MI Audio Crunch Box - Some say it is one of the best Marshall in a box pedals. I tried it personally, and found it very fuzzy and quite frankly, it did not cut very well the way Marshalls are supposed to.
Vox Pathfinder - Very coveted, at least in the GC and B&S forums, but I don't know... they sound tinny to my ears. maybe they work very neutral with pedals but not my cup of tea...

Lovepedal Eternity Burst - a lot of people like it both as a stand alone OD or booster, etc. Known to have that "woody" tone (which I really like..but then..), actually, it's the woodiest among the Eternities. I didn't like it. Feels really cheap, too. I'd take a Digitech Hardwire CM-2 or Visual Sound Route 808 any day.
Seymour Duncan JB-Jazz - heard and read great things about them popular set.. the go-to set when changing or upgrading pickups.. only had them for a while though, instantly realized that my previous Dimarzio PAF36s would be better in every way, at least for me.

Boss TU2/3 - There are better out there at the same price range.
SD1 - Boss has made better things than that..

agree! I never liked the MT2 even back when i was younger and angrier... I use a clip on tuner as well. mas magaan :-D

I dislike the hassle of changing tubes, I dislike that it's fragile(tubes), I dislike how you have to crank it to defeaning volumes to get "the sound"
which is why I'd take an axe fx over any tube amp any day of the week ^-^

Guitars: Gibson Les Paul DC Pro – It sounded good but its neck design just wasn't for me. I suffered from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome symptoms for almost two months because of it. Sold it to Louis Isok (WilaBaliW).
Pedals: Empress Multidrive – Overhyped, in my opinion. It's versatile but doesn't have a particularly great sounding OD, distortion or fuzz. Bixonic Expandora – Again, overhyped. Average-sounding settings.
What's the moral lesson of the story? All-in-one drive pedals may offer more tones but tend to sound only mediocre to average. Application-specific drive pedals sound the best to me.

METAL ZONE! had one for just a month... it just didn't give me the extra "oomph" that i was expecting... had it swapped to a Digitech Double Play PDS 2700 (but sold it here in PhilMusic after 2 years, but it was very worth it)

Squiers (guitars and basses), can't get the action low enough without em' buzzing all over the neck especially the higher frets.

Fulltone OCD - It sounded fizzy to me. The Barber Direct Drive was much much more amp-like.
Sansamp GT2 - I have to admit this one is really handy, but I just didn't like the sound I was getting from it.
Vox Satchurator - Fizzy. Top endy, but with a nice vocal tone to it. Pretty much nailed Satch's tone recorded with a cellphone. :-o

Toneczar Openhaus - It sounds too 'open'. I love tight sounds better
Fender amplifiers - They sound pretty decent but every time I plug into one, I get insane (more or less, crappy) feedback. Fender amps sound thin for me also

I wouldn't name whose MIJ's I've tried. But that includes an old Epiphone, a few Grecos, I think a Burny or two IIRC. Although I've never tried old MIJ tokais. Like what's in the thread title, everybody seems to like them, and I'm sure there are gems out there, but in comparison, a few guys I get to jam with playing RJ's always seem to have good guitars. So maybe it's the MIK LP's I dig better... or maybe not. But MIJ's? I'm unlucky enough [with the MIJ gear I get to try] to think there's a lot of Jap junk out there.
Just me though! I'll be surprised if anyone has the same sentiments, in any case... flame suit on!

I've never bonded with the Timmy. I've had both V1 and V2. Pretty good cash cow when I eventually flipped them, though.
Neck-through guitars. Maybe I'm more of being apprehensive around them because I'm clumsy with my things. A hard face-plant and BAM! There goes the neck.

fender jaguars, jazzmaster and mustangs - i've always been a fan since my grade school days (90's), then i had a bandmate who owned these kind of guitars. tried them. and wasn't really impressed. the controls where a bit confusing, the squealed with feedback, made a lot of humming noises and didn't feel "balanced" in terms of weight distribution. i dont think they sound bad though.

Hi-watts seem to be one-trick ponies as well. I was on my way assembling a DR504 Preamp, which could be mated to my JCM800 (DIY) because it has a jack that goes straight to the power amp. The power amps of both amps are close, if not identical.
But I stopped somewhere when I nailed (IMHO) the HIwatt sound with a Boston OD100 pedal. Simple trick lang, squeeze the bass with a very small input capacitor. Well, among other things.

i've flipped a lot of pedals, but none of them were sought after or popular.
latest one i got was a Wampler Slostortion. i read all good reviews, but i just dont think there's anything special with it. its not bad, its just i was hoping i'd be impressed with it like the first time i had an emma reeza, a DNA Gainfxxr and an analogman MT2 ... either that or i was hoping for more treble and tight crunch out of the thing.
MXR 10 band EQ - i just think they complicate my tone.

Floyd Rose bridges - too complicated.
Almost all of Fernando guitars and basses - bad fretwork most of the time, flimsy hardware and electronics, soft woods, blocky feel.

Or pretty much any song that Josh Homme plays guitar on, mapa-Kyuss man o QoTSA.
Methinks some folks just like the percussive sound of the pick hitting the strings. I do switch preferences myself. There are times I just like the stoner-rock fuzz over the chug-chug metal stuff.
Anyway, back on topic: mine would be EMG 81/85 pickups. Back in the 80s the sound was a novelty with Metallica, et al. Nowadays, pare-pareho na ang tunog ng mga metal guitarists dahil sa pickup combo na yan. Maybe it's also because I've been enjoying warmer passive pickup tones lately.

Well, even if you hated it, I would not be surprised. :D Hiwatts are notorious for being too bright and when they're not cranked, they don't sound very good. But for classic Townshend and Gilmour tones, they really kick butt.

hehehe opinion ko lang naman yun...minsan gusto ko lang ding makinig sa mga experimental post-punk, shoegaze at no wave bands na walang sense ang guitar playing at puro noise lang or minsan ambient effects lang, out of the box ba...hahahaha....to each his own naman e (kaya nga swak ang binigay ko sa thread na ito gawa ng title)
...for the record fan din naman ako ng classic rock at clean production pero pabago-bago din trip ko depende sa mood at season

Wow. I love floating tremolo (or much more correct, vibrato) system guitars. Fixed bridge guitars are boring to me (except acoustic guitars. I can't imagine an acoustic guitar with floating bridge, LOL).

I love Floyd Rose bridges, but Ibanez Edge bridge are lovelier.
Fernando guitars are OK for beginners or for practice use. Never trust them for main axe, unless you're an artist (like Mike Elgar and Jet Pangan) with a Fernando customized guitar.

DOD YJM308 - probably because it was supposed to be for single coils... Entwistle Darkstar Pickups - magsasawa ka rin agad. You lose good clean tones, you lose good smooth overdriven tones, you lose the sensitivity of a good alnico pickup. You gain an average heavy tone.

It was meant to be that way. The mid boost is there so you won't have muddy lows and shrieking highs when using it to push tube amps. Nonetheless, I don't like it either.

No. My first electric guitar is a stratocaster fan kasi ako ni Yngwie Malmsteen dati hehe! Telecaster na naka-humbucker GAS ko ngayon. =) di ko lang trip itsura ng single coil kahit single coil humbucker pa naka-install sa guitar natturn-off ako. :)

Personally, I'm not a fan of Gibson shapes (unless it's an SG bass) and humbuckers. Single coils forevs.

i don’t have a telecaster and i’m not a big of fan of the gen. design either(hmm maybe a telemaster) - but some of the bands that i admire use them effectively like The Police, Radiohead, Death Cab for Cutie, Bloc Party...a lot of people hate teles that i’m starting to like them now (just to piss people :-D \m/) ...lol!!!

i can understand why people dont like Les Pauls, strats, BC Rich pointy shaped guitars, tube screamers, Toneczar Openhaus, etc.

Siguro bad experience lang sa tube amps hehe.
2 gigs na dumaan na nagkataong tube type yung amps tapos masyadong madumi yung tunog (para sakin).
Pati minsan kahit gusto ko clean sound lang, may natural dirt siya. Di ko gusto yun :-(
Oh well kanya-kanyang trip nga naman, nasanay lang siguro ako sa solid-state.
Q: Ang Orange amps ay solid-state noh? :) Yung tipong ganung tunog solve nako doon haha

Hindi ba yung ibang posts eh personal preference na lang ang binabanggit at hindi yung essence ng original title? Like B.C. Rich and other pointy guitars, for example. Kahit naman yata kelan eh hindi ito nagustuhan ng karamihan eh. So, hindi masasabing it's "a piece of gear that everyone seems to like, except you" :-P

For some reason, I don't like basses that aren't Fender styled. like the Warwicks and the like. Yes I've heard them played and they sound amazing. but I'd still go for the P-Bass,Jazz bass, and the Jag Bass over the 5 string warwick like basses haha
oh, and those straps with designs like bullets.. especially the police sign strap. i find it weird haha

Naiintindihan ko kung bakit yung iba ayaw ng tube amps. Una, kung may limitadong budget yung musician, malaking konsiderasyon ang gagastusin sa pagpapalit ng tubo. Yun namang iba na spartan clean tone ang hanap, ayaw ng distortion na inherent sa saturated tubes. Lalo na kung limitado lang ang nasubukan n'yang bilang nang tube amps, at ang nasubukan pa eh Marshall-based na low wattage amp. Getting a clean tone at gig-usable volume from one of those is like trying to squeeze blood from a turnip. Parang yung Reinhardt 18 ko nuon, laging distorted kahit anong level. Pero dun naman talaga nage-excel ang tube amps eh. Tapos, may paniniwala pa na napaka fragile ng tube amps. Para sa akin, lahat ng bagay na hindi pagtutuunan ng tamang kalinga eh talagang madaling masisira. You want a hardcase for your guitar, right? So why should your pedalboard and amp deserve less?

Toneczar openhaus...I really don't know why, but i really don't like it. A Les Paul guitar with a different name...I'm sorry but it still sounds like a Les Paul even with me not looking at it. Whether it be cheap or not...IT WILL ALWAYS BE A COPY!!!

Les Paul guitars. But only in terms of playability. A little bit unwieldy and hard to play for me. It's hard to reach the higher frets. Some are a bit heavy too. That's why I prefer SGs because the access is great, they sound huge as well and they are much lighter. I don't mind owning one Paul though. They sound great. They have that unique sound character. Black Beauty customs are particularly pretty.
Vox amps I just don't know what the fuzz is all about.
EMG 81/85 They just sound the same in any guitar.
Fender Jaguars and their other offset guitars It's just too popular with the hipster set nowadays

there are of tons of tube amps that can provide the sound you want. maybe the tube amps you played are of lower wattage , have bad tubes or just simply bad amps.

Feeling ko nga ganun. Bad experience lang talaga kaya medyo natakot na ako gumamit uli ng tube amp :)

Strats. Coz it just goes from very soft to soft with some attack (no matter how hard you pick the [gooey brown stuff] out of it). Teles respond better in this aspect.

agreed with the Dunlop Jazz III picks ... i cannot imagine how anyone can hold that thing or even strum chords with it, i thought that pick is for specialized genres like metal where you are hitting 4 strings max, and doing a lot of riff and lead work.
maybe i am right lol
its not like i strum chords, its just more of a "what if i have to strum chords" kinda thing.

also agreed with Wampler although to be specific, wampler slostortion ... it wasn't what i had in mind when i read "american hi-gain distortion" ... to get to medium gain you have to set it at 3 o'clock, thats like all its gain already. i hate setting gain knobs to full, it looks ugly and amateurish, hahahaha!
its not really a bad pedal... i was just disappointed with what it does ... not to mention, i find the sound unuseable whe you turn the mids past noon.

you dont really "like" Boss Pedals... as much as you "like" multi fx pedals.
you use Boss pedals cause its the best and most practical choice you have i.e. limited budget, or you are a touring musician and bringing the nice pedals gets them ef'd up.

I actually liked the CE-2 but again, I really didn't develop 'liking' for them to be part of my pedal rig.

i don't want to troll around here kasi obviously offset lover ako(kasi nga sharing insights di ba?) but i would like to disagree-i feel na mas marami ang fans at gumagamit ng mga strats/tele, les paul/sg at ibanez shred/metal guitars than fender jaguars/jazzmasters sa mga gigs. its not that "too" popular imho. hirap nga ako makakita or makahanap ng mga bandang gumagamit nito-mangilan-ilan lang... sa local scene natin - up dharma down, sandwich, mayonnaise, itchyworms. mas popular siya actually nung 60s nung uso ang surfguitar at nung 90s gawa ng shoegaze at alternative scene. kailangan kasi yung vibrato ng gitara na ito sa mga ganung tugtugan. narresurrect ngyon sa mga indie bands gawa ng mga 90s alt babies na naabutang idol ay si "gulp.." kurt cobain na mahilig sa modified mustang at jaguar...nauso siya nung late 80s/early 90s kasi mumurahin lang siya, nabibili lang sa pawnshop at platform sa modifications/experimentation(diy attitude ng mga rakista noon hanggang ngayon)...pag sinabi ring offset guitar hindi ito sa limited sa fender jaguar/jazzamster o mustang lang. makikita kasi ito sa alignment ng guitar body. eto considered na offset guitars din: firebird, firebird non-reverse, mosrite/univox hi-flier, charvel/jackson surfcaster, b.c. rich mockingbird, squier super-sonic, airline guitar, yamaha sg 3, ibanez jetking

This. Personally, I'm a huge offset fan. My first serious electric was a Mustang copy and my two current gigging guitars are Jagmaster derivatives. On Bolt Thrower's point about Jaguars/JMs (by extension) being hipstery guitars, I rarely see those around shows here. At least the ones I go to. I've seen the Itchyworms, Up Dharma Down, The Royal and Candyaudioline use them and that's about it. Oh yeah, Lochness too. Compared to the number of bands on Telecasters, Strats, Les Pauls et al, a lot of the "trendier" bands seem to use those more often than offsets. That's just what I see tho.
Personally, I'm not a big fan of Gibson shapes. The only Gibson shape I'm into is the ES but if it was a question of classy semi-hollow, I'd go Rickenbacker if I could. Never got the Les Paul, really and I only like the SG if it's a bass. There are just some things you could do with a stock Jaguar or Jazzmaster that you can't with other guitars unless they have a Vibrola or someth.
Back on topic, I'm not a fan of "metal guitars" (BC Rich, some Jackson) and I typically don't like humbuckers unless they're the really bright ones.

This. Personally, I'm a huge offset fan. My first serious electric was a Mustang copy and my two current gigging guitars are Jagmaster derivatives. On Bolt Thrower's point about Jaguars/JMs (by extension) being hipstery guitars, I rarely see those around shows here. At least the ones I go to. I've seen the Itchyworms, Up Dharma Down, The Royal and Candyaudioline use them and that's about it. Oh yeah, Lochness too. Compared to the number of bands on Telecasters, Strats, Les Pauls et al, a lot of the "trendier" bands seem to use those more often than offsets. That's just what I see tho.
Personally, I'm not a big fan of Gibson shapes. The only Gibson shape I'm into is the ES but if it was a question of classy semi-hollow, I'd go Rickenbacker if I could. Never got the Les Paul, really and I only like the SG if it's a bass. There are just some things you could do with a stock Jaguar or Jazzmaster that you can't with other guitars unless they have a Vibrola or someth.
Back on topic, I'm not a fan of "metal guitars" (BC Rich, some Jackson) and I typically don't like humbuckers unless they're the really bright ones.

Anyway, I'm not a fan of multi-effects and software like Guitar Rig or Amplitube. I was always a fan of the technical side of things and full pedalboards just feel a lot more "personal" to me. More than just creating patches and whatnot on a multieffect or a DAW. I use Guitar Rig but only for amp simulation as I do not have an adequate room recording setup as of yet. I won't record any sounds that I can't produce out of my guitar/pedals/playing. Multi-effects are convenient and you could make really good sounds with em but I want a palette I could switch up. It's not about digital/analog, it's having that kind of relationship with your board.

yes, you might not realize it, but you'd be surprised that not everyone can actually "operate" your pedal board ... some people would go and ask "why are there 3 kinds of gain pedals? isnt 1 enough?" and then you show them the sounds and how they are set up, and they go... "ahhh, ganon pala"
the only reason id go for multifx is because of budget, size and weight options ... if those are taken care of, i'd like the mothership pedal board

IDK 'bout this but my copy's high freq isn't that bad. It's just the bass. I did enjoy it for a couple hours after the purchase then I swear that piece of equipment. And for the price, I paid 300 plus tax. I just hate it. I should have bought the 20 dollar marshmallow earpiece.

Explorer-shaped guitar - just doesn't feel right for me, whether playing standing-up or sitting down
COSM technology - not quite there yet
Celestion Vintage 30 speakers - too much mid-range tone
Bakersfield tele pickups/tone - too much treble; sakit sa tenga
335-sized guitar - I love the tone, but it makes me look like a midget
Fender 57/62 pickups - great for clean sounds, but don't seem to sound good with od imho

Di lang naman Behringer guilty diyan. Crate's Blue Voodoo amps also use the same trickery. As well as a lot of ART mic preamps. The question is, if you remove the 12AX7, will the sound change? If yes, then the tube has a role to play in the circuit. If no, then you've been duped.

tube amps - way out of my budget. fragile. but will definitely take one if it's FREE. lol >:D
multieffects of any sort - haven't tried one live. i just have this feeling that it will take too much time for me to set it up on stage to make it sound the way i wanted. hehe

^ ^ i think the purpose of the LED in those tube preamps is to illuminate lang the tube. at low voltages mukang di mago-glow yung tubo nang ganun, kaya trick na lang yung LED para kunyari nailaw hehehe.

Every guitarist should like a Gibson Les Paul. If you dont like the looks, at least you should be liking how it plays and sound. It has its distinct tone IMHO.

I also didn't like PRS the way it looks and all those hype. But after I played it for a few, I understand PRS. I like the weight, the feel and the tone.
I didn't like all Fender Strats. Now I have 56 custom shop.
I don't like FRs bridges and all the yada lalala and/but now I have one.
I used to like a Boss mt2 but I don't find the tones attractive and got a better ones. -fullbore metal

I'm starting to dislike floydrose bridges. First of all tuning the darn thing sucks ass. Second, if you're careless enough, you get to lose the small parts while replacing the string. I've had my worst guitar nightmare 2 days ago with my newly bought floyded guitar. Now I need to go to the machine shop and remove the nut (if that's what you call it) kasi naputol nung hinihigpitan ko yung string. A big F.you floydrose!!

only happens with cheap floyd rose copies imho. the real thing doesn't do that. but yeah, it's a pain to tune if it's not properly set-up. in my experience, original floyd rose, takeuchi and gotoh are really easy to tune. they are stable. same as the Ibanez zero trem. I really like that one.

Eric Clapton, SRV and Hendrix? OK, not a Les Paul, but a good Les Paul can get really close to that territory.
OK, so you are one of those "modern guys" and you like bands that dont play slower than 180 bpm ... still, a good Les Paul can nail those Nile, Dream Theater, insert whatever modern band here cause i am too old to find any of those technical acts exciting.
Besides, with genres like that, it has a lot more to do with the amp than the guitar (they cover their sound with so much gain, what you have left is a guitar's response and whether its using a single coil or humbucker PUP)
now, the Les Paul isn't infallible, cause there are other things you could dislike about it:
1.) shape = its a "classic" shape 2.) neck = i prefer the strat neck too 3.) your very very unique taste in tone and music (you know, you are the type who hates stuff people like). it wont be a surprised you'd like the extreme fuzz pedals (i like them too, but i like the sound of a Les Paul as well).
same thing with good stratocasters.
I guess i am just a very mainstream guy, and every song ive liked that has a guitar in it has Les Pauls and/or Strats in it... i might also wanna sneak in a Tele.
i think some people hate them because they have not heard the good ones, or well, because of the stuff i mentioned.
funny though, i have not owned a good Les Paul ... i did own a very good Orville Firebird (it can sound like a Tele!).

i have only owned one guitar with a really good Floyd Rose, and i couldnt use its features. it was a 1996 USA Dimebag Signature i sold to a guy from France.

It is really imposible to hate these guitars: Strat and Les Paul (basic to ng Rock n' Roll e, ano ba? mapa-anung genre ka gugustuhin mo ang mga to) Everyone basically "liked" or have been inspired by these guitars in some point of their lives. Nagbago man ang taste(developed in time) pero basic to e. Esp. when you're just starting out. You look up to you "basic" guitar idols and you try to cop them :-D

A real FR is expensive. I don't remember the price though but you can get cheaper ones that are also as good like GOTOH and Schaller. :D Also, try to upgrade the block to a Brass block. It gives more sustain as I've heard.
BTW, GOTOH Floyd Rose is around Php7,300.00 in Guitar Salon (It has a brass block already).

I guess i am just a very mainstream guy, and every song ive liked that has a guitar in it has Les Pauls and/or Strats in it... i might also wanna sneak in a Tele.
i think some people hate them because they have not heard the good ones, or well, because of the stuff i mentioned.
funny though, i have not owned a good Les Paul ... i did own a very good Orville Firebird (it can sound like a Tele!).

and another +1 to the stuff about Floyd Roses ... those stuff we complain about only happen to the bad floyd roses (there are so many of them, sadly)i.e.
1.) hard to set-up 2.) gets out of tune often 3.) kills sustain
those stuff are from bad Floyd Roses. if you have a good one ... man, its amazing.
i have only owned one guitar with a really good Floyd Rose, and i couldnt use its features. it was a 1996 USA Dimebag Signature i sold to a guy from France.

sadly, a lot of us are not experienced enough to really hate the way something sounds (me included).
as for looks and playability though, we all are entitled to that

i also disagree about the srv and hendrix thing. les pauls do not quack and their neck pickup is too muddy(IMO). <_<

Not all Les Paul's neck humbucker position are muddy for I have heard and tried a few which aren't. I guess it's more pleasing to start your sentence with 'Some Les Paul's...' or 'Most Les Paul's...' though :)

OT: I admit of being a noob when it comes to floyded guitars so thanks for the enlightenment. :) I may need to buy a real Floydrose bridge and have it assembled to a luthier since wala akong katyaga tyaga kung ako mismo gagawa. Any idea how much a real Floyd bridge cost?
BTT: The tremolo effect maybe? Sounds techno of some sort... :roll:
the cheap copies can benefit from a block change or saddle change so strings can vibrate better. as for tuning stability, proper setup and good springs can do you good. tuning stability can really depend on a lot of things including your neck angle, body wood, where the spring claws are hooked, arm, headstock angle, string gauge etc etc.
the real floyd rose costs around 12k i think. try those from guitar fetish. i tried one and it's quite decent and stable.

i ddnt say that. so are free to not like a les paul. i just stated an opinion thats its hard to not like the way a good les paul sounds.

I don't like the pedal TS9 Tube Screamer. I just don't know why some like these pedal for pushing some sounds. But yeah somewhat I dislike it for I don't know why should I add it up. Somewhat enlightened by some fellow musicians. Still I ain't liking it.

I didn't know Les Pauls could sound bright, actually. At least after reading Filippo's thread sa kabila, naenlighten ako dun. I always thought Les Pauls sounded thick and chunky. Lots of the bands I like used them but I guess I'm just partial to the feel (never played a "good" LP before so yeah, biased) of Fender Jaguars and Jazzmasters (tried a '62 and a number of mexican/Japanese Jazzies/Jags). Soundwise, they just don't do it for me. Functionally, I'm a sucker for that Jazzmaster trem. Suits my needs. Looks-wise, I'd pick offset every time.
Again, I won't say anything about tone considering every guitar has good and bad apples. The older LPs (from what I hear in those compressed youtube vids and read about in articles) seem brighter sounding and a lot more "alive." If that's the case, I might like how they sound from time to time but if you give me free rein to take one guitar from a vintage guitar shop, I'd go for a '59 Jazzmaster or a '62 Jaguar.
Everyone appears to like Les Pauls. I don't hate them but I'm not too crazy about them. Not a fan, really.

mas madali i-setup kahler kaso pangit lang siya talaga tignan. buti first electric guitar ko naka floyd copy na kaya nasanay na. iba din talaga tuning stability pag na setup mo mabuti. i dont have to tune everytime.
BTT: Elixir strings- ang dulas, masyado bright tunog. iba yung feel kaya hindi ko feel. hantayin ko kalawangin yung akin tapos alisin ko na. will go back to dunlops. basic and it works. di naman malakas kalawangin dunlop.

just kidding. i dont know anything about the world of shred really. though... i do know some guitar players in real life who do not like whammy bars (but play ibanez floating bridges), but i have a nagging suspicion its because they didnt know how to use it.
they are the type of guys who save on strings so much, they never practiced yanking the bar - maybe they didn't wanna get an allen wrench and re-string in case they break a string.

totally agreed.. i personally love the whammy bar..:D though i mainly use my telecaster nowadays(due to twang). i still miss doing divebombs, flutter and the likes.

Most of the times, if the strings break in a FR system, it will break near or in the bridge, hence you can put them back again as long as you wind your string long enough.

share ko lang... when i was still working at a music store.., someone asked if I could tune her guitar.., so I did.., but before giving the guitar back., I asked the owner if I can cut those freaking strings na nakalaylay at nagbabadyang manusok.., the girl said.. "why? does it affect the tone or something?"... I answered: "Nope, not really... It just irritates me..." :lol:

If this was true, why did they discontinue the USA custom line? On the other hand, Jackson still continues with their USA line despite their Asian manufactured lines. And I can tell you now that the USA line feels different than their Asian line. Maskuha ng Jackson USA ang tamang metal/shred vibe.

Yes I played the guitar. Paul Gilbert would sound much much better on a good sounding Suhr. You have to experience an exceptional Jackson USA and an exceptional Suhr Custom to understand how far below the tone and character ranking Ibanez is.

I have tried out so many Ibanez guitars in my life ... more so than the other brands. And I have always wished that it would be an exceptional sounding guitar because I like how Ibanez looks. Fender USA -- on the American Standard Series -- has produced more exceptional sounding guitars than Ibanez in terms of percentage tried. And I don't dig the looks of the American Standard Series but the exceptional ones just sound better than any Ibanez Made in Japan.
I wish and wish that Ibanez would concentrate on sound and character instead of coming up with more hardware gimmicks and colors.

You are probably talking about just the super strat ones. I don't think this would qualify as a fair comparison as construction and set-up between the two guitars are worlds apart. These two guitars are geared towards very different styles of playing.
Don't look for a strat sound from something that isn't a strat. Do you think Steve Vai would have stuck with a strat if he didn't have an endorsement deal with Ibanez?
I've heard an original roadstar series Ibanez sound better than most of the strats I've played.

But John Scofield uses his Ibanez even on recording sessions just check out the vid I posted. I talked to John and I did ask him about that. He said the Ibanez is all that he uses, well except of course if he's looking for a strat or a tele or any other guitar type sound.

The magic is the same for any guitar to sound good. Can you really tell if Paul Gilbert would sound better? He has changed guitars over the years but you can never tell that just by listening to him play. Even Frank Gambale changed from a fender to an Ibanez to a Yamaha but you can never tell that just by listening. Eric Johnson changed from his vintage strat to his new signature strat but you can never tell the difference just by listening.

same in the case of Holdsworth he changed guitars over the years from gibson sg to ibanez roadstar to carvin and Steinberger and still sound the same.
minsan mahirap din isipin kung paano ma-retain ang signature tone mo e, is it on pedals? skills? or amp? but definitely not on guitars. IMO :-D

You are probably talking about just the super strat ones. I don't think this would qualify as a fair comparison as construction and set-up between the two guitars are worlds apart. These two guitars are geared towards very different styles of playing.
Don't look for a strat sound from something that isn't a strat. Do you think Steve Vai would have stuck with a strat if he didn't have an endorsement deal with Ibanez?
I've heard an original roadstar series Ibanez sound better than most of the strats I've played.
There are certain guitar properties that transcend construction and set up. I was not looking for a vintage or modern strat sound. In fact, when I test guitars I have learnt how to isolate those properties to determine the charcter and sould of a guitar. Steve Vai might stick with a strat loaded with humbuckers. Checkout Wayne Charvel's take on the Green Meanie available from wayneguitars.com. I have also owned signature series Japanese made Ibanez and I can tell you the standard production in the 90s is equal to J.Craft made Ibanez today if not better. Basically, the average quality of Ibanez has deteriorated over time not to mention sound.

But John Scofield uses his Ibanez even on recording sessions just check out the vid I posted. I talked to John and I did ask him about that. He said the Ibanez is all that he uses, well except of course if he's looking for a strat or a tele or any other guitar type sound.

Nice pic... and I guess we have to take John Scofield for what he said. Apparently the differences are significant enough if 99.99% of all Ibanez guitars sound bad. For Fender, I can get it every 5%. For Gibson USA, about 1%. For PRS, 1%. Suhr generally scores around 15%. A guitar either has magic or it does not unfortunately. Well, I can say that Paul Gilbert sounded better with his sound at FAT than at Araneta Coliseum but thats a host of factors at play. So, if we can never tell what changed, then it goes on to say that since all of them sound the same, I can say that the Gibson 335 is better than the Ibanez version of the 335 because its made in the USA and the Gibson guys are more experienced than the Ibanez guys at making 335s because Gibson sells more 335 style guitars than Ibanez. I agree Ibanez quality may have deteriorated over the years but I still think that the sound is still very much dependent on who's playing the instrument and that there are still some magic left for some though maybe few. The magic as we all know is inexplicable and I don't believe that the "magic" has something to do with production quality.
Bottom line is, though to us the Ibanez sound may not be the best thing (yes including me), others may find its sound more suitable to their playing than any other guitar that sounds better in our opinion. :)

Sound the same? Have you heard them play in front of you live while changing from the Gibson SG and then to the Ibanez Roadstar and then into the Steinberger? If not, how can we say its sound the same? I am not trying to insult you because I have not heard them myself go thru that live with the same rig testing their different preferences, for all we know they might really sound the same. But until its done, I cannot say at all.

Thats the whole point, it IS relevant. If it were not relevant, we would NOT be playing guitar but be playing synthesizers or singing like Willie Villarame. I believe that it if you hear it live, it IS relevant because dynamics and expression come out in LIVE performances. Now if your gear makes you sound like a CD in a live situation aka multi fx, than you have bad gear. If production quality does not contribute to sound given the 'right' raw materials, then we can ask John Scofield to then downgrade to the artcore series right? Not to knock off John, but I believe there are more professional guitarists and artists playing a Gibson 335 than an Ibanez 335 right?

Wrong... Most professional guitar players can't afford a real Gibson 335. Most of them use the alternatives. Collectors have the real ones haha! How do you explain supposedly cheap and crappy guitars that sound better than the real deal? I've tried a Fernando strat that sounded better than the Fender strat plus it was sitting next to. The magic factor is just that... It's magic!
Even in a live situation, the difference between the guitars may be too little for the audience to notice given a blind fold test. I've watched Scott Henderson use different guitars in different shows but he sounded like himself to me every time.
Sure some guitars are better than others but that doesn't mean that they all sound dead right?

Personally, I've avoided pursuing Ibanez guitars because I always end up having an exhausting and underwhelming experience testing so many guitars and not finding one that sounds great. I believe there are still some good sounding Ibanez guitars out there but I simply don't have the time to test hundreds of guitars just to find that diamond in the rough (and usually it's not in the finish that I like). I still wanted to buy an Ibanez about two years ago (I really wanted a 20th Anniversary RG550 or any other RG Prestige guitar) but after going to 4-5 different Guitar Center branches in different US states (in a span of a couple of weeks) and trying out ALL of their stocks (seriously... kapal mukha Noypi mode talaga ako nun), wala talaga e. Sobrang sayang sa time and effort at ang mahal pa ng gas sa US at that time. I think nasa $4.10 to a gallon. One visit to Tone Merchants was all it took for me to find several awesome Strats and Superstrats (Vigier, Don Grosh, Suhr, K-Line, etc.). Too bad I already splurged on a buttload of pedals back then kaya nawala yung budget ko for a guitar. Hahaha!
Medyo malayo talaga in terms of percentage, objectively speaking. A killer Suhr Pro Series Modern (~$2,200) or plain-top Custom Modern (~$2,500) is so much easier to find than a killer Ibanez RG, Vai or whatever (~$1,600-$2,500). Considering the prices, parang di na worth it mag-effort pa maghanap ng Ibanez e. Like Alex, I wish Ibanez can improve on its quality control. Kaya naman yun but I think it'll take years for them to achieve that. I believe Gibson has improved its QC as of late but allegedly, they're still sending their best guitars to Japan.

Alex, just in case you didn't know, no country other than Japan can sell J. CUSTOM Ibanez guitars. Team J-Craft and Prestige models are NOT J. Custom models. But then, I would agree to some extent that some Prestige guitars are dead and in some cases, you can get an Indonesian-made Ibanez and get almost the same quality as with the Prestige models, if selected properly. But IMO, J. Customs are up there...

Ask them if they ditched their Gibsons -- in short tanungin mo if they still have Gibsons at home -- for Ibanez. I serisouly doubt that. Besides, if they get paid a lot for edorsements, they can preteNd NOT to sacrifice tone. Just my two cents.

That could be true. If you are referring to a street guitar players and a broke a** band players.
But if you are a professional, that's a different story.
I am a pro but still can't afford a real 335! I wouldn't be able to justify the cost. I can afford a suhr or any strat based guitar though I mean if I really wanted one.
Because Strat types can be used for almost any kind of music, it will practically pay for itself. :)

I can't argue about PRS but to me Suhr guitars along with LSL guitars and Don Grosh are worth their asking price. It all depends where you buy them. Some dealers charge close to the MSRP while I get mine close to invoice. Quality, soundwise and customer service I think they're the best bang for buck instruments out there.

Peavey Vypyr amps- I don't like the looks, they look like amps with christmas lights lol
Metal Picks- Too durable that it can break strings often.
Mariposa Strings- lack crisp.
SS amps with built in effects- I don't like the idea, I just want it simple.

purchasing aged plastic parts.. i can understand why peeps want to relic there stuff but aged parts(pick guard etc.) i can age the golden years spec parts myself(and it's easier to age them compared to the finish imo, lol). unless, i get em free through a custom build or something..:D

fulltone dirt pedals, mesa amps, gibson sg's, boss phasers and flangers and any visual sound pedal. i have products from them like the ocd, i have an sg but yeah, you can never find me using them on my board. i got them from my dad's collection. but yeah never liked them that much to use them regularly.

Laney LX series amps, i'm not if everybody likes them though. :lol: Tried one sa studio before, cleans sounded awful(IMO) and controls were a bit hard to, well, control. :lol: My pathfinder would've done a better job.

Found the cleans on those amps too be a tad bright,so it could be harsh on some setups. Gain channel is over the top,yeah you can get tight rhythm but also it doesn't respond that well to playing nuances,and can get fizzy with a stingy attack if you're not careful. Does what it's intended to do IMO,for most other things I think the LG series is more representative of their solid-state capabilities,and the LX was added on for certain genre players.

Personally, I'm not a fan of Gibson shapes (unless it's an SG bass) and humbuckers. Single coils forevs.

Pareho tayo bro, annoying sa akin ung untidy ang pagkaka-wind ng strings sa headstock. Attitude daw, yes I agree but those loose strings are actually dangerous and destructive. All of my Ibanez RG's are string-winded meticulously by me. A cutter is always handy because I have it all the time inside my gigbag.

Ibanez guitars, I've never tried one that made me want to buy it--kahit yung mga nasa 20k range na. Buti pa ibang cheap/er guitars, napapa-isip ako. Just sounded dead to me, walang character.

MXR Phase 90 - I prefer the Phase 100 over it but in general I really don't dislike it, medyo mas trip ko lang talaga yung 100. Gusto ko kasi nacocontrol ko yung "form" nung sound although marami nagsasabi na 90 is better, but for me, nasa guitar player na kung pano mo mapapatunog ng maganda yun. :)

Tremolo systems. Nothing against it and a lot of my favorite players (Hammett, Hanneman/King, Dimebag, etc.) use it and I love listening to divebombs and all but I just don't want the added responsibility of having a guitar with a whammy bar. Besides, I personally find it more 'impressive' whenever I see a shredder ripping out a solo using a fixed bridge guitar.
Also, any guitar with all them fancy finishes, flamed maple tops and all those very 'colorful' aesthetics. A guitar with a plain black finish is much more beautiful to me.

Ouch.. but i must admit there are some parameters that I also find lacking with their sound. I must agree with the modulations pedals being okay and the delay pedals as a start-up pedal. But the dirt pedals seem to leave me wanting. I use mine as a secondary, sometimes as a front end driver if the amp is nice. :-)

I'd say that about their drive pedals.. Have yet to find something that has wowed me. The delays/modulation can be really nice though (selected models).

black strat with white pick guard. rosewood/ebony fretboard on strat and tele. fuzz. mesa tri-rect. i like the mark v though. looks of a JG. the tone though is just wow! suhr modern. i like the other suhr models though.

Dont flame on me. Lol. Boss pedals. The only boss pedalnon my board is my Boss DD6 and the only reason it's there is because my gf gave it to me as a gift. I outgrew and started to dislike their products because of philmusic. Lol. They actually sound and perform bland for my taste. Ung mga distortion na nadinig ko laging ngongo. Tsaka those behringers and bostons, kuhang kuha na nila ung signature sound ng boss. Oh and one thing, napakaboring ng graphics ng boss. Unlike these botique awesome pedals that makes me work hard to buy them. Lol

my own opinion ONLY: POD XTl, X3L, HD300... never liked them, maporma lang itsura.. ended up trading or selling them... Ewan ko ba pero for me kahit ano gawin ko I end up witht he same sound hehehe!

Ibanez Gio a.k.a. GRG Series Yes Ibanez is good and all but I never really liked their entry models the feel is a bit different compared to RGs and mid Level S Series but thats just me.
VOX Pathfinder I often play heavy music so I usually roam around heavy gain. The Patfinder didnt quite satisfy my taste though. But on VOX I'd love to own a Valvetronix modelling amp

in my experience naman (same with Rmansh)... parang alambre yung feel. im used to using D Addario's and love the tome i'm getting, very responsive, at clear.
If you always use high gain, i think ok ang Elixir, as it is warm sounding. nothing against it pero talagang malayo sa D'addario which is cheaper, short life, but better sound quality.

I really noticed sa sg ko na right after I changed to elixirs (from stock gibson) , parang naging flat yung tone nya, hindi na tuloy ganun ka inspiring tugtugin. Kaya I was having second thoughts replacing the stock gibson strings of my new LP kasi baka hindi ko na din sya ma enjoy tugtugin. Now the comments here confirmed my observation. I'm now going back to d addarios!

How does it compare to, say, old some Fender & Marshall amps? Since, those two mentioned amps are more common here in Manila. ...baka pwede masubukan namin minsan, kung nasa inyo pa yung mga Dumbles nyo, mga sir?
First hand inputs such as yours, aside from "FM55's", would be very helpful for us. Since, our country itself is heavily deprived with the best sounding (boutique) gears. In fact, most of the so-called boutique gear in our country are only over-hyped units that are pimped heavily over the net & particularly here in our forum for the purpose of product movement by locally practicing retailers & 'gray-marketeers' of sort, actually.

elixir electric strings feel a little weird. the acoustic elixirs are ok.
i also find it hard to like humbuckers or p90s. i like low-output buckers in semi-hollow guitars, though. but generally, i really only like to play single coils.

The Omar Rodriguez-Lopez offsets looked really cool though.
They do AND they're in 24" but I didn't really like how the rest of the Jet King line felt. Dealbreaker sakin yung single pickup format though. The new Ibanez Roadcore line feels nice. Haven't tried them plugged in though. Sana the pickups are better. The model hearkens back to my favorite era for Ibanez. I honestly wish they stuck to the Ric-inspired originals lang din. Man, that original Roadstar was great.

Yeah, the scale length had vintage jag all over it. I've watched somewhere that ORL used .13's tuned in standard so he could punish the guitar while still staying in tune. He's one of the few guitar players out there with that single pick-up format on their signature guitar, which puts him in the ranks of Frederik Thordendal and vintage Eddie Van Halen LOL. I kid. The Roadcore looks nice, somehow the aesthetics remind me of a tamed version of a Schecter Ultracure.

I have nothing against your question earlier or any sort of aggression. In fact, it was an honest inquiry of what i thought i need to learn from you guys who, to my understanding of your remarks, had already experienced trying Dumble amps.
There's a saying, "you can not give what you do not have". Joey Puyat, despite owning several hundreds of thousands Pesos worth of home audio equipment, even told Arie Hipolito, "hindi mo malalaman ang totoong tunog ni Derek Trucks hangga't hindi mo pa siya mapapanood ng live". ...the reason why i asked about your reviews with the said amp is because, *again* to my understanding, you yourself had already tried Dumble amps based on what you said earlier (http://talk.philmusic.com/index.php?topic=251610.msg3958539#msg3958539). Now, it is already a given that Dumble amps are ridiculously overpriced boutique gear. But, to regard of it as 'crap' is something that should be based on first hand experiences by yourself. So, having said that & since you yourself said that you never/"don't have to" own one, i think it's just unfair to label such piece of gear as 'crap' if the only basis of your remark was the price tag. That's just plain nasty.

So, if you take things at face value and not its actual live sound & feel, does it make you nothing more or nothing less credible? I do agree with you that there are expensive things (quite a number) out there that are NOT worth it, but there are ALSO expensive things that really are worth it and sound GREAT. But I only make that call after trying it out...
That being said, I also make gear purchases that I don't get to try or even see for that matter because I rely on some experts to make the choice for me. Case in point, though I got to see my Gil Yaron being made, at every important step wherein Gil Yaron had to assess the character and sound of the guitar, I totally did not get to hear it. But it still turns out to be one of the best sounding Les Paul replicas ever and it was worth the price tag.

So, if you take things at face value and not its actual live sound & feel, does it make you nothing more or nothing less credible?
By face value, I meant the essence of my first statement. It was a simple declaration, but apparently some people arrived at a fast conclusion that I owned/played the said amp. And I've never claimed to be an expert in terms of gear, I was merely giving an honest opinion based from the available samples I was able to analyze. Granted the proper resources, it's common sense that trying out stuff itself would be the best approach to properly appraise an item (especially if you have an intention to buy it) and I completely agree with you on that one. It might even shed positive light on my opinion. It definitely would be fun. But as I have said earlier, I can't really apply that to certain boutique stuff like the Dumble that I have no access to - again, this isn't a case of sour-graping. Curiosity led me to seek out how those stuff sounded like, so I went for the next best and accessible method (for me) and I was able to reach a personal vindication for my claim. Listening to samples as objectively as I could, it didn't really impress me and the price tag offended me. Which is why I don't like it... and the next thing I knew, I was in this thread.
Again, I neither present nor strive for expert gear credibility. I cannot stress this enough. I'm just a guy speaking out his mind.

Very sound approach that I can understand. Just a tip, though soundclips are not conclusive. Not even a basis to write something off though. Amps can do more than one setting for a clip. Way much more unlike guitars which more or less have one setting unless you have a responsive volume control on the guitar.

I am aware about your sarcasm - I've acknowledged that when I first replied to you. I felt your initial reply (which hinted aggression on my part) was quite uncalled for since I was just voicing out an opinion.
You have your standards and I have my own, it just so happens that I've come up to the conclusion that I don't need to play with a Dumble for me to proclaim that I dislike it - I've already given a myriad of my own reasons, not secondhand arguments stolen from youtube comments or other forums as you were trying to imply earlier, for clarity and validation of my claims.
Yes, you might find that unreasonable, but it is my personal belief that there are many factors out there aside from trying it out yourself that can determine whether a piece of gear is likable or not. A lot of people might not agree with me on this one, but I make do with this. However, I respect your decision to be as objective as possible by obtaining first-hand experience before passing judgement to an instrument. Just understand that not everyone out there are hardcore tone-hounds to go that far to judge legendary boutique items that are inaccessible through conventional means. IMHO, the internet provides a compromise.
That said, I found the Youtube video quite amusing, though. It seems like I've violated every rule they threw around LOL.
Before I forget, I'd like to extend my apologies to firemodel55. This is one of the cases where I agree to everything he had just said.
I end my ramblings and further participation on the discussion regarding this matter with this. Take in to context what you like.

Stomp box and tube amps. I hate cables, unwanted noise, heavy lifting, high maintenance. Di pa ako makapaggitra sa bahay kase maingay. (Although I still have my TS9 clone and delay, and still dreaming of owning a dumble amp clone.)
I have been using multifx (specifically Digitech stuff) for years. Mas magaan sa muscles, tenga at bulsa. Ganon pa rin naman ang tunog at pagiging walang kwentang gitarista ko.

Goldtop Les Pauls. I've nothing against them, it's just that I cannot connect with them no matter what I do. Ibanez guitars - I owned a couple in the past, but there's something with traditional type guitars that attract me more.

Ibanez Guitars. They're really good, from entry-level to their high end ones, but I just don't like them personally. :-(
Stompboxes (pedaltrains). Almost every song I play has its own memory bank in my Multifx and I can't imagine configuring stompboxes in the middle of song breaks for those songs. Yes, digitally modeled tones suck, and I don't want to open a debate. <_<

Relic'd guitars. I don't understand the point of buying a spankin brand-new but war-torn-looking guitars from the shop (which were made that way in the first place). Even worse, get a spankin shiny brand new guitar, then replace all the stock parts with yellowed- out cream pup rings, bell knobs, bent tuning machines, rusty string trees and saddles; then bombarding the body with hammers, forks, sandpaper, paint thinner, wood stain, meat tenderizers.. I just really don't get it. If you want it looking old, get an actually old guitar. If you want to buy new, then let the battle scars come to the guitar - at least you can tell the story for each scar.

i agree and also mentioning the old pickup rings 'added' some tone lol
i actually like old hardware but if i could explain i like it when chrome is kinda darker looking as if the shiny chrome has darken abit, not on my frets though, i like em shiny

I just dont like them. Although my first guitar was a Fender Strat (MIA) and second was Gibson LP Studio. I ended up liking most guitars made by Ibanez, Jackson, ESP and PRS.

Agree ako dito. The whole mechanism, parang ang hassle :-( Then again, I don't play stuff that need Floyd Rose bridges, so I'm happy sticking to hardtails :-D

somehow i agree, it depends on the amp. As a gigging musician, sometimes you can't rely on the amps ng events kasi minsan pangit :-( that's why bringing your own distortion and overdrive is needed para makuha mo yung tone na gusto mo if sablay yung amp.

Don't know if I posted before but listed few gears that didn't work for me.
1. Fender Stratocaster. Loved the single coil sound but I can never make it sound good whenever I'm playing, hated the magnet pull as well. Sticking to humbuckers from now on. 2. Pedals in general. Bought a few pedals before and realized I don't use them as much as I wanted. What was I thinking? 3. Tremolo equipped guitars. I don't use the trem effectively in a sense that it will add at least a bit of good character or dynamics to my playing.

Strats and Les Pauls
Or any guitars that has a fixed/tune-O-Matic bridges (Including Ibanez' FAT 10 bridges!)
I know Floyds are a pain in the butt generally, but it's still worth it IMO considering na mas flexible ang magiging tunog mo dito and even if you don't use it, it's nice to have options

My first electric guitar was a Fernando strat and I had the same thought after playing it for a month a learning more things about electric guitars, never thought I'd be getting myself 2 strats 10 years down the line. Strats are my favorite guitar

I'm fed up with all his spamming to be frank. Sayang walang policy si Philmusic like TGP that requires folks to disclose their associations with manufacturers or dealers. Broduo would have been kicked out of TGP with his shenanigans here.
E wala, GC mods are absent na here for the most part and ayaw naman magbigay ng mod privileges to those who are actually willing to keep this place clean and alive.

I think he is. I've always suspected that when he started answering questions around SRP in pesos. Something's really sketchy with that guy.
