving a pretty old thread..
i need to buy new cables, two new cables. i need something thats kinda above average sounding, not too bassy, robust and will not break my pocket. my budget would be 3k for two 10 feet cables.. okay i can stretch it to 4k.
advice from cable gods out there, i need it. :)

I'm no cable god but I've had pleasant results with the LAVA Clear Connect, but moreso with the LAVA ELC (parang soldered version ng clear connect).
I have a 12ft LAVA ELC, that's about 2,500php from Audiophile. If they have the 10ft version, then that'd be cheaper but I don't know the exact price. It might fit your 4k budget. :-)

thats a good one, never thought i'd get a lava, even the entry level lavas haha.
are the non-soldered versions hmm... easier to be mess up? i havent tried it kasi.
besides lava, are there other alternatives? like 1.5k a piece? im not a tone freak kind of guy but i'd like to buy decent ones that would more or less do well..
EDIT:
there are lava magmas and blue demons on audiophile, and priced 1200 and 1450, which are pretty cheap!
-
Try Bullet cables, yun unsoldered ones. Compared it with a generic cable, mas clear at mas malakas volume output. Lazer music stores distribute them.
-

Haha. I know there are cheaper LAVAs (magma, Blue Demon, etc) but I have not tested them yet and have no idea about their "tone". Dimarzio braided cables will also fit your budget for 1500 per cable but you'll seriously hear the difference when you A/B it against an ELC. Biglang parang dull sounding yung Dimarzio. Pero matibay siya, for what it's worth. :-)
I always feel safer with soldered cables. I've already replaced one plug of my Clear Connect with a soldered GH (same as the ELC) plug.
May patch (kit) din ba sila na lava? how much?
They have the SOAR kit (soldered). Got mine for 2,200 afaik.

ok from work i drove to moa and got 1 blue demon cable. its a huge leap from the vintage voltage haha. 1,550 pesos, soldered siya. a decent cable, though i havent tried those soars. saved 700 pesos and im just happy i have a new working cable.

Hahahaha! Good choice. :-) I personally never liked the SOAR. Too stiff. Pwede mo isandal sa pader nang nakatayo. ELC might be the farthest (and most practical) I'll go for a good cable with a nice signal transfer. I do think the ELC has more "sparkle" than the SOAR based on experience.

the ELC i saw was like 2,600? which is 1,100 more haha. and honestly, im not a cable tone freak, i just need a decent working cable. this blue demon seems sturdy.. ill know when i get to use it more.
thanks for your lava suggestion!

Been using regular cables for 15 yrs, then suddenly I saw philmusic, napa gastos tuloy ako
Since the "epiphany", I've used the following:
- Lava soar
- Lava blue demon
- George L regular nickel
- Geroge L masters
- Lava mini ELC patch kit
- George L patch kit
- Mogami patch cables w/ soldered pancake plugs
So far this is my conclusion on cables: You will hear the difference if you listen to it and look for the difference. If you just rock your heart out, there's not much difference :-) I still use my tourtek and dimarzio cables from time to time, wala naman dramatic difference. On patch cables naman, this is where the huge difference is if madami pedals. So invest more in a good patch cable, then get a decent guitar cable. Siguro buy the premium guitar cables if 20ft na yung length.
Among the cables above, my favorite is the blue demon. Sounds decent, madali i-ligpit, reliable, and very rugged, and mura pa.
Fast assembly, no signal loss, and reliable. Tanggal-kabit ako ng pedals sa board, never bumigay sakin. Mogami is okay, pero pancake plugs looks so-so, hehe. In general, not much difference between Lava, George L and Mogami. Tone suck is minimized, and that's what matters. Lamang lang ang george L sa ease of assembly, as in super dali. Reliable pa.
-
I tend to not use expensive cables because I'm sure to damage them at shows. Used to use Fender cables before and after my pedalboard, now I use Corts since they sound better than those vintage voltage cables and are less prone to breakage. I've literally dragged my guitar across the stage by pulling on the Cort and it works perfectly well to this day. I do this fairly regularly so I know they're durable.
-
Wow almost 6 years now for this thread :)
I now use Lava Cable and Lava solder-free plugs for my pedals, George L from pedalboard to amp and Line 6 Relay G30 from guitar to pedalboard.
-
Not also fan of luxury cables, cable tone freak, or cable function whatever. a good working standard cable for me is enough, thus, DIY cables ang gamit ko. Using professional, low noise, flexible, really goodquality cables soldered to good quality plugs... may control pa ako sa tibay  I'm using mine for I think 7 months na. okay na okay pa rin, plus I spent less than 500, FOR TWO LONG STURDY NICELY MADE CABLES. (suki eh :-D (my business before))
But! given that I have the money, I think I'd also try buy those expensive cables, I mean they have good reviews eh, why not?
btw... newbie question. Aside from noise cancelling, louder signal/output, and durability... are there any other special function/offer it serves?

Franzdean,
"TONE"
wether we like it or not. Good cables(which mostly are expensive ones), has better conductor properties(how pure the conductor copper are inside), insulation shielding and proper spacing of the cladding. Hindi ito karaniwan alam ng players but essentially this are the technical means on why this cable sounds better than this. Higher specs means higher value/cost.
Imo not all DIY cables today are suspectible for these requirements.
Therefore not because it works its ok right? Unless you tried a really good cable.
I myself DIY my cables. But I choose what materials to use. MoGAMi is one.
-
I have been using my Clear Connects for about 4 to 5 years na ata. Or maybe 3. Works really well snd a big jump from normal cables. I recently bought DiMarzios though. I like the darker tone of them. Fir me these cables would suffice.
-
mogami...the best......... >:D

hmm good pointers, well I don't just buy a normal professional cable from raon, higher specs means higher value costs, kaya yung iba mas sobrang mahal talaga ang per meter. Anyway I think I should look forward on better cable for DIYs, hehe. Kasi better plugs pa lang ang nainvest ko for the DIY. (neutrik, original, ordered) as of the cable, I ask the guy where I buy electronic stuff. Naging tropa na, and he knows which cable is good, which is not. :))))) Actually di ko na rin maintindihan yung technical terms na sinasabi nya basta I just ask him to give me a good cable to use. plus he's giving me a good price :D

Wont hurt a bit right? its a big leap like the others here said. Try AudioPhile they got a bunch of good cables there.
-
To add, expensive patch cables like George L offers convenience, super bilis ikabit (like 10 sec per connector) and matibay sya. For guitar cables though, I'd go for soldered like lava blue demon - hindi sya kamahalan (I think 1,200 lang), pero matibay na, maganda pa ang tunog.

Yong Planet Waves na may circuit breaker, maganda at matibay kaya yon? di ba sirain ang circuit breaker?

Get the cheap Lava Magma Cable. And bombard it with shrink tubing from end to end (not the shafts of course) if that breaks, there's definitely something wrong with who's using it.

Brighter than the Dimarzio Braided cables, iirc. :) Natitibayan ako sa kanila. Had some since 2007 or 2008.. gamit ko pa rin hanggang ngayon alongside my LAVA cables. :)

same experience with the Tourteks, got mine in 2007, only started having problems in 2011 due to frequent use.

I've used Bullet pedal board kit. Maganda shielding and construction same as others construction, sound quality for me is fair enough not too bright but decently has some low end guality naman. But the problem sobrang tigas nila hahaha kapag nasa pedal board mo siya for a 4" patch yung bend niya sobrang bilog sa tigas hahaha. Not recommended sa malalaking board. Parang pat-pat sa tigas.
Anyway me and sir kevin ordered bullet coily cable 30". malalaman natin. And in the future lava coily naman.
IMO, lava is purely made in USA and Bullet is china(not all maybe).

Just recently tested three cables:
- Lava Magma
- Lava Blue Demon
- George L's Master's series cable
all 10 ft
Verdict: Increasing treble content for the 3. Geroge L master's has the most treble content, no tone suck. Blue demon comes next, balanced sound, while magma comes last. Well, you get what you pay for. I'm guessing soar and ultramafic is in the realm of the George L master's or even better.

Yung churchmate ko gamit nya strandtz cable(tama ba spell) with amphenol plugs...Anybody using this?May nabasa kasi akong reviews na yung strandtz cable eh may issue na nagshi-shrink daw yung outer rubber insulator covering pagtagal...Ang ganda pa naman gamitin neto, loose sya at hindi mahirap ilatag...Hindi rin matigas.
Any reviews about this?

just got two lava cables last month by Rattler Audio. Both ELC. one from amp to the board, and another from the board to the guitar.
ubos pera.

Magkano yan Bert?

This one bro.
As my point-to-point Patch Cable and Loop, Planning o get LAVA RetroCoil for my guitar.
I decided to build na lang which is more practical in my part, since it has the same
specs as others, and sounds fine after testing 10 ft. Then decided to use it
as my patch. Way cheaper yet same quality.
anong mogami yung gamit niyo sir ? silver, gold or platinum ?

LAVA ELC for my instrument cables and Dimarzio overbraid for my patch cables.. :-)
Hi bro! How's Dimarzio patch cables compared to your Lava patches?
-
How's Dimarzio patch cables compared to your Lava patches?
Yes bro. Kasabay nung S-Amp last saturday. :-)
Would have bought another SOAR kita kaso masyadong space consuming ang size ng GH plugs na angled..
Smallest reliable I found was the Dimarzio overbraid. Kinda pricey, for the 6pcs (napasobra ako ng bili), para na rin akong nag solderless LAVA mini ELC.. pero yun nga, habol ko yung reliability..

Magkano yan Bert?

Canare L2t2s japan cables & Neutrik plugs all the way.

Kung may pedal GAS ako, Bogner Ecstasy Blue at Red yun.. Eh may Blue na si cayle, makikiplug nalang ako.. :-D
-
Soooo, what pre-made patch cable brands do you guys recommend?
-
-
Using a POD kaya tipid sa cables. Using Lava ELC cable though. Hehe.

I have patch cables made by him, 3 years na ngaoyn and still working. Also, I get all my custom cables for pro-audio from him, from balance cables to splitters, etc....
What can I say, this man is highly recommended... try mo bro

Follow up question. Can his custom patch cables compete with the likes of Lava ELC or George L's in terms of tone/sound quality and price range?
-
For instrument leads, I buy Neutrik connectors and Sommer cables then solder them :)
I keep my cables 10-13 feet long and make sure that the capacitance is as low as it can get, I stay away from anything more than 25-30pF/ft.
I also make sure that it is well shielded, and the outer jacket is flexible and tangle free.
Also, the conductor needs to be copper.
These are my personal preferences.

saan nyo po nabili yung Neutrik connector nyo at magkano po?
-
My Brother just gave me a Monster Rock Cable 12ft, pasalubong nya from US...
Now I use GeorgeL (thanks to my GF (im in a band so what do you expect :) )) from guitar to effects yung GeorgeL tas Monster from effects to Amp... Napansin ko lang nung nag GoergeL ako na mas litaw lang yung mga attack ng picking ko or mas punchy i should say..

RockCables... :-D

Bought a pair of his guitar cables.
Noiseless and feels durable! Got more than my money's worth as far as I'm concerned. 1k for a pair :-D
Thank you for recommending!

i use the tweed lava cables, so far so good. im gonna have to learn to solder my own sooner or later tho. >:D
-
sound essentials just opened a branch in davao, and i saw the george L's ...
just wondering: i love the george L's cause they are thin and small, and looks easy to coil (compared to my planet waves ones now) ... how do they compare to Lava Blue Demon? i have never seen or felt the lava ... are they as easy to coil and store as the george L's?
the only thing that is keeping me from committing to George L's is because its not soldered and might get pulled out in a gig
-
Bullet coily cables because they are so funky.
Lava cables because they are so cheap in HK when I went there.
George L's patch cables because they look great.
-
Lava Clear
Lava Magma
Lava Vintage
Lava Right & Straight Plug patch cables
-
I've had several George L's (4 or 5 I think). They're very well made. I have not experienced one failing on me during gigs.

i guess i am getting one later! ...
i am beginning to hate those planet waves circuit breaker things. my set up is complicated with a big pedalboard, plus i bring my own amp ... and sometimes i do not know the mute switch is engaged on the cable, so i check my pedals, the amp, and the patch cables.
it gets confusing when there are 2 problems happening at once; loose patch cable + mute switch engaged on the planet waves cable. such a headache, especially since the mute on the cable can get triggered accidentally
i do not recommend Planet Waves with a circuit breaker for anyone who has more than 4 pedals.
-
Mogami with Neutrik
-
just bought 2x20ft Carson rocklines. They are reliable and that's the only thing I'm after. I have not compared any cable in terms of sound. I bet I would still sound like myself lol
-
Yung dalawa kong kable parehong assemble. Yung nauna, brown cable yun. So far wala pa naman akong naging problema.
Yung sumunod, kakabuo lang last week. Wala rin akong problema.
May dis-advantage ba kapag home-made ang kable?
Or should I say, anong advantage ng commercial cables over home-made cables?
-
10 feet of George L's,
Lava angled patch cables. (wasted a foot on the assembly, but was able to do it correctly)
-
Nobelle!!

no name generics before...
since last year, Planet Waves
;)

Klotz! Guitar cable and patch cable

We use Strandtz cables from www.channel.com.ph. Usually with Neutrik, Amphenol, Lequn or Quantum connectors.

Kailangan ko pa ng kapares hehe
-
One time when I went to Japan with my family, I was able to score a pair of Amphenol connectors, a pair of Neutriks - one straight and one angled, and 5 meters of Mogami cable (in hindsight, I should've gotten more). I built a cable using the Neutriks and the Mogami, and am now using it as my main instrument cable. It rocks :-)
I plan to get myself a Klotz cable for the pliability of the insulation (I hate having tangles on my wires) and, if ever the connectors fail, I'll finally have the chance to use the Amphenols I have been saving :-D
-
intrument cables - i use monster and lava.
patch cables - i use dimarzio and strukture.
-
-
So yung flow of sounds o signal, nasa cable talaga kesa sa plug nuh? Anyway thanks sir...
-
Lava Clear Connect IIs and EA Monorail patch cables. :)
-
Fender Performance cable.
Saan makakabili ng neutrik plugs?

Neutrik is a good brand, and the plug length is small compared to the cable length so you may not notice the difference.
-
I'm using Nobelle (MIJ) cable with some cheapo Chinese plugs. Works well for now. :-D
-
All my cables are Klotz including patch cable. You can really distiguish the clarity of the sound
-
cant live without my vovox
-
My most reliable guitar cable is from klotz. I have been using it since 2007 and it surpassed all my similarly priced cables. It is very light and flexible, but for some reason it doesn't break. I also have a klotz mic cable bought on the same year which already has plenty of curls, but still working until I can no longer find it recently.
-
I have a Bullet coily cable from guitar to pedals, which I like because it is easy to manage without the tangles. Seems durable. Looks cool too.
From pedals to amp, I got a Lava 10' Magma. George L's for patch cables.
No big tone change since upgrades as far as my ears can tell.
-

You mean you can actually hear the difference in sound between 6" patch cables?

When you have at least 4 pedals (true bypass), yes, rinig yung difference between Lava (3pcs 6" mini soar) and Dimarzio (3pcs 6" braided), based from my experience.

i agree very much with this one. may difference between my Lava, DiMarzio, and Asterope.
-

Yup! Directional cables.Yung Planet Waves, may arrows sa plugs telling you which direction the cable must go para maximized yung toanz. Kahit Lava cables sinasabi na directional yung cables nila.
Lava and Dimarzio cables pa rin ako. Lava ELC and Dimarzio patch cables, although i'm planning to order Lava patch cables kasi mahirap itwist yung Dimarzio patch cables. :)
-
-

Electrons travel very fast, back and forth. There is no difference according to AES.
-
Whoa. Toanz is in the arrows na din pala.
-

Quote from AES:
Directionality, or the idea that electricity flows better in one direction through a cable than the other, is a common concept among certain self-identified audiophiles. Belden did a double-blind test for cable directionality in conjunction with an audiophile magazine. The end result was perfectly random. Belden is still happy to manufacture and sell directional cables to enthusiasts. They make up a long length of cable, cut it in segments, identify the ends of the segments so they know how it came off the spool (length A->B, length B->C, length C->D, etc), and then let the customer identify by careful listening which direction is "better". Over thousands of cables sold, the chosen "best" signal flow is random, for segments cut from the same spool!
-
Whoa. Toanz is in the arrows na din pala.
Very subtle lang. Not really a drastic change. Parang wala nga halos eh. I'm not keen on the direction of my cables. Kahit ano sa akin. :-D
Baka nga psychological lang yun e. :-D
-
Whoa. Toanz is in the arrows na din pala.
No, not really.
-

That's THE word. Haha.
LOL on the "self-identified audiophiles" on that AES quote.
No, not really.
Yup. I was being sarcastic. I'm with you on the marketing B.S. on cable directionality.
-

Baka nga psychological lang yun e. :-D
Maybe subtle but it is not my interest to detect this very small difference in sound which is already negligible. Yes, it is probably psychological. Audiophile sells both Lava and DiMarzio directional cables, however, our salespeople can't really hear the difference when plugged the other way.
-
Whoa. Toanz is in the arrows na din pala.
ibig sabihin he found that his current cable sounded better when plugged in a certain direction.
si Eric Johnson nga nung pina refret niya strat niya, narinig niya difference. a friend of mine can tell the difference between the orig selector switch of his guitar and a brand new one.
so if you can hear it, yeah, naturally magkakaroon ng additional preferences in doing things. I RESPECT that. but if you can't hear it, e di okay din. whatever cable rocks your boat. i respect you too.
now buying a cable just because someone says its like that pero hindi mo naririnig, iba na din storya yun.
-
i'm curious what kind of difference yung naririnig nyo? More detail? bass, treble, mids?
More clarity from the mini soar kit (lava mini soar cable + GH plugs), could be more treble and more balanced mids for ease of description. The Dimarzios tend to "dull" out the tone, cutting some highs and having stronger mids.
The Dimarzios were not necessarily bad, they just both sound different, either will work depending on what you're after. I'm using the Dimarzios now rather than the mini soar kit since the GH plugs were quite bulky, the Dimarzios really saved space for me to squeeze the pedals on a small board. I liked how the LAVA sounded, though.

That is the reason why some cable manufacturers gladly continue to make directional cables.

then its not purely gimmick or marketing hype.

then its not purely gimmick or marketing hype.
By pricing it higher they make more money, too!
-
Toan is in the money and arrows then.
I guess it would be more respectable sounding if I typed marketing "hype", rather than marketing B.S. I hope that validates my opinion on this directionality marketing hype.
-
:) or dagdagan nalang para dun sa lava? 2.3k+ ata ung nakita kong lava sa classifieds
-

The cable manufacturers cannot ignore the number of customers who claim to have the ability to hear cable directionality. Dagdag benta din yan. Negosyo lang...
-
Directional cables, lol...
-
ako may nadidinig or more by feel,
Lulz
-

Yes bro. We all play guitar of course. Haven't noticed any change however subtle it may be. I am sure I have plugged my guitar in different directions everytime hugutin ko sa cabinet or sa hardcase yung cable.
It doesn't float my boat... it is just the way the thing is. Ngayon eto:

Yep. I guess we share the same opinion that, no one should pay more for arrows on a cable when you can discover for yourself which direction you are comfortable with. (Provided if there's really a change and you are happy with it.)
-
guitar to effects - vox coil
effects to amp - planet waves
extra cables - bullet cable, stagg (dinadala ko sa gig in case may manghihiram hehe)
-
What I use:
6' Monster Cable angled to straight 1/4" plugs (with arrows, hehehe!)
10' Peavey straight to straight 1/4" plugs
20' Audio-Technica straight to straight Neutrik 1/4" plugs
20' Quik-Lok straight to straight Neutrik 1/4" plugs

new cable (kahit isa lang) or new pedal sa chain.
-

kaya i brought up Leo Fender (LF) bro. kasi dun sa isang fender book na nabasa ko, LF confessed na kala niya nameet na niya lahat, but he'd be amazed daw from time to time with some musicians visiting him kasi kung ano ano raw naririnig. pano kaya kung close minded si Leo Fender noon? LOL
kaya tama ka, kung naririnig mo, then do something about it, kung wala, e di wala.
pag dating sa healthy discussions na ganito, just tell your opinion and be done with it. let the reader do his intelligent evaluation. else it will be like debating about religion.
-
Well, mali kayong lahat. Per say.
Carry on.
-
From guitar to amp, kaya medyo napapansin ko pag nagbabago, pag may napalitan or nagkabaligtad sa gamit ko hehe
Hehehe healthy topic naman 'to.
Mag cable pusher naman kasi kayo

not a fan of the lava cables.. compared to evidence, lava sucks.. (sucks the lows, low mids and emphasizes the upper mids and highs) lol
regarding the reliability of the solderless lava patch cables, i think it depends on how you assembled it. but id still choose the evidence patch cables :D

They can claim it'll make a noticeable improvement sa tonal qualities at humming, but I don't buy it.....
A quality cable with thick copper wires costs around Php30-40 per meter these days, yung mono plug around Php30 din isa.....
Yung ginagamit kong mga assembled na cable hindi pa rin pumapalya antatagal na, or if ever, re-solder lang ulit gana na naman.... :-D

Had a cable shootout a while back and expensive cables do sound noticeably different. I remember it being between Surelock, Planet Waves, and Lava.

talagang YMMV

There is truth to the differences in cables/sound. Haven't tried assembling cables myself, so I only have off-the-shelf cables as a baseline for evaluation. Take note, I record more than I play live and most of the time it's my guitar running straight into my board and into the DAW.
1. The crap P100 cables I had lying around were noticeably noisier and deadened the sound quite a bit. My beater gigging cables are a bit (well, a lot) better than they are.
2. They're a pair of gold-tipped Cort cables that sounded quieter and a bit more detailed but tended to flub out in the low end.
3. I recently bought a pair of Hosa cables for my mixer and tried one of them into my pedalboard. It sounded more balanced than the Cort as the low end didn't flub out as much. It did however lose quite a bit of detail in the upper mids/treble frequencies.
4. Eventually got a slightly more expensive set of cables. The Quiklok Vintage set I'm using now has a more hollow sounding low-end and mellower highs. Not a lot of high-end attenuation but the middle frequencies sound nice.
I've been using the same guitar with the same strings and amp sim settings, so my variables are more or less fixed. More expensive might not mean better sounding, but ideally the material used in making more expensive cables is made with better tolerances/insulation/etc. I wouldn't go overboard, but good cables are worth investing in.
Will be getting a pair of Klotz cables soon.

have to agree. my friends and I did an A/B/C Test of patch cables and we definitely heard the difference. even my sister who does not play any instrument heard the difference.
Test was made using the following patch cables:
Generic PHP100 Patch cables
handmade patchcables using Swan Japan Cables, generic pancake plugs.
Planet Waves Patch cables
George L's Patch Cables
here are our observations:
1. The Generic Patch was super noisy. at first, we didn't notice the noise due to background noise but when we switched to the handmade cables, the noise was definitely lessened. I was really surprised because I never really believed that it made a huge difference in the overall tone of my rig.
2. no tonal change between the handmade patched and the generic ones, when we switched to the planet waves patch cables, the signal became more robust. louder and beefier! again, I was really surprised :O it was virtually noiseless as well.
3. switched to the George L's and wow. that was the first time I heard my rig sound like that. highs were definitely present without the boost I usually get from my EQ Pedal. really made me a believer.
TL;DR, patch cables do have a big effect on the overall tone of your signal chain. however, it depends on the player if he will go all out (i.e. lava, george l's) or go for a slightly cheaper route (Planet Waves). but definitely, we should avoid those generic black plastic cables due to noise and signal loss.

What if I want to use a shorter ( 5 feet ) cable from amp to pedal board and then guitar cable to guitar?
What would be the difference in sound if I use patch cable material from amp to pedal board, as opposed to guitar cable - pedal board - guitar cable?
Let's say an SIS evidence from amp to pedal board.
-

Let's say an SIS evidence from amp to pedal board.
Technically, when you are using a shorter cable, you are lessening the total capacitance of your cable. Therefore, more high frequencies should come through.
SIS Evidence is actually the solderless plug, not the cable itself. To use the SIS Evidence plug, you have to use a particular cable with a solid core, much like the Evidence Monorail or probably the Lava mini SOAR.
Although the SIS Evidence plug + Monorail is a very effective and sturdy patch cable combo, I would still be hesitant to use it for "guitar-board" or "board-amp" applications. Such application would require an even more sturdy cable-to-plug connection that can withstand the rigors of continuous movement and the possibility of being stepped on and coiled around, etc..
The only advantage I see with using the SIS Evidence + Monorail combo for guitar-board or board-amp use is that it's very lightweight and feels like nothing. Then again, there are other similar cables which may be equally lightweight but are designed specifically for guitar-board or board-amp use, such as some George Ls.
As for the difference in sound, I'm not too particular on the differences... but I do rely on the cable's specs heavily when choosing what cable to get (type of plugs, capacitance per foot, length, material of composition, price).
-
Thanks Sir Chino,
So it would'nt matter then if its less than 5 feet, amp to pedalboard, any brand will do? Yes its the sis and monorail.
If price is not an issue, what would your cable of choice, from git to speaker cables be?
-
Chino - I find sis+monorail even sturdier than any soldered cable. I tested yanking it and it wouldn't break. It was used to carry and amp cab with speakers hindi natatanggal yung connection. It's because of the screw in mechanism . The only reason why I wouldn't use it for guitar to board connection is because it is not flexible due to the solid core.
-
right now i'm using a surelock 20ft cable.
previously used a surelock 10ft cable. noon di ako particular sa tunog, but when i tried the longer cable out, very very noticeable yung drop in high frequencies so my guitar, which already sounds murky as it is, turned murkier.
currently hunting for higher end cables to get me more high freqs through.
-
i use evidence audio and belden guitar cable. meron ako lava, the braided wore one, expensive, never liked it. everything sounds flat with that thing. i prefer lava patch cables over GL though. evidence for speaker cable too.
-
Evidence... looks like I need to check their stuff out.

If price was not an issue, then I'd probably be hoarding Evidence, Van den Hul, and Alessandro guitar cables. :money: :money: :money:

That's actually one downside that I see, being it a solid core cable (and maybe solderless, although I've never had a connection issue with my previous LAVA Clear Connect being solderless as well).... I've seen Cayle konk out a SIS and Monorail while screwing in the cable. Too much stress maybe. Solid core broke inside the plug. He got it fixed eventually, though.
I'm with you with them solid cores not being flexible. We had a LAVA Soar before. Users will know how stiff they are.
I'll leave them SIS + Monorail for patch cable use (that's what they're designed for, anyway) and stick to my trusty LAVA ELC for instrument cables. :-)
-
The high end Lava is a Van den hul. It's expensive! lol.
Allesandro cables another thing to check out.

You'll have to isiolate what's causing the humming first. Could be a bad cable, inadequate shielding, nearby equipment, etc. As for cables, investing in a decent quality cable is a must for minimizing noise issues. You don't have to get the very expensive ones naman.
-
Bullet Cable 10 ft.
Guitar > Amp

Klotz Kik Cable (20 feet), I have two of these which are a pain sa ligpitan and sobra haba para kong snake charmer pag tumutugtog. Cut one of the cables and soldered neutrik plugs now i have two cables, these cables have been with me since 2008, the last batch from audiophile i think - now they are distributed by Yamaha. I still have the other one untoched(20 ft) but I don't think I'll convert that to two cables just yet.
pedalboard patch cords - used to use mooer patch cables and z-connectors which are a total waste of money. i now use 3 evidence audio cables i made and two remaining solderless planetwaves patch cords - gold plated tips (nawala na yun 3 ko :-( )
I'll get 4 more evidence audio sis plugs and a foot more of monorails when i have the moolah.
-
Evidence. Try it. Youll never go back to cheap cables.

mukhang ok naman but i'm not sure kasi hindi ako naka base sa pinas. why not offer a much cheaper option? like mogami cable with amphenol plugs then kung sino na lang yung may gusto ng neutrik, klotz, etc, they can have a custom built cable.

It's part of the plan kaso mas mahirap kumuha ng mogami.

I like Klotz, stiff and sturdy.
