Maring salamat.

first guitar ko is an RJ telecaster. ok siya for a beginner's guitar. pero pag nadedevelop ka na as a player, you would always look for something more. ganon talaga e. hehe. wag ka lang masyado expect ng malaki sa RJ guitar.

yes, meron po mga guitar makers dito sa pinas  :D

by the way, Mr. Ramon Jacinto does not make those guitars, namumuhunan lang sya, sa ibang development/design siguro pero sa production na mismo, i think hindi na.

I also have the same take on that. I think pickups will improve the sound greatly. Also, I think you'd have to spend a bit more on a fret job right after you get it from the shop -- most of their guitars rarely have good fret jobs when taken out of the box.

Hahaha! That's "The Ultimate Guitar Book"! I also have that and have been drooling over the guitars inside.

The RJ LP indeed looks and feels great. I'm wondering how the SG sounds because I'm planning to get one this Christmas season.

I suggest that every one in this forum try out RJ guitars, they're reasonably priced and for the price, I feel that they can put up a good fight against Korean and Chinese Fender Squiers.

stratman, here is an RJ Les Paul; 2 pictures.  It plays well and no need for a fretwork.  In fact it t has a fast and even neck/fretboard.  Maybe I am just lucky.  Weird it feels better than a few Gibson Les Paul's that I have played.  The salesman adamantly insists that it is made in R.P. not from the rumored Korea.  I tend to agree because it feels different from Korean mass produced Epiphone Les Paul's I have played.  I have not fully test-run the pickups, so no comment for now.  See pixes, yummy--not a Gibson but feels like one...

I used to have this RJ Lightwood strat; the cheapest strat they have, but sounded better than their more expensive models. Maybe it was the white pine (palochina?) body. I had it modded into a double fat strat and looked like this...

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a376/vegetablejoe/RJ_Litewood.jpg

Would have come out better if the body had had a swimming pool route, para tama yung puwesto ng humbuckers...

For me, it's not even being about pinoy. It's all about recognizing the fact that RJ guitars were meant to create a reasonable value versus price ratio for a 3rd world country like the Philippines. I'll use the same argument that people are using to justify their BEHRINGER purchases: They may not be as good as other products out there, but when it comes to value for money, no one can beat their products.

Case in point for RJ: Would you rather get the RJ Strat which has a solid body and nice hardware or would you get the Korean Squier with a [gooey brown stuff] plyboard body (which Fender terms as  "laminated wood". blech), noisy electronics and warped fretboards?

I think you guys get the picture.

Titser Marco, I absolutely agree.  Try pinoy first.  10 years  ago to be exact I bought an RJ strat clone; it was horrible man.  I bought it because it was cheap and would not use my number guitar then (an Epiphone Joe Pass) for gigs.  It was okey to thrash my RJ.

Ten years later (2005), I read reviews at Harmony-Central from expats, Australians and Americans giving RJ (335 and Les Paul) some glowing reviews.  So a few weeks back I tried a few of their guitars.  Some are still not up to it, but the first thing I noticed was the wood that they were using.  They look better  than the Korean made Epi Les Paul's.  The best of the group I tried is their setneck Les Paul.  although I prefer hollow-bodied jazz guitars, I just could not resist the price $185 while a real Gibson would already be from $1800 to $2300 range.

In short, try before you judge--made in the Philippines lang.  RJ guitars should pay me for this.  Ramon Jacinto(!) if you are reading this you owe me one.  I am saying this because it makes me proud if a PINOY product does well in the world market.  sige.
I'd rather be sharp than flat.

Hi BAMF,

Setneck or bolt-on neck ba itong RJ Les Paul.  The reason I ask because I am curious about RJ Les Paul's myself.  Whether setnecks have better Les Paul tone.  Are you selling it?

rene

Heya. I'm not giving up on it yet :D. It's a set-neck standard model (as a Les Paul should be :D) When I tested it at the store, it sure was heavenly. Great tone and sustain.  But when I got home, I was having certain "resonance" problems with it...my smaller amp was giving out uninspiring "thumps" in the lower registers. It seems like it wants an amp that has at least a 12 inch driver, better kung 18 so it might not match your small micro-amps. Mukhang something can be done about it by adjusting the EQ, contour and amp sim settings on my MultiFX.

Technically speaking, any design can be held on only for 17 years before a patent expires and the thing can enter the public domain. That's why strat clones appeared with impunity. Ang foul lang is if you use their tradename in your headstock (like the Sta Mesa guitars which shamelessly put on "Ibanez" or "Washburn" or "Fender" on their headstocks).

At the start RJ would not come out with Gibson clones. Some could be had but they were custom.  He could have done so if he really wanted to, maybe they had a gentleman's agreement with Gibson or Epiphone...or maybe he had other reasons. But looks like that's water under the bridge now. Check out their tobacco sunburst ES-335. Gawd...just looking at the thing is...sexual !!!

Bayaan mo syang mag, po!  Old skool values, bro.  Bihira na nga yan e.

Nice article on that RJ site. My 2nd electric guitar ever (the first was a local Fender Strat clone from Raon) was a Roadtone by Mang Rudy. Nabili ko from my high schoolmate's brother who was with a a semi-sikat na band nung 80s. It was natural finish, 2 HB Strat copy with switches for in- and out-of-phase. Very verstatile talaga for blues, rock, slide, etc. so it played dozens of gigs, concerts, etc.  At one gig, nilapitan ako ni RJ at hinawakan yung gtr ko after kami tumugtog.  Sabi nya kilala nya raw yung mismong gtr na un. Natuwa ako for him pero at that time I was already itching to play traditional Strat and LPs. I sold the gtr shortly after that for I think 2,000 pesos!!!  Hey, how would a kid like me know, d b?

I do agree na mapapalingon ka talaga sa RJ guitars ngayon and competitive na rin siguro vs some Korea, Indo, Chinese production gtrs.

EDIT: OK, mukhang na-editorialize yung post ko (why???) sa let me just stress that I said "some" not all.
