Let's talk about Mr. Vai here...What's your favorite song, what vai song did you learn to play first?, and anything that you'd like to share or talk about vai...
I'll go first i think my favorite vai piece will be Tender Surrender First song that i learned to play first is For The Love Of God. :-D

Hey Bro!!!
For the Love of God! The first time I heard the tune was from a guy who played guitar in River maya. His name is Perf de Catsro. He lend me the "Tape" (sorry ha...hindi pa masyadong uso ang CD nuon eh :-D). I always gets attracted to good solos..but man, Vai can evoke some deeper feelings in you once you hear his licks! I never did hear anything after Passion and Warfare but at least the notes of the song lasted me through these years...until recently...I ventured into You Tube. LO and behold...Vai together with an Orchestra and the very first time I heard, "Lotus Feet"...(hanep!!!) ang galing bro!!!
man, the notes that goes through his brain is connected to something Divine!
He admits that he is a spiritual person and he does meditate! somehow that explains something to where he gets his Inspiration!
Yun lang! :-D

first time i heard vai was the first time i saw him...
the movie "crossroads" as the devil's guitar player , jack butler.
but even before that, naririnig ko na sya sa david lee roth band...but wala akong alam sa gitara noon at mahilig lang ako makinig ng music sa radio.
"passion and warfare" will always be my favorite vai album.
i would only dream about learning his songs, it would take a whole career to completely get his technique down.
i learned a lot from his 10 hour workout in guitar world. and his articles from guitar player, would help my insight. he is a genius.
the only song/solo i was able to learn would be "eugene's trick bag" from the movie crossroads. all his other songs would be too hard for me to learn.

I was introduced to vai's music by my elder brother. The first song i heard from him was the Yankee Rose when he was yet with the David Lee Roth Band. The song's intro is very unique and genius, only a guitar wizard could do that. The first song I learned was Warm Regards, and it took me a century to nail it :-D. And yes my fave is of course FTLOG. I just really love vai's nuances.

the first vai song that i learned was CRYING MACHINE. firegarden kasi ang unang vai record na nakuha ko.. inaral ko rin yung aching hunger,warm regards,dyin day,.. then my friend gave me his casette tape of alien love secrets.. that album became my favorite among his albums. i learned tender surrender pero ang hirap nung last part!!!!!! tapos yung pinakapaborito ko na boy from seattle... again, mahirap na naman yung last part!!!!!! hahaha... ang lupet ni vai.. unique ang tonality..

Passion and Warfare in the late 80s early 90s. I was listening to Vai and Satch really. Didn't learn any songs from him but was heavily listening to his music and got influenced by him.
Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey soundtrack...... Vai lahat yung mga air guitar parts....really cool stoner movie.
10 hour workout also helped me when I was still buying guitar mags.... awesome guitar player.

there was a time, noong nag sisimula pa lang akong maggitara ay araw-araw kong ginagawa. i don't think it was flawless, pero nakaka-loko ng ibang gitarista.....
eventually, i just realized na mas gusto kong sariling style ko na lang kesa manggaya ako----hehe, palusot ibig sabhin nun talagang nahirapan akong kumopya ng solo ni steve vai.

di ako pwedeng mawala dito, im a big fan of Steve Vai... i'd say for now, the one i like would be The Attitude Song... he has lots of good songs, its hard to choose that one ultimate song that i like... first song i learned? what else, For The Love of God but up to now, di ko pa buo... my fingers aint that fast to do the middle part... :-D

Huge Vai fan here! I'm a fan of his music and character! He's the true guitar hero! Grabe mga live performances niya, madadala ka talaga. Favorite ko yung Alien Love Secrets, lalo na yung DVD nito. Of all his songs, Tender Surrender talaga ang favorite ko.

Mangilan-ilang GW ko yung walang CD-rom pero yung kay Vai and Satch Oct 07 Issue yata yun eh... meron din ako mga issues na mey CD-Rom baaka trip mo din BTW from tondo ako dude ikaw?
i'm glad na madaming Vai fans dito, nagtataka lang ako bakit wala pang gumagawa nang thread eh(or hindi ko lang nakikita, i tried searching pero nada), so gumawa nako...Sana magkaron nang EVO Experience dito sa pinas noh hehehe(ASA PA!)...

Tender Surrender! first song na nagustuhan ko sa kaniya.. and kahit after pakinggan ko ng malalim yung tracks niya, bumabalik pa rin ako tender surrender... kaya lang hindi ko makumpleto pagdating sa sweep :-(...waahhh...someone teach me please.. :-D

for the love of god is the first 1 i learned to play.... 2nd is the audience is listening and the 3rd 1 is tender surrender... gusto ko din yung blue powder... yun yung huli kong natutunan...

First kong narinig si Vai kay David Lee Roth kasama nya pa si Billy Sheehan na bilib ako kasi parehas silang malufet tas si Steve Vai nakita ko rin sa White Snake ang lufet! tapos un na bumili na ako ng mga tape ni Vai "Passion & Warfare" wala pa atang CD non :) meron cguro hindi lang ako aware kasi bihira pa ang CD player non de pa ako nag guguitar non tamang sounds lang galing si Vai the best.

yung nagbebenta nito e yung mamang may nakalatag na dvd na puro concerts sa sidewalk ng northbound lane. pumupwesto sya dun ng hapon hanggang gabi. tumingin ako uli dun may visual sound theory pa rin akong nakita. malamang sa malamang meron sa quiapo nito pero pahirapang hanapin. P40 lang ang bili ko! :-D
btw, @j3yps, astig yung mga gears mo. jem7 saka ovation custom lx. magkakaganito rin ako balang araw. :-D

I saw Steve Vai last December here in Sydney with Dweezil. It's not a vai concert but a tribute concert to the late Frank Zappa (Zappa Plays Zappa). Steve Vai showed up in the middle till the end of the concert. My eyes were glued to his hands and evo's fretboard, stupid me, I forgot to even take a picture. What's amazing with Vai is that he can pull off any note, any squeal, any noise and still would sound like he really meant to play it.
I was also able to test a Jem20th in Ottawa Canada last year. It's not that great IMO. It's like an RG with an acrylic body and a monkey grip, it has the same feel like an rg2550. Maybe a bit heavier. But it's a Vai guitar :)

some good news for me:
nagpabili na ako ng Passion and Warfare CD-Songbook sa ate ko sa states. Makukuha daw nila yun within 10 days.
the bad news:
di pa makakapunta todits sa pinas 'yun until early next year kasi dun pa lang madadala yun papunta dito. :cry:
sobrang mahal kasi ng shipping. Sabi sakin e $90 daw yun. E $25 lang yung actual item. Pero gusto ko na talaga makita yung songbook. oh well, magtitiyaga na lang ako sa inemail na scanned na songbook. tapos aaralin ko na seryoso yung for the love of god. hehehe....

merong song si vai na more than 10 minutes long... nakalimutan ko yung title, di ko mahagilap yung CD ko.. pero may figure na "7" yung title eh... so far, sa lahat ng napakinggan kong solos, e2 ang pinaka "musical" (though I'm not much of a vai fan)

depende sa kanta. sa level ni vai as a guitarist, e malamang kabisado nya halos lahat ng mode and scale sa gitara. at makikita sa mga kanta nya yun.
pero pag-naaral mo na yung mga kanta ni vai, marerealize mo na very systematic naman yung mga ginagamit nya.
for example, yung 'for the love of god' e nasa Em chords na nasa G major scale. Not quite accurate pero around ganun yun.

The commitment it takes to become an elite virtuoso guitarist is not unlike that required to become a champion in any other field. You must think, breathe, eat and live the instrument at virtually every waking moment (and even while sleeping, when possible). You must transcend the games your mind will play on you and the excuses it will give you to lay off and take the easy road. You must continue to bring back the focus to the instrument. You may find yourself harshly criticized by other music community people, or friends, magazines and those that hang around on Sunset Boulevard obsessing over the nuances of the latest trends. This is precisely the time when you need to fearlessly stick to your vision. There are tests along the way. Realize that it’s all in the mind, and never accept failure when dealing in things that are within your ability to control.
Keep a positive outlook on things and don’t let your intensity turn you in a prick. Always compliment and support your fellow musicians. We all have dreams and hopes. By encouraging, complimenting and supporting those around us, we gain self-dignity, respect, friends, a healthy overview of our own work and an appreciation for the efforts that others put in during our struggles.
It’s okay to get discouraged at times, but it’s not okay to quit. Quitting is never an option for true a artist. It’s jus not in their makeup. Think of music and the guitar when you’re not even around an instrument. If you’re in a quiet setting, imagine that you’re playing and try to see your fingers moving while you’re listening to what’s happening in your head. You can get better at this as time goes by. It’s unbelievably rewarding and it can help you improve drastically because you’re not confined by your physical limitations. I used to do this all the time, and I still do. I imagine things on the instrument that I can’t do, and then I work on them until I can do them effortlessly.
There are those who believe that God is manifest in everything, in the form of light and sound. Some believe that that light and sound need to be discovered by each of us personally and alone. This could be why we are so fond of music. Creating music just by “willing” it in your head may eventually lead to just listening to it happen in your head. Who is the composer is and where the music takes you are for you to discover.
I think being a musician and being able to play an instrument is about the coolest thing in the world. Creating music (and especially playing the guitar) is most rewarding when it’s based on pure passion. Its our birthright to play an instrument an to create.

yup. one more thing i like about vai is he is very open about his thoughts on music na di mo nakikita normally sa ibang artist.
The part I like most is "quitting is never an option for a true artist"
I admit na at times talaga we have to do other important things in life pero for a true artist, laging nandun pa rin yun art/passion nya.
btw, plug ko yung ginawa kong instrumental rock track. Lost Soul. Highly inspired by the one and only Steve Vai. :-D
natapos ko na rin sa wakas. daming sablay na part yung lead saka mga compromised notes. pero ok naman yung 2nd half so in-export ko na sa recording software ko as a mastered track. Peace, Love and Rakenrol!

Before a tour, you rehearse 6 days a week for 10 hours. Of course with breaks.
Then the touring becomes more compelling. Steve is a perfectionist. No fishing for notes. He wants things as they were at rehearsal. I remember Mike Mangini in one clinic he did here; he said Steve's regimen is way too much work. Kind of takes the fun out of playing. And Steve Vai himself commented on that... the schedule kind of *damaged* him (Mike Mangini).

totoo yan sir.. i saw an article of mangini, virgil donati and phil bynoe on the internet..don't know kung reliable ba talaga.. that they quoted that 'playing with vai sometimes takes out the enjoyment.." napaka razor egded type musician ni vai...ewan ko kung tama ako ah.. the first G3 concert "satch, johnson and vai" has an VCD and DVD package.. i think that was shoot on november 96..basta the first G3..yung VCD and DVD cd eh magkaibang shoot.. syempre magkaiba ng date.. sa track ni satch eh mahahalata mo na iba lalo na dun sa cool #9.. pati kay johnson, yung sa mga songs niya.. yung kay vai, men if im not mistaken.. he throw the same notes in both VCD and DVD package CD.. napansin ko yun kasi i got a G3 tape, cassette pa.. magkaiba na yung solos sa G3 jam nung sa tape at pinanuod kong VCD.. pero dun sa set ni vai, kasi G3 e 3 individual set and the final jam set diba.. dun sa set ni vai, parehong pareho yung notes sa VCD and DVD.. pati yung dun sa ending ng for the love of god, yung etude na feedbacks and delays, mismo..hehehe...

He surely is a great guitarist. I like "For the Love of God" and "Tender Surrender" so much and the way he structure his songs is superb.
Pero parang may tendency na halos pareho-pareho ang style nya sa music. it's just me ha.

He surely is a great guitarist. I like "For the Love of God" and "Tender Surrender" so much and the way he structure his songs is superb.
Pero parang may tendency na halos pareho-pareho ang style nya sa music. it's just me ha.
yup, i think dahil sa yun nga yung signature na tunog niya. di naman ata tutugtog si vai ng "tender surrender" saka "bad horsie" then sabay banat ng jazz pagkatapos. hehe. oo nga, pwede ibahin ng artist ang tugtog niya. pero it's a choice that he/she would make. for master vai, he likes to stick to his own style. that's how i understand him and his music. :wink:

steve vai will always sound like steve vai. hindi naman nya pwedeng gayahin ang style ni ej for the sake na maiba nama ang ginagawa nya. and if you will really listen to him, napakalawak ng musicality nya. listening to vai from album to another, lagi namang may bago syang ginagawa. compare alien love and firegarden. i really loved the firegarden suite. bangis!!

steve vai will always sound like steve vai. hindi naman nya pwedeng gayahin ang style ni ej for the sake na maiba nama ang ginagawa nya. and if you will really listen to him, napakalawak ng musicality nya. listening to vai from album to another, lagi namang may bago syang ginagawa. compare alien love and firegarden. i really loved the firegarden suite. bangis!!
tama ka dyan! i was just listening to some fire garden tracks (genocide and warm regards) a while ago. galing talaga ni vai! :-D magada rin yung line-up sa "Alive In An Ultra World" na album niya.

Nung bata ako halos araw araw ko siyang pinapakingan. Thankful ako inaral ko siya dahil nagagamit ko siya sa madaming kanta. Lalo na yung mga melodic lines niya and yung feel niya pag pinapakanta niya yung mga notes. Sobrang usefull pag sa mga solo sa Pop. Mismo talaga si Steve Vai! Kahit di ko na siya masyado napapakingan ngayon siya parin ultimate guitar hero ko! :-)

agree ako sa'yo dude. Hybrid and personalized TS9+DS1 nga yung description nila sa jemini. i think it sounds the real and same thing as in the demo video. saka siguro mas ok na rin kay Vai na magkaroon ng sarili niyang personalized distortion pedal.

it's a super book! Super Tabs and Scores of the whole album including multiple guitar tracks tab, bass lines, chords, etc... sobrang astig yung foreword ni Vai. sinama din nya yung mga gear na gamit nya sa recording ng album. asteg din yung mga artworks ng tracks. :-D
i also got my original copy of Visual Sound Theories in DVD! it's an extra that my sister gave me, i wish Alien Love Secrets Album CD na lang sana...oh well :-P
next thing on the list is the Jem! :-D :-D :-D sana ok na funds ko by the end of the year.

lol, i went to GC to try the jemini sounds like two DS1's glued together, saturation was really near ds1 or a maxon pedal i cant remember, i plugged it thru a peavey dont know the model,

Steve Vai! Ibang klase ang style, and somehow mas "buhay" ang shred music nya, compared sa ibang G3'ers. To top it all off, ang galing pa ng showmanship / stage presence nya, sarap panoorin. Baka trip nyo bumili nung naked tracks hati hati tayo, tapos share nalang natin sa isat-isa for example bilin ko yung Volume 1 tapos yung iba bibili nung Volume 2,3,4 and 5 tapos palitan nalang tayo...what do you guys think?

Sa Amazon bro! $7.99 lang isang Volume!, pili ka nalang nang bibilin mo sa Volumes 2-5 kasi meron na ako nung Volume 1 eh palitan nalang tayo... :-D
IMO mas ok na bumili tayo then magshare nalang tayo, parang sukli nalang natin yun sa hirap/efforts ni Vai sa pagproduce nung mga Naked Tracks.... :-D
that's the nice way bro. i got my Tender Surrender n.t. by asking my sister in the states to buy and email me this specific track.
about dun sa volume ... i'll pass. :-D i don't have the luxury to study and learn to play Vai songs nowadays. :-P :-P :-P

well i wanna give a new twist on this thread..talking about "your own depiction" of steve vai tone..
ika nga if you feel that you've got it, baka pwede niyo naman share yung ginawa niyo at naexperience niyong tone recipe for this..
the guitar that you are using, hardware configurations, the pedals you are using, your amp.. and the way you tweak things up...
in my experience kasi, i never experienced or extract in my own yung tone ni vai eh..maybe i really lack equipment..
well im just inspired kasi eh..coz one time i've been in the dayo bar at betty go belmonte.. i was amazed with a band playing rage against the machine cover songs.. well bata pa yung guitarist,, he's using a starter pack ibanez GIO model guitar..yung look alike strat.. and the effect he's using is a Zoom 707..
he really nail the setting of his effects.talagang pinalagyan din niya ng killswitch yung guitar niya..tho its not 100% xerox copy of the tone, the character is there eh..
so ngayon naisip ko na baka pwede natin ihalintulad itong example mentioned above on how to get the vai tone.. pati para na din makakuha ako ng idea..

Sensiya na bro ngayon ko lang nakita to. Sa SM Megamall. I'm not sure sa name ng mag store pero malapit siya sa Toy Kingdom and Functional. Dun ko nakukuha yung mga latest issues lagi. May CM, FutureMusic, Hammer, Guitar, Guitar World etc. dun. Latest lahat. Regular yung dating ng issues.

Get an Ibanez guitar (doesn't have to be a JEM or UV) with a Floyd Rose. Get some Dimarzio Evolution pickups, or for early Vai stuff get Dimarzio Blaze pups.
Get a real nice modulation effects rack or pedal. The TC Nova or anything by Eventide works well. Don't forget the Digitech whammy.
For the amp, early Vai stuff (Crossroads, Zappa) use a Carvin XV-100. For not so early Vai stuff use a Marshall JCM 800 2205 or a JCM 900 2100 MKIII. For mid 90's Vai get a Bogner Ecstasy Classic. For latter Vai stuff get a Carvin Legacy. Use Celestion Vintage 30 speakers to enhance the sweet mids. Mic them with large diaphragm condenser mics if you record in the studio (pad them at -18dB or -20dB).
Pedals he used- mostly TS9s and DS-1s as boosters, not really where his tone comes from. That is where the Jemini's idea stemmed from.
Wahs - for early Vai stuff - he used a Dunlop Crybaby. for later stuff he used a Morley Bad Horsie. Now he uses a Bad Horsie II.
Fernandes sustainers are a good addition to get that infinite sustain...

Passion and Warfare in the late 80s early 90s. I was listening to Vai and Satch really. Didn't learn any songs from him but was heavily listening to his music and got influenced by him.
Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey soundtrack...... Vai lahat yung mga air guitar parts....really cool stoner movie.
10 hour workout also helped me when I was still buying guitar mags.... awesome guitar player.

nakabili kasi ako ng Ibanez USRG more than a month ago. its louder and punchier... the Jem sounded so sweet compared to the USRG. sabi ko hindi ako papayag maiwanan ang Jem ko so i said to myself its time for an upgrade. pero hindi dapat lalayo sa tunog ni Vai. so i bought this...
late na pala ako. sino kaya gumagawa ng ganyan frets dito sa pinas?
before lumabas ang True Temperement sa NAMM show they had it presented 1st to Fafi Steve Vai... or maybe he's one of the few musicians they've approached. He's skeptical at first but completely blown away when he realized what it can really do. Now he's having it done to all his guitars... 8-)

i'm an ultimate steve vai fanatic! marami nakong napakinggang gitarista, minsan i'm sick of listening to steve vai's music but after awhile, while searching for a new guitarist na papalit sa trono ni steve vai sa utak ko, i find none. may nadiskubre ako last year, si jack thammarat, he really plays well, malinis at aral talaga, pero iba pa rin si steve vai, i also tried to be hooked with EVH music, joe satriani, paul gilbert.. but steve vai talaga, not that i find him the most virtuoso guitarist, but his music really connects with my being. i like his skills and his flaws..

first time ko marinig si steve vai nong 1997, i was fourth year and my classmate lent me a g3 live in concert cassette tape. the cover is not inviting to listen but i tried to listen it anyway. before that, i'm a santan, van halen and jimi hendrix fan. the 1st song i heard is "answers", intro palang sabi ko highest level ng virtuosity ang taglay nitong taong ito, tapos after nung answers, my in-between guitar exhibition pa sya, mind-blowing tapping at feedback na may tono.. sabay pasok yung for the love of.. ayun na, na high nako kay steve vai since then. tapos lagi ko binibisita website nya.. wala pang youtube non..

just wanna share my story about steve vai on how he made me a musician who plays guitar.. :-)
ever since high school pa lang nag electric guitar na ako..pinaka una kong influence is kirk hamett.. sumali sa banda.. as rythm guitarist, super ban ban pa talga ako nung time na to, i dont care bout my sound or anything.. until fourth year high school.. nung nag college na ako.. i decided to go to conservatory of music, this also changed my views about music, its very complex and deep.. i left and forget about playing electric guitar, and want to focus on classical music. for two years ive been straight to classical, poured so much time practicing, and want to excel. that time im not listening to any kind of music but classical or classic jazz.. :lol: after two years, a friend of mine lend me this original CD called Alien Love Secrets by Steve Vai and said i should listen to this track Bad Horsie! and i did.. and i was like.. wow.. this became my turning point to go to a music store and look for an RG guitar! then i got my first RG320dx,this event on my life helped me to find the half part of what i really want to do..cause right now im still in the proccess of finding my own uniqueness, cause everybody has their own sound.. this friend of mine had this two orig CD, alien love secret and sex and religion, and he sold me this for only 100 php! and now ive gathered all of steve's album up to his latest dvd where the wild things are. i can tell that i know all of his song, and can identify if it was steve vai or not..well most of the time.. Funny, that i can't play any steve vai piece.. but, ive been using his licks and changing it to my own playing, this is more important to me.. i think you would say that im a very good player and know a lot about playing guitar.. No.. im not.. but im trying to be, and always want to pull out the best of me.. :-D

He was supposed to, from way back. But for some reason, the plan never materialized. The supposed visit/gig was to be held at the Hard Rock Cafe but Mr. Bert Nievera, Martin Nievera's dad, didn't allow it and so the tour was cancelled and has never come into fruition. Mr. Nievera at the time was part of the Hard Rock management I believe. This story has been circling around the local guitar community for more than a decade now.

matindi dapat ang pormahan at piyesahan...tsaka stage performance ng bawat miyembro...

just bought one of his guitars yesterday in audiophile, it took me about three weeks to hunt it down..hehe..and even though its the entry level version of its kind..im very happy with it cause its really well built and i didn't really realize how much comfortable Ibby's were..im really happy with this..i use to play on my dad's strat and that guitar would hurt my left hand so bad right after 30 mins of exercise..but i really do love the Jem cause it so comfortable reaching the higher frets..

i think it will last if you wont abuse the use..changing it to edge pro i think is a good idea but i just dont know if it would fit in your guitar.ive seen a video that the edge iii was replaced with an OFR.

That was also one of my impressions about Vai's guitar. As if there were so many things.
Later on, I understood one thing : your guitar is your instrument. It represents/reflects who you are : your imaginations, your artistry, your feelings, emotions etc.
Perhaps, Vai's guitar is an extension of himself, a mirror of his personality and musicianship, and his preferences.
Artists are free to use everything in their power to express themselves. And of course, it is his signature guitar, so he might as well put his "signature" on it.

On the contrary, i like it. Vai designed it that way. Eye catching. On the trem part, how will he do divebombs and trem flutters without it? And besides, the rg was designed as the simpler version of the jem.
The only thing that i don't like about it is the steep price tag. I still love my jem though.. :eek:

I love my Jem! It's THE design that caught my eye. Kakaiba from the rest. Maraming pick ups? Paul Gilbert ganun din kadami. Steve Morse din. Normal lang ang H-S-H config.
Ang ayoko lang sa Jem, mumurahin yung pots at 5 way switch. Hindi man lang Bourns or Switchcraft ang ginamit ng mga hapon! Pinalitan namin ni Mike (Sison) and biglang kumapal at bumuka ang tunog niya. Now I'm loving it more.

if you guys get a chance to watch him wag nyo palampasin. ang galing sobra. my wife who is not even a guitar fan was shouting and doing the horn sign :-o, and she have no idea who steve vai is before the show i always thought medyo oa yun antics nya sa stage pero mind you live, ibang iba. yun energy nya, the way he connects with the audience, that masterful guitarwork i think makes him an ultimate artist.
hearing evo live was a delight. dinig na dinig yun overtones and harmonics even with a loud bass player. at one point he switched to another white jem pero mas maganda talaga tumunog yun evo. yes may hiyaw din ang ibanez

Nakita namin si Vai sa airport, mejo masungit hahaha baka pagod. Though si Dave Wiener mabaet and accommodating. Parang walang nagiintindi sa kanila sa airport. Anyway i'm still excited for the show tomorrow and the Evo Experience, yun nakapahinga na say baka magiba na timpla hehehe

his Story of Light tour is amazing... just watched his leg here in Taipei last Sun(aug4)... i'll share a few pics later... opening act for Steve Vai was Neil Zaza.. also a great player.. he had a nice blue spiderman guitar, can't recognize the brand. coz he's movin' all over the stage. But he was asked by Mr.Vai to change to an Ibanez in their jam/impromptu composition part. ;) awesome.
