The Pixies... well, it was started by a Pinoy. And they marched on to become one of the most influential punk rock bands in music history.

The Pixies... well, it was started by a Pinoy. And they marched on to become one of the most influential punk rock bands in music history.
-
weeell, if we're gonna start counting bands with members that have filipino blood...what about metallica? they've influenced loooaaads of bands.
-
JUAN DELA CRUZ BAND hands down.
-
ASIN 8)
-
eraserheads!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
they shattered the door between the underground and mainstream para marinig ung iba pang magagaling na pinoy rock bands
-
eraserheads - why the eraserheads? why not? their ground breaking debut album, ultraelectromagneticpop still sells well 10 years after its original release. before the eraserheads the airwaves belonged to the ballads and love songs. also, they showed the world what the filipino could do by winning the best music video for "huling el bimbo".
-
1.Juan Dela Cruz Band- 'cause thay started it all
2. Wolfgang, Razorback, POT- 'cause they're the most original and mature musicians now
3. Eraserheads- kasi their songs get stuck in your head for a very long time
-
I dont like 'em. (http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons6/78.gif)

Yung unang Rockstar.
Joke.

Pinoy Fab Four of course
-
eraserheads--cuz they're really a phil. icon. they were a breakthough
wolfgang--cuz IMO they can hang with Metallica

Juan dela Cruz

Old School Rivermaya
Sorry but the e-heads are so overrated
-
Juan dela Cruz...
They gave way to the modern rock groups of today!
-
-
agree, eheads, kasi they paved the way for the resurgence of pinoy rock. marami silang natulungan, kahit di nila alam.
-
I agree with most of the post..
in my biased opinion ( :D ) it's still eheads..
those guys really awaken the rock star in all of us, nung
generation namin.. (the only reason i learn to play the
guitar was to do the 'ligaya' song 8) )
They (with their contemporaries - rivermaya etc..) shifted
the then music trend of the pinoys.
of course, the grandfather of pinoy rock pa rin rulez!
Juan dela Cruz!!
-
it is a toss up between the ones who first took pinoy rock seriously... juan dela cruz... and the ones who suddenly emerged and reinvented pinoy rock to suit the masses... eraserheads...

There is no question in my mind.
The original Rockstar. With Paul Sapiera on Guitar and vocals.
By far the best filipino Rock guitarist ever.
If you don't agree, you haven't seen them live.
-
eraserheads
-
Juan Dela Cruz Band. Nuff said.
The E-heads?? Well, they could be credited for the college-rock influx of the 90s, but that's as far as they go IMHO. After their 3rd album, things got way too formulaic.
-
-
Old School Rivermaya
Sorry but the e-heads are so overrated
the eraserheads? the band that pretty much paved the way for local bands to get airplay on local radio when the airwaves were plagued by ballads, "overrated"? they deserve every credit that have been given to them. it didn't take good looks for them to get noticed by everyone (which is more than i can say for bands these days). all they had were their talent and a few songs about everyday life. unlikely heroes, that's the charm of the eraserheads. the four boy-next-door kids from UP who captivated the country with their music and changed music as we see it in the philippines. overrated, indeed.
i believe that the "old school rivermaya" would have to be the most overrated band in the history of filipino music. i believe that perf de castro and bamboo, though good musicians in their own right, hindered rico blanco's creativity and progress with the band. rivermaya has always been all about rico blanco, he penned the lyrics and wrote the music for the group. it's not easy being green, a rivermaya without bamboo and perf, is a testament to this. taking over vocal duties, rico blanco came out of his musical shell and started writing some of the most original, refreshing and beautiful songs of the decade, and continues to do so to this day. rico blanco deserves his place in the limelight. he is, and will always be, rivermaya. the new rivermaya is here to stay.
wolfgang? the band would have been great if they didn't have leslie gemora as their drummer. a shame, really, the rest of the band are gifted enough to handle their positions well. leslie gemora has got to be one of the worst drummers of all time. the way he attacks his skins are boring, repetitive and predictable, he doesn't lift the music at all. instead of adding subtance, he seems to strip it away from the rest of the band. a drummer should be able to make a good song into a great song. just listen to jimmy's stuff on the early pumpkin records.
P.O.T., though a great band in their own right, does not deserve to be labelled as "the greatest pinoy rock band of all time". in order for you to be the greatest, you would have to do great things. the band just hasn't done enough to be even considered for the coveted title. they've only released one album. one of their most popular songs from that album, "yugyugan na" is just a cover version of the original hit by the advisors. they were a band that had plenty of potential but never really got to tap into it as much. shame, really.
Yano, they could be considered as one of the greatest bands ever. why? alongside the eraserheads, they've influenced a lot of bands. also, they were able to take a slice of the scene as their audience back when everyone was still listening to ballads. their folk-acoustic-punk-rock approach is unique and pleasing to the ears. also, they were never afraid to speak their minds, their tongue-in-cheek lyrics often speak of corruption in the country, everyday life, joining rallies and activism, just to name a few. this honesty in their music has made their songs into anthems for the average young filipino. sick and tired of copping bullsh*te from everyone, it's good to stick it to the man while listening to Dong Abay screaming "TRAPO! TRAPO KA KASI!". Yano did what they did best, play what they want to play and sung about what they're going through along the way, which i find admirable. there are already too many scenesters out there.

-
definitely Razorback.
-
Juan De La Cruz (original pinoy rock).................and the rest are spawns and broods.............

Parang higher being or something like that, na nag-uudyok sa kanila,
At galit daw sila sa mga basurang kanta, which is out of religious content,
It sounds very creepy, to the point iba-iba na ang sinasabi,
Parang may mga tama na nga eh, If you heard their songs without,
hearing one of their live interviews, maybe you will say their not bad at all,
But after I heard the crap on their interview, na-shock ako.
ano ba yun?

lol, maybe they're just trying to add deep meanings to their songs when in reality they just made them when they were really bored. 8)

"Pack of Lies". Is that what you mean bro?
Radio and Television is one powerful media for learning and education.
The song itself is not the point here but the crap from what he said in their
interview. Masyadong kasinungalingan at imposible.
If you will analyze, parang may sarili silang religion or a sect, that sounds
creepy. But if you will listen to their song, parang concern citizen lang
ang sumulat.
Fame and the chance to see live on national television does not permit you nor get the freedom to tell lies and crapping other minds...
-
Or even this forum does not give you any freedom and permission for crapping minds. Because that is a total crap.
If you have a child of your own you will understand my behalf.

Break the ice mga sir!.......................
Mukhang napanood ko yang sinsabi nyo sir....................If I am not mistaken that was the interview of MTV - PARA BOSS.................Kuha yan sa Club Dredd sir tanda ko pa.......... Weird!

haha, that's really deep, man. i dunno what to say about that... but i'd just like to mention something, i read somewhere that members of the wuds are all devout hare krishnas (or however you spell it) so maybe that's one reason why they seem really weird and "out there"? :P

Not to mention the occasional(or habitual) wacky tobacky sessions.
-
i'm sorry, i'm not much into modern local stuff, but i'd say Juan de la Cruz, Sampaguita and ASin. Those are the innovators, and later came the Dawn, Razorback, and Wolfgang
-
If I had to pick only one, then it would be JUAN DELA CRUZ. They're the Philippines first ever rock royalty. They epitomized Pinoy Rock since the 70's ... until of course the 90's when ERASERHEADS make their indelible dominance in the Pinoy rock scene, a short stint in the international limelight of course cemented their legacy.
Again for me, it's Juan dela Cruz, with E-heads a very close second.
-
definitely. ...without the ERASERHEADS in the Phillippines during the 90's, our country would have been pop-oriented.
-
90's was the time of eraserheads................................ alone!
-
Naging trend setter kasi ang e-heads noong 90's.
Parang juan de la cruz noong 70's.
-
Yeah!
-
-
e-heads
-
90's was the time of eraserheads................................ alone!
hmmm..

I have big respect for Wolfgang and Razorback because they are good up in the stage rather the heads............... but the e-heads captures a-lot of hearts with their songs............ compare to Wolfgang and Razorback which captures the only the heart of their fellow musician like me.......
E-heads produces lots of albums compare to Wolfgang and Razorback anyway............ well a lot of bands tried to even the pheonomena but not even rivermaya got close............. And wayback 90's, rivermaya looks like "gaya-gaya puto maya" with the E-heads...........imitation

ERASERHEADS...
-
ERASERHEADS... The greatest band the Philippines had ever produced.
-
Like beatles alright.........
-
Eheads.
Fruitcake is their legacy.
-
eraserheads!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
they shattered the door between the underground and mainstream para marinig ung iba pang magagaling na pinoy rock bands
I agree. The Eraserheads' songs allowed rock to be pop.
So, I say:
Eraserheads - for bringing rock back to the musical map
Wolfgang/Razorback (can't really take the two apart, IMO) - for bringing the bite back to rock
Juan dela Cruz - for making rock Pinoy
These are the big three. Can't get any other Pinoy band with the greatest impact than these three.
Oh... does VST & Co. qualify as a band?
-
Free... this is an excellent, excellent reply.
I only agree with you partly, kasi I don't consider Yano to be a band, I think they're more of a group of poets than a rock band... like how Patti Smith was as an artist.
That was worth PHP 0.02 for you :)

THE ERASERHEADS
Talagang meant for the band ang mga talento nila.

Yano did what they did best, play what they want to play and sung about what they're going through along the way, which i find admirable. there are already too many scenesters out there.
rico?!
-
..definitely YANO and tsinelas is an awesome band and a classic album now and will definitely stand the test of time. I love this band at yang album nilang yan. The eheads had more classic albums though kaya they get my vote but Yano comes second on my books :D
-
I have to agree that the Eraserheads OWNED the 90's scene.
But the best all-time pinoy rock band pa din for me is...Juan dela Cruz. They embodied and epitomized PINOY ROCK even down to their lifestyles. Why if you say Pinoy Rock, what band first comes to mind ?
-
Ill bet juan dela cruz since panahon pa ni marcos sya kauna unahan nag invent ng pinoy rock kaya sya na rin ang kauna unahan magiging pinoy rock legacy all the time.
-
Yup, JDLC is the epitomy of pinoy rock. E-heads and Yano are right up there too...
-
Juan de la Cruz band - Pepe Smith, Mike Hanopol, and Wally Gonzales of course!

basta mga 70's up to 90's na pinoy rock ay legend para sa kin and they still part of a legacy rock kaya sa panahon nila ay simple lang sila may pagkahirap at tyaga din at iisa pa walang daya ive envy and respect for them kung makabalik si ely sa eheads im sure sila na lang ang 2nd god of pinoy rock ang 1st god na si juan dela cruz, parang ituturing mong mala genre metallica ang type yan si juan dela cruz. 8)

-
eheads - best band during the 90's
the dawn - best pinoy band during the 80's
juan dela cruz - best band during the 70's
and to all the pinoy bands who played the battle of the bands in sporscenter in Marikina, their the best bands for me in my high school years...
-
Right now,it's The Itchyworms...even though di naman sila sikat. Baduy yung"Kabataang Pinoy".
other candidates ko para sa award na Pinaka astig ngayon are:Parokya ni Edgar,Sponge Cola,Sugarfree,Kamikazee at Bamboo...
-
masyadong out of my generation ang Juan Dela Cruz eh.. :D
for me its Wolfgang...
(nakakatuwa ang itchyworms kasi para silang ROCK-version ng Apo Hiking Society hehehe who by the way made the best of lyrics and melodies)
pero Wolfgang talaga for me.

im not too familiar with JDC (because i was still crawling when they came out and i dont have any of their songs now ) but from the way so many people are reacting to them being the greatest pinoy rock band ever, then i guess they are. or could be. :-D
but for me, EHEADS for my generation is the best pinoy rock band ever. no doubt about that.
i dont agree with RIVERMAYA. they didn't and haven't given that much influence on the music industry and over us. sorry.

i'm way too young to judge who is the Greatest Pinoy Rock band of all time. i was born in the 80's and was musically aware lang nung 90s. So for me Eraserheads and Rivermaya (new and old) are way up there. So is Parokya ni Edgar.
The Dawn would have been pretty darn big way back. Biruin mo SMB ang kumuha sa kanila as sponsors, and i'm aware few good songs.
Siguro someone authoritative should write this. For arguments sake lang :).

as much as i love dong abay, it seems that he has lost some of the energy, sincerity and integrity that made him such a crucial part of yano. yano was a lot more than just dong abay. eric gancio's sound was tremendous. it was a sound that's truly his own. it is of things that go bump at night. the little monsters under your bed. its like the melodic cries and howls of a demon in pain. it is what you fear the most, coming at you from the deepest and darkest corners of your soul. it latches on to you and sucks your soul dry. the scariest part of all would be the fact that after all this you can't help but beg for more. onie badiang's sticky basslines...
i'll have to finish this when i get home.. see you all soon fellow yano fans :)

note to posters, we al have our fave bands and we all have our reasons why we love them so much. don't just state which ones you adore, let us know why you think they're so great! i'm tired of going through this thread to read about people saying that their fave bands are JDLC, eraserheads, rivermaya, wolfgang, etc . what is it about them? their tone? their songwriting? their popularity? guitar riffage? i'm sure i'm not the only one who feels this way :)
-
eheads - they're the first band i've ever come to love. i was still in elementary when my sister came home with their ultraelectro tape. since then i been addicted. their tunes are trippy, not to mention, raw and easily to listen to. their lyrics always strike close to heart. the songs that they've made are always about something we can relate to and that says a lot them being geniuses and honest and true individuals. We love them because cab keep up with what they're saying and they're telling us its okay to be different.

Yes! They opened the great door of Rock for all of us here. 8-)

It has to be Rivermaya. they were on the verge of going international. Their longevity and influence on the Music scene has been so impressive. Through the years, from the 90's band explosion until the recent resurgence of Alternative Music, Rivermaya has survived the ups and downs. And if you were able to see their performance at the 2006 MTV Asian awards with the Thai royal army orchestra, you could really see that there's a bright future for OPM! Sila yung nag pave way for foreign record labels to get us noticed. Kahit na matagal na ang dawn and parokya (don't mean to demean them), di pa rin sila naka breakout sa international music scene... and ang Eheads, nagbreakout din sila, but i think the acceptance wasn't the same as with Rivermaya.
But with Rico B. departing form rivermaya, this will be some interesting times. But I have faith that the remaining band members can still come up with good quality music.
Simply Put!
Juan dela Cruz-the father of opm rock music
the Dawn- the greatest opm new wave band (hanggang ngayon, walang kamatayan yung new wave music nila)
Parokya- greatest pinoy rock parody band
Eraserheads- the greatest pinoy rock band of its era
The greatest pinoy rockband of all time?
RIVERMAYA! :-D
-
One more thing pala. Rivermaya can also be credited as the one who paved way for indie artists when they went indie for a moment with their FREE album. Even that didn't stop the band from surviving. How can't you be the greatest pinoy rock band of all time when you essentially covered every aspect in surviving the music industry.
talent wise
music wise
marketing wise
appeal wise
live performance
lahat na yata na sa kanila na! :-D
Ito ay in my most humble opinion. tuloy ang ligaya!
-

though i do enjoy listening to some of their songs, it seems that i have just grown tired of PNE's tried-and-tested approach into creating an album. by that, i do mean the usual inclusion of the following:
a "senti" song for the masses which everyone would be able to relate to
a cover song and/or a spoof, redone PNE-style, of course
recordings of their antics in and out of the studio, usually included as album fillers
perhaps an obligatory "cheeky" or suggestive song, largely due to the success of their hit single "don't touch my birdie"
an album cover full of apparently humorous photos of the band engaged in outrageous acts or silly costumes.
they would then release videos for their singles, seemingly entertaining videos which would try, just a little too hard, to make you and me laugh.
now, i know a lot of people enjoy what PNE does, i guess i'm just one of the few who expected more from a band with plenty of potential. though they have experimented with a number of different genres, i just don't believe they have grown much as a band. unlike their contemporaries (eraserheads, rivermaya, yano etc) they have often stayed in their comfort zone. though it obviously works for them, it might also be what's holding them back. as a matter of taste, i would say that PNE is an entertaining band, but they hardly deserve the monicker of "the greatest of all time".
as an added note, i would love to hear some more contributions from buhawi. even a solo effort perhaps?
-
its nice to hear different opinions of different people. thanks sir! :-D
-
For me the greatest pinoy band is the eraserheads. If you will ask most of the bands today on which musician have influenced them, most of them will say that it's the eheads. Aside from paving for the emergence of bands in the opm today, i think it's the influence of the eraserheads on the musician today that makes them as the greatest pinoy band. Even the great musician Rico Blanco is always paving tribute to the eraserheads during their gigs, he even sang the MAGASIN song.
The songs of the eraserheads have captured so many aspects of life, such as love, friendship, humor, gays, poverty, alcoholism, hope etc. I also think they are the only band in which four or five of their songs are in the top 10 radio countdown.

Eheads! Eheads! Eheads! G3t back na!!!
-

-
Well...sidedish lang, malupet si manong Dong Abay...
Alay may kapangyarihan aztig..
Meron talagang talents
-
I'll go for eheads. Basta I just liked how they created their songs. Very original and pinoy like. "andulusian dog" is one of my favorites. cool eh,

I think when someone is popular he/she has many distinct and great quality that makes him/her popular.
So it's not surprising that the most popular in their craft like The Beatles, Micheal Jordan and Muhammad Ali(the boxer), are also the greatest of all time in their crafts. So greatness and popularity is very related to each other. Eheads being the most popular band off all time in the phil at their prime, says something alot about the band.
-
No offenses in this question, Peace!!

"we don't want to be famous, we'd rather be in the underground scene". Masakit pero totoo. Khit Kamikazee nag mainstream eh. The fact na hindi napipigilan ang pag sikat ses it all.
Just look at "sino sikat?" underground land sila nun, ngaun sikat na. weird noh? peace to all.
-
"Hoy buloy nasan ka man siguradong kawawa ka malamang walang alak dyan"
Any band who wins this thread kasama pa rin talaga PNE.

dong abay... and wolfgang... and razorback... the best bands yan for me

juan de la cruz band
-
POT - the vocals, guitarist, bassist and drummer are all masters in their own right.
not to mention the lyrics and the music theyve made are great!!!
but then i only speak for myself because this is a very subjective topic. to each his own.
-
juan dela cruz
-
walang kurap sa isip .
ERASERHEADS
-
70's - juan dela cruz / maria cafra / sampaguita
80's - betrayed / ethnic faces / urban bandits / dead ends
90's - jose mari chain / manananggal / canabis / tikbalang / E-HEADS :-D hehehe...
00's - radio active sago project /
all time - hmmm.... i'd say... JUAN DELA CRUZ BAAAAAAAND!!!! yeah. sarap nun, ah. parang sisig. :-D coz they started it all. ice.
peace. :-)
-
There is only one band that has the right to get that title and that's THE DAWN.
Reginald "Jett" Pangan
Carlos "Caloy" Balcells
Teddy Diaz
Jun Boy Leonor
Francis "Kiko" Reyes
Atsushi Matsuura
After the sudden hibernation of Rock N'Roll in the 80's this band reinvented Pinoy Rock thru their anthemic "Enveloped Ideas" from their self titled debut album. Then with the release of I Stand With You (the band second album) they have given traditional filipino music a new feel with "Magtanim Ay Di Biro".
The only band who released a live rock album in the late eighties.
The only band who did not sell out and did not sacrifice their artistic freedom.
-
earlier i mention juan de la cruz band for their unique contribution in pinoy rock scene "the pioneers" . one of the greatest band i think is eraserheads for their originality, creativity, and influence.
-
-
eraserheads.
-
juan dela cruz
-
the eraserheads or juan dela cruz. can't go wrong with either.
-
JUAN DELA CRUZ, WOLFGANG, POT!!! the best!!!hehehe I love them!!!
-
For me its The Eraserheads....
Ayon na rin sa BMG, as of 2000 they have sold 1.5 Million Records, no other Pinoy act comes close. (http://www.mb.com.ph/issues/2006/08/06/ENTR2006080671019.html)
Marami ring 'great' na basketball players before Michael Jordan di ba?
No offense ment to JDCB and mga fans nito. Definitely very influential at critically acclaimed ang JDCB, pero hindi nila na-reach yung 'Mass Acclaim' na natamasa ng E-heads, which is very much essential para matawag kang 'Greatest Pinoy Band of All Time'.
Dalawang Sentimo ko lang po... :D
-
eheads and juan dela cruz! :-)
-
P.O.T. - need not to say more!
-
juan dela cruz dati, rivermaya siguro ngayon
-
juan dela cruz for me!!! love the the name of the band too, pinoy na pinoy!!!
-
Razorback, wolfgang, sampaguita, juan dela cruz band.......... yeah,
-
definitely WOLFGANG and RAZORBACK.
i love THE JERKS too. saw them performed in 70's bistro a couple of weeks ago. (finally!) ang lupeeet!
-
Juan Dela Cruz band
-
on a per era basis:
70s - Juan dela Cruz
80s - The Dawn
90s - Eraserheads
-
lol at this thread becoming the "whos youre FAVORITE pinoy rock band of all time?"....POT?razorback?wolfgang?skychurch?....no disrespect but c'mon now guys ya'll know its the eraserheads- the greatest pinoy rock band of all time..,,,
.....at bakit lahat ng pumili sa Juan dela Cruz band as the greatest e iisa lng ung dahilan kung bakit un ang pinili nla- "because they started the whole rock scene etc. etc...." ....i dont think thats enough...,,,,eheads FTW
-
yup i respect the JDCB.they started the wholething.
they wrote great classic songs.
but they didnt experiment.
they didnt reach out to the whole class (i mean ang iba pangmasa, ang iba pangcoņo..)
they didnt sell that much.and wala pa nun piracy, mind you.
it's the eheads.
sila second coming ng rock nung 90's
as niravana is to the world.
and they did everything mentioned above.
if im not mistaken ng platinum agad circus nun, launching palang.
sobrang raming hits at sa both class sya nakakaabot.
may nasabasa ako na rico blanco penned more hits in the 90's than any other songwriter(even including ely and the gang and the likes of ogie.).
-
Juan de la Cruz and The Dawn...well both of these bands endured what could have been the hardest times a band had experienced...no venues to play, no radio station support (mostly on payola basis)...opm recording outfits on their era are leaning more towards showbiz style recordings...and the scene during their times are heavily on showbands
btw, Eheads didnt claimed theyr music as rock but rather consider themselves as pop
-
It's eheads for me, greatness is not a question of atmosphere before, it's a question of what you have achieve and how you influence the other bands, eheads is ahead compare to the dawn and juan delacruz in these department in my opinion.
-
EHEADS
-
It's eheads for me, greatness is not a question of atmosphere before, it's a question of what you have achieve and how you influence the other bands, eheads is ahead compare to the dawn and juan delacruz in these department in my opinion.
i didnt get this :|
-
Juan Dela Cruz
-
Razorback and Wolfgang tied! No doubt about it.
They fit in just right when Pinoy Rock is the topic.
And in 2nd place, Bamboo. Very good musicians.
BTW, I judged them by my standards, and mine alone. hehe.
Ano magagawa ko, sila paborito ko? hehe. ROCK ON!!!
-
pot pati bamboo... all star kasi....
-
"For crying out loud, we were pitted against the Eraserheads, who were arguably the best ever. To be pitted against a phenomenon was great training for the future. You can pit us against any band now, because we were up against the best."

Saan at kailan nya to sinabi sir? :? :-)
-
I think a few months ago, I have just read that interview, just google it
-
The Dawn. The song"Iisang Bangka Tayo" meant a lot to me.My survival(yun yung team song sa dragonboat rowing team namin dati) and fortunes (yun din ang theme song namin pag nagsusugal kami sa casino ngayon)depends a lot on that song.hehe.
-
WOW.great words from rico blanco.
just proves na eheads started a revolution.lahat na member may icocontribute at gumagawa ng kanta.na mismong ibang henyo, nakakarecognize.
sino nakabasa nung tribute-essaybook para sa eheads?
markus explained their role best:
ely was the kapitan - he was the songwriting genuis and controls the ship.
raims makes sure they were 5times ahead of the game.kaya raming napauso.mapakulay ng buhok hanggang electronica beats in a pop song.
buddy no question was a virtouso
and markus provides the punk rocknroll element. (remember punk zappa?).
no question.maraming magaling kaso sobrang kumpleto kasi ang eheads kaya nahirap malagpasan o malamangan.
-
Wolfgang and Razorback...
+1

Eheads and Juan dela Cruz band...
honorable mention: the dawn,

Juan DelaCruz band at Eraserheads.
-
For me Juan Dela Cruz Band is the Greatest; EHeads is definitely the Next!
-

Pero I respect yours posts. hehe.
-
Juan Dela Cruz and The Dawn
im a fan of eheads too..pero di ko masasabi na sila ang best dahil iba ang marketing ng bands nung panahon ng JDC at The Dawn kesa sa panahon ng eheads...bihira nakapakinig ng mga sinaunang pinoy bands dahil hindi ganun ka-grabe airplay nila...
-
since di ko inabutan sina pepe smith sa juan dela cruz band noong time ng kasikatan nila, I'd say Eraserheads..
-
Razorback! definitely one of the most original and one of the greatest! w/ the best vocalist imo.
tpos Wolfgang
-
Q u e s o
-
Eraserheads. Underated but sensational.
Saan kayo nakakita sa pinas ng bandang:
Nagsolo concert, 3 day ticket sale, 30,000+ people watched it, most people paid for it (kahit more than P1,000), most artist were stunned for their reunion. Well I won't mention everything dahil di kasya sa character limit hehe.
Peace po! :-D

juan dela cruz..period..roots tlaga ng pinoy rock and roll..
-
Greatest Pinoy Rock Band of all time....hirap ata yan. Siguro yung music accomplishments at impact mo ang magsasabi whether or not pwede ka ihanay sa "greatest pinoy rock band."
PS.
-
Juan de la Cruz band - Pepe Smith, Mike Hanopol, and Wally Gonzales of course!
:o

-
Juan Dela Cruz ang TUNAY na Pinoy Rock... period...
yep :-D uber pioneers :-D
-
"Buhay 'Gapo is an electrified Filipino 'karnabal' captured from a circus that is Olongapo."
-
Yeah, Maria Cafra.... panalo....
-
eraserheads.
The Pixies... well, it was started by a Pinoy. And they marched on to become one of the most influential punk rock bands in music history.

-
-
Hmm... Eheads pa din.
Ganto kasi un Big Bang (or should I say "Band", hehe) Theory about the Pinoy Rock Scene:
Before Eheads, sikat na sikat un mga balladeers (Ariel Rivera, Gary V., Donna Cruz, etc. etc.)
Nde mashadu napaguusapan un Juan dela Cruz band and their contemporaries before the time.
While into listening Eheads, naimpluwensyahan nila un ibang tao na mag banda din and un ibang producers na mag banda din (thus lumabas un Rivermaya, Yano, The teeth, Alamid, etc.)
Deeper into liking the Eheads together with their contemporaries, namulat un masa about rock and roll, san ba galing yan? Me mga gumawa pa ng thesis tungkol sa mga kanta, success and origins ng Eheads. (thus mas nadagdagan pa un mga taong namulat sa Juan dela Cruz band and their contemporaries)
Nun namulat na un masa sa rock and roll, nagkaron na ng iba ibang taste and likings un mga tao about the rock genre (thus lumutang na un music ng Wolfgang, Razorback, etc.)
If being greatest is defined by a band that made significant influence to the Filipinos about the Pinoy rock scene. No doubt its Eheads. By using the Masa Formula, its almost non-debatable. I doubt someone could tell stories like this about some other bands. Those mentioned bands here are great bands indeed, but not the greatest.
If being greatest is defined by a band that has the most good songs, definitely not eheads. They did more significant things than that, they might not know it or intentionally did that. But they became messengers at that.
-
Juan de la Cruz
-
ah, ASIN?
-
its the 'heads for me...why? i wasnt even an embryo when juan dela cruz made the pinoy rock i know,
in short i'm too young to know them.
i chose the 'heads coz they are my generations music, this is purely my opinion,
but there is no other greater band phenomenon in the RP other than them.
i loe how they write songs in filipino and it still doesn't sound baduy(which is evident on other genre's other than rock)
although i think hindi si ely ang nag-pen ng lahat ng lyrics ng heads, it was his sister right?(this is totally OT)
originality, well i do think they sound really brit(beatles influenced eh) not too pinoy i guess,
still musically speaking the eraserheads are supreme, not overrated(bamboo IS overrated) thick sounds that pound the heart,
catchy melodies which you can sing along to, and most of all, powerful and heartfelt songs overall...sarap di ba?
PS.
i think comparing JDLC and Eheads is like looking at a father and son profile, same flesh and blood but totally different individuals
though JDLC is quite special because my deceased uncle(shot four times for some reason RIP uncle), who talked to me about rock n' roll for hours
really liked them, my uncle is a personal hero of mine thats why the band still comes close to the greatest.

Define Greatest. (Skill?Popularity?Legacy?Greatest based on what?)
Anyways, In general:
1. Juan De La Cruz - Based on Legacy
2. Wolfgang - Skill, Innovation and one of the first ones that proved that Pinoy rock music can go international.
3. Eraserheads - Popularity

Greatest is Dead Ends
- first fully independent album release
-all their 3 other albums were also independently produced and released.
-they are known in undergroud scenes across the globe.
-their songs confronted the Marcos regime head on, risking their lives, they were even there during the EDSA revolution
-it was a time when rock/punk non conformist music was considered demonic, so imagine the struggle
-they didnt do catchy, pang masa songs, so for me, it means they were really into the art
-their last album mamatay sa ingay shows skilled they were, especially the late bassist Jay Dimalanta, and guess who played guitar in that album? right, Lourd de Veyra
-until now chief songwriter and vocalist Al dimalanta still plays without losing aggression in the band THROW, still truly "independent", has not sold out
-they have influenced countless kids to be inspired to form bands including a kid named RAYMOND MARASIGAN, who even mentioned them in of his songs from his side project.
- all their lyrics about the struggles of youth and politics are still very much current. they werent spoiled, rich brats and were in the thick of things during the notoriously dangerous 80s punk scene,
So there, that's my critical analysis, Dead Ends showed both integrity and skill plus relevance. I look at bands/artists based on what their intentions are. And Al DImalanta was a poet of the streets who bravely shouted against an infamously oppresive regime with straight uncloaked lyrics and also sang about the dysfunctions of adolescence without the usual imagery of drugged out and drunken rockers.

BOW.
wow! I love your take on.. "I look at bands/artists based on what their intentions are." top notch!

Greatest is Dead Ends
di ba pwedeng Urban Bandits o Wuds o Betrayed o RDA o IOV they also had the same integrity
-
para sa akin...eheads. the way they sustained their marketability is amazing for a local band...yeah medyo sell out pero magaling talaga eh.
-
The wuds - for not selling out
Eheads - for opening the flood gates
Razorback/Spy - for rocking hard

Di sila tumigil, or Al to be specific.

how do we gauge greatness?
number of albums? frequency of gigs? number of major concerts? number of HIT songs (on-air)? volume of attendance? music videos? AWARDS?
we need also need to consider the timeline of success --> if BAND A sold millions of copies of their album in months Vs. BAND B also sold the same amount but counted decade.
can we count the underground scene?
well most of the bands mentioned're really great
if the thread is about personal answer --->
eto mga babad sa aming mumunting karaoke cassette player noong 90's (AS IN BABAD)
cassette na pinagpasapasahan
--> re-record sa double deck na player basta lumabas na sa LA105
---> naka play lang ang C-90 na tape hanggang matapos ang programa
---> then manual cropping ng kanta
---> record ulit

Gary Perez and the boys of Anak Bayan were just brought in to be a backing band for Sampaguita. I don't know but
YMMV. I do count Sampaguita (band) works to be among OPM's best imo

eheads
-
Wolfgang and Razorback.

-
imo, Juan Dela Cruz laid the groundwork of pinoy rock.
and im willing to take NAIA bullets for that statement.
