good to know that JB is trying to keep up with the trend in international markets--a lot of drummers love to mix and match hats actually, zildjian i think was the first to capture this certain nouveau preference of drummers by releasing K-Z, A-Z...most common pairings i see over here is bottom ng A custom mastersound with K custom top or A new beat top plus A custom mastersound bottom meron din new beat top plus bottom ng aax fusion and paiste signature top with z custom dyno bottom...this goes to show that drumming really has no boudaries just so one would attain his most desired sound...rules are meant to be bent...dont worry there is no drum police out there who will catch non-conformist to common practice.

^Z Customs are the ones Tommy Lee uses, right? and i see a lot of rock/metal/punk drummers who use Z Customs. pang rock yun siguro noh?
Ikaw lang makakasagot nyan. Try out all cymbals and find what sounds best to YOU. There is no such thing as "pangit" sounding naman e. It just sounds different. I personally hate Z Custom Cymbals but that's me, it doesn't mean na pangit sya, other people might like it too.
It's all about personal preference! :-)

Pero para sa akin, hybrid crashes & session crashes are "safer" crashes (can be used in more types of music), while ang dark crashes, namimili.totoo ung about dark crashes, iba tunog. But to be fair, magandang gawing top hat. lupet ng sound. it was an 14" HH dark crash over a stock pearl hat bottom... ganda ng tunog, para sa akin...
wow, talagang nasasapawan na ng sabain ang zildjian.. bakit ba kasi maraming bobong baguhan ang nagiisip na basta zildjian, yun na pinakamaganda? zildjian ba pinaka unang cymbals? bakit ba lintik ang popularity nun? mahal mahal di naman ganun kaganda tunog.. hindi pa ganun katibay.. its nice, but definitely not the best.. well, para sa tenga ko yun, no offense to zildjian fans out there..

Pareho lang magandang brand yan. But personally I use Sabian. I also like Zildjians, lalo na yung mga K Custom Fast Crash, A Custom Fast Crash. Pero with my skills right now, di ko pa maja-justify bumili mga ganun kamahal na cymbals. Biro mo crash lang mahigit 10K. The same with Sabians, di pa justified bumili ng HHX, AAX.
So, we go to the entry-level sets. B8 gamit ko. Anu ba katapat ng B8 sa Zildjian. ZBT diba? Halos magkapresyo sila e. B8 Pro naman is ZBT Pro dba? Just correct me if I'm wrong pero parang ganun sa palagay ko. At that price point, ewan ko kung ako lang pero mas maganda yata tunog ng B8. Well, a drummer friend agrees with me. I just don't know with others.
So ngayon parang I can't help but conclude na Sabian=More bang for the buck(?)

The Scimitar Line was the first low-end line of cymbals that Zildjian came out with. It preceded the Impulse, EDGE, ZBT, ZXT, ZHT, lines. If they are still in good condition, take care of them..
Correct me if I'm wrong bro Din but the Impulse line was considered professional cast models released 1982-1986 in response to Paiste's Rude models. I think they were the predecessor of the Z line then the Z custom we now have. :wink:

Kay sir ushuaia and sir drumster, may nabasa nga akong review about the armand zildjian series tsaka pinakingan ko yung sound niya through zildjian's website, ang ganda. Classic na classic yung sound nya. Ok sa mga nagcocover ng mga 60s and 70s music(pang-bloomfields). Anyway, meron na sya sa JB. Boxset that includes, 14" hh, 16"med thin crash, 20" ride, and 22" limited armand deluxe cymbal bag. Tinanong ko kung mgkano nsa 47k-48k, price na ng isang dru kit with cymbals. Hinde kaya ng budget pero if your into classic songs and if you really love to sound like it, pagiipunan mo talaga to. Share lng, tnx po. :-)

Mga tsong! Natry nyo naba yung Armand Series Cymbals? It's the recreation of Armand's favorite sounds from the 70's. I had the opportunity to test it. Well It's thinner than the Regular A's but very distinct sound. Mas Warmer with shimmering sound. Si Carter Beauford yun ang bagong favorite niya.

I'm surprised that most of us na sanay with cast cymbals would automatically say they sound bad. In my oppinion they may not be great cymbals but good enough for the price.+1000! :-D
The only thing i really dislike about most low/mid end (crash) sheet cymbals is you'll have to whack it pretty hard to make it sing unlike compared sa cast na mas mabilis mag open up/ respond kahit meduim hit lang. I think this also the reason kung bakit mas mabilis din sila masira dahil parating pinapalo ng malakas para lang tumunog ng mas maganda (not necesarily mas malakas) .

Additional comment lang.........If you look at the prices above hindi mo na rin masasabi they come cheap. So a good option if you don't mind getting second hand is looking patiently through the classifed section for great deals.
Kelan lang i recall a super great deal ng 20" Avedis Medium Ride mint condition w/free 18" China for only P4,000 which a co forumer (wax_static >congrats sayo) bought. You can't get any better deal than that. :evil:
Importante lang parati ka may hawak pambili so when the oppurtunity comes you're prepared. Kasi parang Barilan din yan pabilisan ang laban and "Just Like in any Gunfight There are No Second Place Winners Only Dead Loosers".
Lastly in case you decide to buy second hand it's very important that you interview the seller so you have an idea kung saan or pano ba ginagamit yung item nya.

There's still an ongoing discussion about the durability issues of the thickness of a cymbal... Yung iba sabi mas tumatagal yung mga makakapal dahil nga daw makapal nga, pero yung iba ang sabi mas flexible daw yung maninipis kasi pag hinampas mo parang sumasabay lang dun sa stick hindi lumalaban tulad ng makakapal...

i'm looking for a washy ride that would complement for my 18" k dark thin crash.
any insights on this ride? does it wash closely like a K custom dark ride?

may pre-aged K ako (ginagamit ko as main crash, kaso dati pang light ride din). washy siya kaso di nawawala yung "tah-tah-tah" niya. ayus yung ride, woody stick sound with dark wash, solid bell, powerful crash.
I have the K custom dark ride and I had played the pre-aged dry light ride. The pre-aged has that airy wash as described by plep as "tah tah tah" The ping is woodier sounding than the dark ride. The dark ride however has a slightly shimmery ping although still woody sounding to an extent. The wash is also warm though not as airy. I think the pre-aged will work well with traditional jazz. The K custom dark ride is more of a "modern" type of jazz sound. Considering that "modern" sound, the dark ride somewhat sounds brighter.
yep maganda analysis ni sir wipeout. mas litaw yung stick sound ng k custom dark. di ko sasabihing "bright" per se yung k custom, brighter lang siya kumpara sa pre-aged k. mas defined ang stick sound at mas mataas ang pitch niya, lalo na sa bell. tsaka di kasing smooth yung crash ng kc dark sa pre-aged k.

well, new beats are designed to handle just about everything. and if i'm not mistaken, freese used new beats when he was still with zildjian.

Well, the new beats are okay. I think Freese used Ks based on what I read on a Modern Drummer issue. That's why when he switched to Paiste, he wanted to still get that K sound. Maybe kulang lang sa pagka-dark yung new beats. Pero I would really love to hear the 15" New Beats. Dream ko talaga yung 15"s. Thanks, sir.
Paiste would actually get him well away from the K sound. he uses Signatures, which are actually brighter than A's.
subukan mo ginawa ko... i got a different top for my New Beats. I had a cracked 18" K Dark Crash Med Thin, had it cut down to 14", and I now use it as my top hihat. darker overall, smoother and fuller when open, more crisp and defined when closed. you could go the same route and get a 14" K or K Custom top (maybe even trade your New Beat top for one)

I am not totally disagreeing with your points here, pero for some reason, otherwise yung nangyari sa akin. Ngayon ko lang nadiskubre ganda ng Scimitar Bronze 20" Ride ko na more or less ten years or so na ata sa akin. I didn't know that it has a better wash than A Medium Ride. A few years back iritado ako sa overtones niya na walang focus at parang sobrang bright.
Ngayon parang tama na lang yung brightness at ang ganda niya for crashing. Pinging has gotten better, too, kasi nawala 'yung unwanted overtones niya.
Splendid. Made me delay buying an A Sweet Ride.

Nalito lang ako... Hahaha.. Antok na ako nung nag post ako... Hahaha...2 main crashes ko Z Custom (18" Medium, 18" Rock). They're bright and really cutting. Durability is also one of its assets. I also love how it sounded with recording. We've been recording for the past months and I've been pretty satisfied with the outcome. Panalo rin siya in a live setting. :-)

AFAIK the Zildjian AMIR line was an entry level line made of B8.... so if you are a fan of B8 cymbals i think "OK" tunog nito for you. Na try ko lang kasi was their crash, too bright for my taste. :wink:ahh ok d ako fan ng b8 haha thanks bro! :lol:

i'm no expert but I suggest na pumunta ka sa mga music store to personally try out their entry level cymbals para malaman mo ang tunog. Personal preference kasi yan when choosing cymbals, para may idea ka kung ano tunog nila. Next step, try searching the classifieds for used cymbals na pasok sa budget mo. hth

JJ ang simula ng serial number kaya 2000 ginawa ito (J = 10th letter of the alphabet, so ang JJ = 00 = 2000).
ang problema lang e pareho malaki ang bell ng sweet ride at rock ride. yung 2001 ko na catalog, hindi na labelled as "new" ang sweet ride e, so malamang in production na siya nung 2000.
so i guess kailangan mo malaman gaano kabigat yung ride na yan? kung around 2.5kg, sweet ride. kung around 3kg, rock ride.
I think ito yung ranking, well, pati narin sa price ito yung ranking. :-D

Sirs! I recently got my 20' K Custom Medium Ride. (Thanks sir stick!) I am absolutely satisfied, ang lupet nung wash! I just want to know your take and opinion on this cymbal. Okay lang ba i-CrashRide itong cymbal in terms of durability and sound? I'm not a heavy hitter, pero hindi ako sanay sa K eh, I've broken a Dark Thin K Crash way before, so gusto ko na talaga mag-ingat ngayon and know how to properly use this cymbal.

Brad. kung crashable sound din lang.. i suggest you get a larger crash na pwede mong bugbogin, like 20, 19 or 18 crashes... then stick to the ride as it is... as a ride...

It took me 8 years to crack. meron akong A custom na crash. It took me 3 years to crack. yung avedis medium thin ko, 4 years to crack. pero sabi nga nila, heavier cymbals crack faster... :?

Hehehe. Di naman tinapalang ZBT, pero pareho sila ng ZHT na B12. Mas matibay sila at mas musical kesa sa B8 alloy ng ZBT (pero depende sa tenga siyempre).
Pero naisip ko rin yun tinapalan kasi parang halos pareho lathing patterns at hammer marks ng ZBT at Pitch Black.
I think di pa naman pulled out. Nasa website pa nila. Pero I am quite convinced they should. Malimit rin siyang mabili kahit dito sa atin.

I found na mas Ok ung Z Custom even on Medium Volume Setting..ung Z3 talagang For Loud Volume Settings lang.sakin ok yun z3.. sayang sakin mo sana binenta sir...sa obserbasyon ko depende sa amount ng pagpalo ng cymbals at sa lugar mo pinalo,full bodied tunog kasi ng mga zs pang metal talaga malakas.. at para sa mga hard hitters kun tibay usapan...

hey bro.. just wanna ask if you've tried the sweet ride in a recording situation? i had a 22" k custom medium ride and was pleased with it when played live; but it's too deep and won't cut through in the recording.. i swapped it with a 20" k custom ride (brilliant finish) and it sounds good in the record, but for me, it's too small (20") in a live situation.. now, i'm having thoughts on buying a sweet ride (21"), do you recommend it on recording too? senxa na, im from cebu.. i don't speak much tagalog..
thanks for the reviews brothers... i think i'll go for med thin-kcus ride this time, i prefer a ride that is light weight (makalansing) coz mahina ako pumalo, so i want a ride na mabilis ang response plus im using 17"k dark thin crash and i guess thats a good combination of ride and crash... to Sir jckazs, with great respect po, i had a Kcus medium ride, but for me, parang kapos ang kalansing sa riding pero ok naman sa bell, di ako na-satisfied thats why binenta ko. For K ride, ok sana riding but like Sir glennaui said, its not as good as Kcus when it comes to crashability coz medium ang weight... maybe i'll have them both after kcus (as if kaya pa ng bulsa) hehe tooo expensive... anyway thanks again, saludo po ako mga Sir...
err kung mahina ka pumalo wag k custom dark ride ha or light weight rides. mas mahina yun at washy kesa sa k cus medium ride pero crashable. kung gusto mo ng kalansing, try avedis or a custom kaya lang since makalansing sila, hindi ka makakakuha ng magandang crash sound sa mga yun. trade off talaga

Try ko lang sir hehe. Ito yung mga naexperience ko ng gamitin sa gig jan sa list niyo.
A Custom Crash - Very bright and cutting! Clean sounding too. Normal lang yung decay and it's responsive naman on how hard or how soft you hit it. It blends quite well with the music but has just enough attack to cut through.
A Custom Proj. Crash - Compared to the regular AC Crashes, these standout more and are louder. Very bright! They're thicker which means mas matagal decay niya and nawala ng konti yung responsiveness pag compared sa AC Crash pero ayos parin! Kung medyo maingay mga amps at malalakas mga guitars sa band mo mas ok ito gamitin. As the name says, it's meant for 100% projection.
K Custom Dark Crash - Very beautiful sounding crash. It won't cut through the distortion as much pero napaka-musical ng crash na ito. You get dark overtones which are nice to hear on quieter sets. Pwede ring pang rock pero mas bagay talaga siya sa hindi sobrang maingay na tugtugan.
I hope this helps. Mas oks talaga kung mapapakinggan mo in person or sa mga youtube videos though. :-D

All rides mentioned are good imo but I'd go for the K ride if I were you...
Got the chance to own all of the rides mentioned - K Custom dark, K Custom Medium and K regular. All three are crashable (the kc dark wins in the crashability department because of it's weight. The KC Med and K regular are both crashable as well. Just louder and less musical as a crash). Would have kept all, but just couldn't afford to do so
My take on these cymbals
K Custom Dark Ride -- High pitched clean stick sound -- almost Paiste like. Washy...but its wash is not that complex / trashy sounding.
Contrary to it being called a dark ride, it's not that dark compared to other med thin Ks / K Customs. Might get lost in the mix if used in loud rock music
Wanted a ride that had a bit more stick definition. Traded my KC dark ride with a:
K Custom Medium Ride -- High pitched stick with low vol. undertones. A bit drier and more pingy than the KC Dark
Found the KC medium a bit too high pitched for my taste. Sold it then bought a:
K Ride -- Low pitched, woody stick sound. Dry...minimal low pitched wash
...which I eventually sold because I needed money. Wouldn't think twice about getting another k ride though...

I JUST BOUGHT A ZILDJIAN SET 2ND HAND, THE RIDE HAS ZILDJIAN LOGO BUT NO STAMP SEAL, HOWEVER THE HIHAT HAS NO ZILDJIAN LOGO AND NO STAMP SEAL, HOWEVER THE TEXTURE OF THE HAT AND THE RIDE MATCHES. THE ROUND THINGY (DIMPLES) AT THE INTERIOR SIDE OF THE CYMBAL IS THE SAME WITH THE HAT AND THE RIDE AS FAR AS THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THEM IS CONCERNED.
The sound of the hat is very good , like of the vintage types. though the hat is not that heavy, but the 20" ride is.
I really dont know what type of hi hat this is. I dont even know if this is zildjian. and what model. I decided to seek guidance from the masters of this thread so that I would be enlightened. Any information coming from you masters would be extremely appreciated to the highest and most respectable level. Thanks , God bless and more power.

Armand set is good. Pwede naman bro na itry mo mag add paisa isa kung pasok talaga sa genre mo. I'm not sure if Armand crashes would cut into metal stuffs.AFAIK, if you want real LOUD, "pangwasak tenga" cymbals for metal, the Z series (Z3 na yata ngayon) are what you want.

you play rock and "heavier" stuff? go with the k/z. it will cut through the mix with ease compared to the hybrids. with that being said, i'll still take the hybrids over the k/z any day of the week. :-D
K/Z if you'll go for metal and heavier stuffs.for the 13" hats, i'll use it for the non-rock stuff.. but that's a quick 2 points for the hybrids!!
But def. I'll pick the Hybrid, IMO it's sound is very clean both live and studio/recording.

It's just a matter of preference between the 2 including Zxt, for me they all share a choked characteristic; they don't compare to the higher cast models.

reinramirez: the medium crash is thicker, louder, and has more sustain. the thin crash opens up faster but has less sustain.
An "all-around" 3-piece A Zildjian setup would be

2) 20" Medium Ride, or 21" Sweet Ride
3) 18" Medium-Thin or Thin crash

I've been checking out the new 2013 A's recently. The 23" sweet ride is fantastic. Wonderful smooth mid wash with a nice gentle ping. The 17" medium-thin is also veeeeeeery nice. Bright with lots of complex overtones in the top end. I ended up getting a 2013 A Zildjian Thin Crash 18". 1330 grams on my kitchen scale. Saktong katambal ng 1970s A 16" thin crash ko. Bright, light, opens up real fast, and decays moderately. Just perfect for me since I don't hit really hard. I'm sure 2013 will be remembered as a vintage year for A's. Everyone who complained that Zildjian lost their way starting in the 80s can shut up now.

I had my first k custom dark crash 18" back in 2006, then binenta ko eventually after that year. now bumili ako ulit pero parang di ako ganun ka satisfied sa sound compared to my first one... and napansin ko mas lumaki ung bell nya at ang sound is more of dark na lang and low tones, parang nawala ung shimmering sound even if its dark ganun ko kasi siya i-describe eh... ears ko ba ang may prob or inconsistent ang production nila, feeling ko tuloy fake yung nakuha ko... pls i need your thoughts fellow drummers and experts... here is the serial number JF 48829 007 and pls paki translate ang year ng production... thanks

If you really want to add dark sounds to your line,go to k customs,they tend brighten up
If you hit it loud, I heard a band use just the k line,not the custom one,they sound awful.
Check the flo mournier,not sure of the spelling,he's using some cymbals of the HHx line of
Weckl in his setup.i guess it's just ears.
Before anything else, Im currently using a Planet Z set since 2006 :cry: didnt care much for cymbals til now. And Ive checked out the 2 cymbals you mentioned, even the sabians from the mycymbal videos (?) . I found out that the ride im using is the gongiest, heck, the whole set is effin gongy.
I liked the cymbals you both mentioned but I still hear sounds Im not comfortable with or I guess its just not my cup of tea (Keep in mind that I still know nothing compared to you guys). I ended up comparing A Crash Ride and K Crash Ride (both 20") and tried to pick out their "flavors". I know that A's sound bright and K's sound warm. I noticed that the K had more wash into but the A had more ting or ping sound when riding.
Now I just wanted to see if Im on the right track, if Im hearing things like you guys. Am I making sense? :eek:

Yup you are correct, if you want the one that's in the middle,wash and ridedabillity or May Ping,check this 3 a sweet ride,a medium ride or maybe projection ride,and k ride or k heavy ride.

Il describe what I hear on my rides,
K custom dark ride- wash and ping,in between cymbal for me,can be rock or jazz.
K custom ride- would go for z custom,pero I like dark undertones so I choose k.ping sounding gong type
K custom dark complex ride 2-my jazz to death ride with complex tones more of a wash type build
All are twenty inches

These are crashable rides alright. and all very versatile!
If I had to choose between the rides you've mentioned, I'd go for the 21" A Sweet Ride or the HHX Evolution. leaning more on HHX Evolution.

I've tried the 2013 23" Sweet in JB Trinoma and I like it. Its a medium-thin so it has a nice wash, and it visibly wobbles so it looks like a living creature. I think it only gets loud if you force it. But like most A Zildjians, different dynamics result in not only differences in loudness, but timbre as well. I'd get it in a heartbeat, but I already have a 1970s 22" A Medium Ride which I love to bits.
The guy was looking for a crashable ride,since it's a big size you need some weight to open it up more compared to the smaller version of it and it wobbles,hehe,Kung di ko iniisip ang pera bibili ako niya. At pag na bore ako sa Bahay hahampasin ko lang Siya kasi nakakatuwa mag wobble yung ride,hehe
+1. more force to open it up. Hence, more volume. not advisable for small bar gigs. hahaha

I don't know about you guys, but I think the 2013 A's with the new logo are killer. My thin crash 18" goes great with all my early 70s A's.
quick beats are less choked than k/z but it will be better if you can test side by side before you make a decision.
I just came from JB Trinoma, which received a set of Zildjian Keropes this morning. We took the cymbals out of their wrappers and set them up on the demo drum set. The set is composed of 18”, 19”, 20” and 14” hats. They have no types (crash, ride, etc) and only have weights in grams written under the bell. They are a shade browner than the usual B20s, and fingerprints don’t show.
They sound very different from anything else I have heard from American Zildjians. They sound less bright but with more “body” than regular Ks, K Customs, and K Cons. The bells are tiny, and the profile is relatively shallow. They are not loud, but are very complex. Foreign reviews say that they are very inconsistent. So trying before buying is essential. If you find one that sings to you, get it immediately.
The 19” was too stiff for my taste, and did not open up too much. The 18” was nice and mellow, with more dark complexity than the K Con next to it. The hihat was special. It’s like what you hear in oldskool lo-fi samples used in HipHop. If I had a rap or traditional jazz gig, this would be perfect. But the star of this set was the 20”. It was 1836gms, which would make it about medium thin. It rides like a vintage Turkish K, crashes like the surf hitting the shore, opens up beautifully with mallets, and the bell has a gentle but rich ping. If I was forced to use only one cymbal, this would be it.
They are so new that JB have no prices yet. AFAIK, Keropes are slightly cheaper than K Cons in the US. But the guys in JB think they will be more expensive. I’ll have to save A LOT to afford one of these by Christmas.
I read somewhere that the new Kerope line can sound like the old K Zildjians. I wonder how true it is. And also still not sure if it actually involves actual hand hammering

nag-effort pa kasi maging "digital age" buti na lang nalabas sila ng mga Kerope kahit sobrang mahal (na sana pinambili mo na lang ng Bosphorus hahaha) and of course the L80 series na di hamak namas practical use ng gen16 tech. in terms of the "digital age" thing, IMO Pearl hit it square with triggers that fit in their own shells, plus yung brain pwede mo i-flash ng Toontrack samples for computer-less awesome sounds.

I have a 22 Dark Medium ride. Napansin ko Lang may nag crack sa grooves ng cymbal. You can barely see it. Anyone here experienced that? Company defect Ba yun?
if you got it new, yes it's probably a defect, as it would take tons of heavy-handed crashes to crack a medium ride. even more so kung regular riding lang tapos nagcrack na.

tama pero yung iba din tamad mag abang sa music stores at mas masipag maghanap sa online kaya nagogoyo pa din sa presyo. hehehekaya ako mas prefer ko na sa online ads (like here o sa ibang online second hand shops) maghanap ng items, actually ang diperensya lang naman nya compare sa bago is just fingerprints. mas marami ap ngang rare na cymbals ang individual sellers.

not really. dadaanan mo talaga yung search na yan at least once sa buong drumming life mo. oo mauuwi ka rin sa crash para sa crash riding pero ienjoy mo na lang yung paghahanap mo.
kung crashes gagamitin mo for crash riding, generally medium weight kunin mo para mahaba sustain at mag wash ng tuloy tuloy sa next hit. karamihan kasi ng thin/fast maiksi sustain pero eto mga favorite ko na washy cymbals na thin:
1. 18 a custom fast crash (thin to pero mahaba wash)
2. 18 k custom trash smash - thin din pero maingay talaga
